READ The Senate Torture Report... Unbelievable

Well, well, well, folks.

The Senate Intelligence Committee released a 500-page summary report on the CIA’s post-9/11 torture program. Y'all, this is some scary stuff.

HuffPo reports:

The newly released document tears apart the CIA's past claims that only a small number of detainees were subjected to the harsh interrogation techniques. The agency has said it held fewer than 100 detainees and subjected fewer than one-third of those to controversial tactics such as waterboarding. But Senate investigators found that the CIA had actually kept 119 detainees in custody, 26 of whom were illegally held. And despite CIA insistence that the program was limited in scope, Senate investigators conclude that the use of torture was much more widespread than previously thought.

The study reveals several gruesome instances of torture by mid-level CIA officers who participated in the program, including threats of sexual violence using a broomstick and the use of "rectal hydration" in instances of harsh interrogations that lasted for days or weeks on end. And, contrary to the agency's prior insistence that only three detainees were subject to waterboarding, the Senate report suggests it was likely used on more detainees.

The report cites the presence of materials typically used for waterboarding being present at certain "blacksites," or secret prisons, where the agency had previously said waterboarding was not used.

2004's President Bush's campaign manager Ken Mehlman comes out

After he helped lead the most anti-gay campaign for Bush and went against gay marriage; 2004's President Bush's campaign manager Ken Mehlman comes out of closet.

Yes, he did. Here is his reason:
"It's taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life," said Mehlman, now an executive vice-president with the New York City-based private equity firm, KKR. "Everybody has their own path to travel, their own journey, and for me, over the past few months, I've told my family, friends, former colleagues, and current colleagues, and they've been wonderful and supportive. The process has been something that's made me a happier and better person. It's something I wish I had done years ago."
Yeah, I wish you have done it when you were working for Bush. But anywho, here's more:
Privately, in off-the-record conversations with this reporter over the years, Mehlman voiced support for civil unions and told of how, in private discussions with senior Republican officials, he beat back efforts to attack same-sex marriage. He insisted, too, that President Bush "was no homophobe." He often wondered why gay voters never formed common cause with Republican opponents of Islamic jihad, which he called "the greatest anti-gay force in the world right now."

Mehlman's leadership positions in the GOP came at a time when the party was stepping up its anti-gay activities -- such as the distribution in West Virginia in 2006 of literature linking homosexuality to atheism, or the less-than-subtle, coded language in the party's platform ("Attempts to redefine marriage in a single state or city could have serious consequences throughout the country..."). Mehlman said at the time that he could not, as an individual Republican, go against the party consensus. He was aware that Karl Rove, President Bush's chief strategic adviser, had been working with Republicans to make sure that anti-gay initiatives and referenda would appear on November ballots in 2004 and 2006 to help Republicans.
Mehlman acknowledges that if he had publicly declared his sexuality sooner, he might have played a role in keeping the party from pushing an anti-gay agenda.

"It's a legitimate question and one I understand," Mehlman said. "I can't change the fact that I wasn't in this place personally when I was in politics, and I genuinely regret that. It was very hard, personally." He asks of those who doubt his sincerity: "If they can't offer support, at least offer understanding."

"What I do regret, and think a lot about, is that one of the things I talked a lot about in politics was how I tried to expand the party into neighborhoods where the message wasn't always heard. I didn't do this in the gay community at all."

Okay, well we will see if his coming out will change his ways.

Interesting Quote: Laura Bush

"Before the election season had unfolded, I had talked to George about not making gay marriage a significant issue. We have, I reminded him, a number of close friends who are gay or whose children are gay. But at that moment I could never have imagined what path this issue would take and where it would lead.”

Worst. President. Ever.

Well, on his way out, the reality has set in. Bush is the worst President ever. 76% disapprove of Bush and that is more than Nixon and Truman.

When you think about it, he deserves it. All of the foolishness we endured during his "leadership" is hard to believe. But when you use dirty tactics and lies to win, what do you really expect.

Bush has left a horrible legacy. He will never be able to live his down. Sad, though, but again deserving.

8 Years

What we are seeing is a breakdown of our country. The financial side of things are hanging on webs. We are still at war. People are losing jobs. The middle class is almost wiped out. Y'all know how we got here, Bush. His poor leadership, his arrogance, his irresponsibility, his deals with corporations and the support of the ultimate boys' club, and the abuse of power. This is what happens when people are not thinking clearly about the candidates.

This is what happens when people vote on issues that don't matter to the real world. And this what happens when folks put religion in their voting process, all you get is more plate of mess. Bush has proven that ignorance can not be an option, that we can't have a "person like me" mentality, that religion is an easy card to play against others.

I hope folks see what's happened for the last 8 years and see how his foolishness cost us freedom, our livelihood, and to some folks, their choices. We are not better off than we were 8 years ago, and if we are not careful, we will be close to a third world country

Finally

President (Mess) Bush announced a troop deployment will happen by February. About 8000 troops can come home and there will be no replacements!

"Over the next several months, we will bring home about 3,400 combat support forces -- including aviation personnel, explosive ordnance teams, combat and construction engineers, military police and logistical support forces," he said. "By November, we will bring home a Marine battalion that is now serving in Anbar province. And in February of 2009, another Army combat brigade will come home.

"This amounts to about 8,000 additional American troops returning home without replacement. And if the progress in Iraq continues to hold, Gen. Petraeus and our military leaders believe additional reductions will be possible in the first half of 2009."

I think he's getting the idea now with 60 days left of his foolishness.

Evangelicals are doing it for themselves

I learned today that evangelicals are maybe, possibly coming around. According to a September 2007 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, 15 percent of white evangelicals between 18 and 29, a group traditionally lovers of the GOP, are saying they no longer identify with the Republican Party. Some of them are jumping ship....actually to Obama's boat.

They are getting to the heart of their beliefs like: social justice, peace, and, global change. Why, you may ask? Well, a lot of younger evangelicals are traveling to other countries, questioning authority, and challenging their beliefs. After the Bush's foolishness and trickery towards them, many evangelicals are starting to wake up. I always gaffed at the methods Rove used to get evangelicals and how easy they were fooled into voting for Bush. I always hoped that the next time, they would get back to basics. And now, maybe they are.

I believe if evangelicals truly read the Bible, they wouldn't jumped behind Bush the way they did. They should have held him accountable for the lies he told and the war he led us into. They should have demanded why the rich got richer and the poor suffered more. I would like to think that the Bible provided a guideline to hold politicians accountable. I mean, it was the politicians that went after Jesus. Plus, he wasn't a fan of the government and their methods. So if you follow what Jesus did, wouldn't you follow him on his belief about government?

The new group of evangelicals are actually taking back their faith. I always felt the Bush administration hijacked Christianity. But now they want more, in fact they are seeing the mess that was made. Hopefully, they will think about the past and then, think about the past. And then ask themselves, WWJD.
