New Colored Pages From UNCANNY AVENGERS #1

Exciting!

Condoleezza Rice was actually Vetted for VP?

I just read that Condoleezza Rice was vetted for Romney's VP, but as we all know, she wasn't chosen. It's a little surprising considering the respect and power she still has.

But a few reasons has popped up on why she was passed up. RadarOnline has the scoop:
"Condi was fully vetted to become Mitt Romney's running mate and turned over financial records, including tax returns," a source close to Rice tells Radar.

"Mitt thought she would add much needed foreign policy experience to the ticket, thinks she is incredibly bright and he knew she would help with the all important female vote and African American support.

"However, Mitt's advisers talked him out of it because Condi is pro-choice and she isn't willing to change her position on the controversial issue. Condi also supports same sex civil unions which again, put her at odds with Romney. Mitt had a hard time getting the ultra conservative support of the GOP and was told if he picked Condi that would immediately be lost and so he ultimately picked Congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate."
I think he missed a great opportunity, but oh well.

Transgender Activist Janet Mock will give Keynote Speech at LGBTQ Youth Conference

Transgender activist Janet Mock will give the keynote speech at the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition's 2012 LGBTQ Youth Empowerment Conference.

Janet will be touching on her own personal battles, while encouraging the youth to live authentic and true lives.

Janet said:
"I know that it's so much more than me, so much more than my story, so much more than trying to gain recognition for my journey. It's about kids just like me, kids who are still fighting the good fight every day to just be who they are, no matter how different they may seem from their peers. They are the real heroes, and these courageous kids deserve a shining example who can help lighten their load by merely existing and being an inspiration."
The conference will take place in October 20th on campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo topped the RNC convention in ratings

Alana Thompson, Honey Boo Boo Child

One of the worst reality shows, beat one of the worst reality shows.
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo topped the RNC convention in ratings.

E! News has the scoop
TLC's spinoff starring Toddlers and Tiaras' Alana Thompson and her family, hit a series-high yet again with almost 3 million viewers, effectively topping cable news and broadcast network coverage of the Republican National Convention.

Even though it's in its fourth week, Honey Boo Boo's ratings continue to rise, growing 30 percent from last week's 2.3 million viewers. How else did the self-proclaimed redneck family beat the coverage of the RNC? In the 18-49 demo, of course! With a 1.3 rating, the only competition Honey Boo Boo had in the time period was the Fox News' 1.2 rating.

Check Out GLAAD's Sixth Annual Network Responsibility Index

Every year, GLAAD releases a Network Responsibility Index noting the quantity, quality and diversity of LGBT people on television.

This year, more LGBT images and stories were seen on the tube. We saw 69% of LGBT impressions on TV made by gay men and 66% of LGBT-inclusive broadcast hours which projected the lack of diversity within our community. That number is a wake up call on how we need more cultural and ethnic diversity on TV.

Anywho, here are the TV breakdowns:
Broadcast Networks:
  • The CW remains the top broadcast network with a rating of "Good" and 29% of its primetime programming hours being LGBT-inclusive. The CW also registered the most racial diversity with 62% of impressions made by LGBT people/characters of color.
  • ABC improved enough (+4%) and Fox declined enough (-5%) for the two to swap places for second and third place in percentage of inclusive hours compared to last year.
  • NBC remained in fourth place despite an increase of 4% in LGBT inclusive hours.
  • For the fourth year in a row CBS remained in last place with 8% LGBT-inclusive hours of primetime programming, dropping 2 percentage points from last year. After receiving an “Adequate” score last year, the network is back to a “Failing” score.

Cable Networks:
  • Showtime (46%), ABC Family (34%), TNT (34%), and HBO (33%) all received “Good” ratings for the quantity and quality of their LGBT-inclusive original programming.
  • MTV (23%) which received an “Excellent” score two years ago received an “Adequate” score this year along with FX (34%), TLC (20%) and USA (17%).
  • For the fourth year in a row TBS (5%) received a “Failing” rating, as did the History network (3%).

Black CNN Camerawoman speaks out about the Racial Incident at the RNC Convention

Patricia Carroll is the CNN camerawoman who was assaulted with peanuts and called an animal by two folks at the RNC Convention. She has decided to speak out about the incident, but she doesn't want to make this a political issue.
Carroll, who agreed to be named for the first time, said she does not want her situation to be used for political advantage. "This situation could happen to me at the Democratic convention or standing on the street corner. Racism is a global issue," she said by telephone from Tampa.

Carroll said no one took the names of the attendees who threw peanuts at her Tuesday on the convention floor and told her, "This is what we feed animals." She alerted fellow camera operators, producers and CNN security. The head of the delegation — she was not certain of the state — told her the perpetrators must have been alternates, not delegates.

But Carroll, 34, said that as an Alabama native, she was not surprised. "This is Florida, and I'm from the Deep South," she said. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."
She has said that CNN has been 100% supportive and the convention spokesman Kyle Downey was ashamed of this incident.

New Study: The Phrase 'That's So Gay' Hurts

In a new study on college students, the phrase “that’s so gay” proved to be hostile and harmful.

Researchers learned this info through a survey among 114 gay, lesbian and bisexual students between the ages of 18 to 25. They reprted their reactions to the phrase for over a year.

Here's more
Data suggests gay, lesbian and bisexual college students who heard “that’s so gay” more frequently were more likely to report feeling isolated and to suffer negative health symptoms, such as headaches, poor appetite or eating problems.

Practically every respondent reported hearing “that’s so gay” on campus at least once in the past 12 months. Nearly half of the students said they’ve heard the phrase more than 10 times within the year. Only 14 respondents—or 13 percent—hadn’t heard it at all.

Hearing the phrase more often was found to increase students’ risk of health problems and feelings of isolation.
Wow, the effects of that phrase alone can do this? We really have some work to do.

100 Minutes of the RNC Convention: Day Two

The Media on Paul Ryan's Acceptance Speech

From HuffPo:
"I marked seven or eight points I'm sure the fact checkers will have some opportunities to dispute if they want to go forward," Blitzer said. "I'm sure they will." He did not specify what the points were.

After a correspondent's interview with Ryan's family — and a fair amount of criticism — Blitzer noted that he had been getting emails from Democrats and others about what, in his words, "they claim were falsehoods, misleading statements, lies, if you will, that were made by Paul Ryan. And I guess that fact-checking is only beginning."

John King then made the point about the GM plant, and Gloria Borger brought up the debt commission issue.

Panelist David Gergen took a different tack.
"I think these factual checks are really important," Gergen said. "But this was a speech about big ideas."

The Washington Post flatly said, "Ryan misleads on GM plant closing."

This is not to say that Ryan got overwhelmingly negative reviews. CNN's Candy Crowley said he brought a "spark" to the convention hall. "This was the speech they were waiting for," she added. Burnett called the speech "precise, clear and passionate."

The Truth

Interesting Quote: Sarah Palin

Chris Wallace on Chris Christie's RNC Speech - It was Off-Key

Fox News host Chris Wallace wasn't feeling Chris Christie's I want to be President speech last night.

HuffPo reports:

"I have to say, personally, I thought it was one of the most off-key keynote speeches I ever heard," Wallace said.

He noted that Christie said the word "I" 37 times, "Romney" seven times, and "jobs" one time.

"[I]t seemed sometimes as if he was promoting his own candidacy more than he was Mitt Romney's," Wallce added. "People liked the speech, but not nearly the kind of intense reaction to it and intense listening to it that there was for Ann Romney."
You know, Wallace is right.

Mess! RNC attendee allegedly Threw Nuts at a Black CNN Camerawoman and said ‘This Is How We Feed Animals’

You knew foolishness was just around the corner at RNC convention. According to several sources, a RNC attendee allegedly threw nuts at a black camerawoman working for CNN and said to her, “This is how we feed animals".

This fool was thrown out of the convention.

TPM has more of the info, kind of:
The CNN official declined to confirm specific details of the incident to TPM but generally confirmed an account posted on Twitter by former MSNBC and Current anchor David Shuster: “GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying ‘This is how we feed animals.’”

It is not clear whether the alleged culprit was a delegate or attending the convention in some other capacity.

In a written statement, CNN addressed the matter but divulged few details: “CNN can confirm there was an incident directed at an employee inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum earlier this afternoon. CNN worked with convention officials to address this matter and will have no further comment.”
That camerawoman should have threw that camera at that guy... I would've.

Gay Couple Sues United/Continental Airlines for Taping their Dildo on their Bag

Last year, a couple had a horrible experience at the airport. Supposedly the airport staff took the couple's dildo from their luggage, put lube all over it and taped it on top of one of their bags. Then, they put that particular piece of luggage on the baggage carousel... Mess.

Now the couple is suing the United/Continental Airlines. Here's more:
Christopher Bridgeman and Martin Borger, are reportedly seeking punitive damages.

"Plaintiffs' bags were sent to the baggage carousel where plaintiffs discovered, to their horror, that a private sex toy had been removed from one of their bags, covered in a greasy foul-smelling substance and taped prominently to the top of their bag," the lawsuit states, according to Courthouse News. "Plaintiffs experienced extreme shock and horror when they observed the above-described bag and when observing the surprised and/or laughing faces of numerous onlookers in the baggage claim area."

The court document goes on to note, "Plaintiffs were experiencing such a high degree of shock and embarrassment that they felt compelled to call two friends to come to the airport to assist them."
I hope they find out who's responsible for this. It's just unbelievable.

Gov. Jan Brewer: Obama Is 'Race-Baiting,' Pandering To Latinos

Gov. Jan Brewer is a lava hot mess. This... I can't even think of a name, had the nerve to say that President Barack Obama is race-baiting by pandering to Latinos.

She said
“It’s all the time, the race-baiting; it’s all the time, you know, that we’re bigots," Brewer told Politico on its live broadcast from the Republican National Convention.
When asked whether that meant Obama is "race-baiting," she responded, "I do, I absolutely do. There's no doubt in my mind...he panders to them," referring to Latino voters.
She is such a piece of work.

New York Times focuses on the Bear Culture

Photographer Alan Charlesworth captured interesting pics about my fellow cousins, the bears.

Here is some of the article:
“It’s not perfect body, gym-toned, and no facial hair,” said Mr. Charlesworth, who recently completed a Master’s of Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design. “That’s what society deems as being a normal, stereotypical gay male. That’s not what I identify with.”

Mr. Charlesworth, 30, definitely doesn’t look like that ubiquitous image of the stereotypical gay man, but he’s not large or hairy, either. For him, identifying as a bear is more about taking pride in his attraction to men with bodies that look as though they were formed by years of chopping trees, and not by years of running on treadmills and drinking protein smoothies.

But Mr. Charlesworth said his lack of heft made it hard to immediately identify with a group predominantly made up of large men. He said, for all their disdain for superficial gay culture, Bears can be obsessively body-focused, too, just on bigger bodies. So he used photography as a way in.
Check out the pics and article here.

Trial Judge orders Proposition 8 case closed

District Judge James Ware

This is good!

SDGLN reports:
The trial judge in California’s Proposition 8 lawsuit ordered the case closed today.

This stunning new twist to the case will further complicate matters, since proponents of Proposition 8 have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review the decision of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the lower court ruling that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional.

The order issued today by District Judge James Ware could mean that gay and lesbian couples in California could once again get married. But even that in uncertain, because Prop 8 proponents are likely to seek a stay of that order.

Hot Mess Alert: Anti-Gay Activist and Prop 8 Donor Charged with Sexually Abusing Young Boys

My buddy, Will from Back2Stonewall found some drama for everybody's mama. This anti-gay activist fool, Caleb Douglas Hesse, was caught sexual assaulting young boys. But that's not all:
A longtime anti-gay activist, California Prop 8 donor, and elementary school teacher was taken into custody on August 17th after admitting inappropriate contact with young boys.
Caleb Douglas Hesse, a teacher for the Morongo Unified School District since 1987 (most recently, he was teaching first grade at Friendly Hills Elementary School in Joshua Tree) and a longtime youth volunteer with the virulently homophobic Evangelical Free Church of Yucca Valley, has confessed to sexually abusing “numerous underage boys,” with authorities believe the crimes occurred between the early 1980’s and as recently as a week ago.”
Investigators say Hesse met the majority of the victims during overnight outings with a youth group at the Evangelical Free Church.
During his hearing, Caleb had the nerve to say he was not guilty of these crimes.
As of now, his bail was set at 2.5 million dollars.

Ron Paul doesn't fully endorse Mitt Romney

Ron Paul was asked to speak in RNC convention, but quickly turned them down. Why? Well, they wanted him to play by their rules, but in all, he doesn't really care for Mittens.

The NYT reports:
Mr. Paul, in an interview, said convention planners had offered him an opportunity to speak under two conditions: that he deliver remarks vetted by the Romney campaign, and that he give a full-fledged endorsement of Mr. Romney. He declined.

“It wouldn’t be my speech,” Mr. Paul said. “That would undo everything I’ve done in the last 30 years. I don’t fully endorse him for president.”
I'm hoping for his folks to disrupt the convention.

In Maryland: Homophobic Lawmaker injures children in a Drunken Boat ride

Interesting how life works. A Tea Party Republican, Don H. Dwyer has made a name for himself by pushing homophobic initiatives in Maryland. He has said gays are a threat to kids and gay marriage would lead to homosexuality being taught in schools.

Don also tried to ban gay marriage and impeach any public official who showed any support for gay marriage.

Since he seeks to protect the children from the horrid gays, he actually put some in great danger. This weekend, he injured 5 children while driving drunk on a boat.

GayStarNews report:
Maryland delegate Don H. Dwyer Jr was drinking with another man on his boat on the Magothy River in Pasadena around 7pm when his boat struck a smaller vessel with five children on board.

Four of the children were injured with one, a five year old girl, taken by helicopter to Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

Two adults on the boat were unharmed.

The smash was so severe that Dwyer’s boat sunk in the river.

Dwyer later admitted to having a blood alcohol level of 0.2 – twice the legal limit.

‘It is true that I was drinking while operating my boat,’ Dwyer told a press conference outside the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he is being treated.

‘No one, no one, should be drinking and operating a motor vehicle or powerboat.’

‘I deeply regret my actions, and I ask for forgiveness from the public. My heart and prayers go out to the family that was involved in the accident, and I pray for them to have a speedy recovery.’
Folks are calling on Don to resign.

Former Republican FL Governor Charlie Crist endorses President Obama

Charlie Crist writes a huge love letter about why he's endorsing President Obama.

He said:
I’ve studied, admired and gotten to know a lot of leaders in my life. Across Florida, in Washington and around the country, I’ve watched the failure of those who favor extreme rhetoric over sensible compromise, and I’ve seen how those who never lose sight of solutions sow the greatest successes.

As America prepares to pick our president for the next four years — and as Florida prepares once again to play a decisive role — I’m confident that President Barack Obama is the right leader for our state and the nation. I applaud and share his vision of a future built by a strong and confident middle class in an economy that gives us the opportunity to reap prosperity through hard work and personal responsibility. It is a vision of the future proven right by our history.

We often remind ourselves to learn the lessons of the past, lest we risk repeating its mistakes. Yet nearly as often, our short-term memory fails us. Many have already forgotten how deep and daunting our shared crisis was in the winter of 2009, as President Obama was inaugurated. It was no ordinary challenge, and the president served as the nation’s calm through a historically turbulent storm.

Will Lana and Andy Wachowski handle the Justice League film?

The geekverse is buzzing about the possibly of them directing the Justice League movie. Apparently, they were on the short list.

Moviehole has more
What I’m told is Warner Bros are apparently jazzed with “Cloud Atlas”, and love that it’s as much a spectacle as it is a showcase for the immense ensemble involved, so it makes sense the W’s are under consideration. “Justice League” needs to be as big on character, as it does bells & whistles, and the Wachowski’s could probably offer that.

The directing duo have also gave the studio one of their most successful film trilogies of all time, “The Matrix” trio (I won’t mention “Speed Racer”).

Quite a few reasons why WB would consider the directing duo a viable option for “Justice League”, but would Lana and Andy even consider it? Hard to say. They definitely like to work at their own speed, and definitely like to do their ‘own’ thing as opposed to being merely one ‘cog’ in a venture, so I can’t see them jumping through hoops to pull the strings on a ‘we want it done now’ large corporate statement like this. Still, exciting possibility nonetheless.
They could pull it off, I mean, they gave us The Matrix.

Words from his family:
"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request: Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
Rest in Peace.

10 Reasons why we need 'A Different World' 25 years later

The super-talented Debbie Allen tweeted this yesterday
Many fans went crazy over this because we remember what a fantastic show 'A Different World' was. If it comes back, it would so good on so many levels.

So to share my views; I have 10 reasons why we need A Different World 25 years later.
  1. There are no Black shows of quality. The Tyler Perry coonery ain't cutting it.
  2. We need a series that focuses on Black youth.
  3. We need to see college as a positive, learning space for growth and creativity.
  4. Everybody wants to see the original cast make an appearance or two... four.
  5. The Black community needs to positive Black images and role models on TV.
  6. Television should have diversity.
  7. With the current state of racism and bigotry, ADW could use the show to address these issues.
  8. We will see diverse Black characters. This show gave us Denise, Whitley and Freddie. Before then, we just had the same old same.
  9. There are more stories that can be told in a deeper matter. Meaning, the new ADW could be a drama versus a comedy.
  10. I'm interested to see what Debbie can do with a new generation.
I would love to see a new version of the show. We need more Blacks on TV and something more than sad mouthy (unmarried) housewives and sorry cheating men.

So, bring back 'A Different World'
