An Explosion in Harlem causes Two Buildings to fall and Two People are Dead

Wow!

I saw the news on my way to work. Two buildings on 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue, between 116th and 117th streets collapsed, leaving 17 injured and 2 dead.

The explosion is believed to be caused by a gas leak. There will be more news later, but this what I got for now.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of wounded and dead.

In Harlem: A Transgender Woman was Savagely Beaten across the street from the Police Station

What is really going on?

A transgender woman named, Islan Nettles was a victim of a savage hate crime that actually across a the street from a police station last Saturday.

Seriously, across the street from the police station!

After fighting for her life the last few days, Islan was declared brain dead and taken off life support. Her murderer was arrested and his charges will be upgraded from a misdemeanor soon. But I can't get over the fact, that no one helped Islan or that she was beaten so close to a police station... That's outrageous to me!

To the friends and family of Islan. Stay strong and remember the good times.

Is Harlem experiencing a new (Gay) Renaissance?

Harlem, NY is becoming gayer according to NY Daily News.  More LGBT people of color are finding the historic area to be supportive and welcoming. And during this pride month, folks came out in huge numbers to celebrate.

Harlem does not count the array of gay clubs and bars that have long been a staple of Chelsea and the West Village; there are no establishments that display a rainbow flag in the window. But the number of gay-friendly meeting places has been on the upswing.


Red Rooster Harlem, Corner Social, Lenox Lounge, Melba’s and Billie’s Black, along with Club El Morocco, Picante and others, are all regarded as part of Harlem’s gay nightlife.


Along with the state’s ratification of the Marriage Equality Act, the evolving positions of the NAACP and President Obama have fostered a growing acceptance among members of the black community.

“There is a shift that’s happening,” says Pastor Joseph Tolton, whose Rivers at Rehoboth congregation ministers to hundreds of black gay and lesbian worshippers each week.


“It’s intangible, but it’s just starting to bubble up and coming to the surface . . . you can feel it.”

I have to get back to NYC and see this 'new' Harlem. I'm excited about the direction its going.

Dumbass Pastors in Fear of Harlem Pride

"God does not want to see homosexuals in our parks." This statement is coming from some stupid pastor who doesn't want a gay picnic in Marcus Garvey Park for Harlem Pride. And the sad part is, that pastor isn't alone in his views.

"If children start to believe it is okay to be gay, they will think it's okay to be a pedophile or have sex with animals," said Dr. Ronald Ferguson, the senior pastor at Antioch Church of God on W. 124th St. "It's a slippery slope."

Ferguson, who has three adult children and four grandkids, said he expects parishioners to follow his lead and stay indoors when the second annual Harlem Pride event arrives June 24.
"This gay pride nonsense is an abomination," Ferguson told the Daily News. "God does not want to see homosexuals in our parks."

Neither do Ferguson or some other local pastors fuming over the celebration of gay rights set for Marcus Garvey Park.

"The park is a family area, and the homosexual agenda will do nothing but harm the community," said Pastor Charles Curtis of Mount Olivet Baptist Church.
"Due to our religious beliefs, we do not support ... that event."

I love how these fools use these dumb excuses. The celebration picnic is all about freedom and pride. Nobody's trying to destroy the Black family. These pastors need to get a clue and STFU.

Florida Atlantic University will host “The Harlem Renaissance: As Gay as it was Black”

Florida Atlantic University will showcase a new exhibition called “The Harlem Renaissance: As Gay as it was Black”.

This exhibition will address the gay world within the Harlem Renaissance. For years, folks didn't want to mix the two, but now the truth will be told. I'm actually excited about this.

The Harlem Renaissance, which occurred in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s, shaped black culture for generations and influenced American society. The movement was “surely as gay as it was black, not that it was exclusively either of these,” according to historian Henry Louis Gates, whose research the exhibition’s title is extracted from.

“I think most people like to draw neat little identity lines around people,” said Jack Rutland, executive director of the Stonewall Library Museum Archive in Fort Lauderdale, which organized the exhibition. “With this exhibition, we hope to blur those lines to show that when people come together in a place at a time, amazing things can happen when identity ceases to matter quite so much.”

Few of the artists and writers profiled in the exhibition can be considered “out” or “gay” in any modern sense of the terms. The Harlem Renaissance was moved along by men and women who led double lives. Many imbued their work with coded references to their sexuality.

Profiled are such famous people as writer Richard Bruce Nugent, whose “Smoke, Lillies and Jade” is praised as the first published black gay short story. Langston Hughes, who is considered one of the foremost writers of the Harlem Renaissance and author of “The Weary Blues,” also is featured. Zora Neale Hurston, a writer and folklorist whose best known work “Their Eyes Were Watching God” was set in Central and South Florida in 1937, is another leading figure profiled. Poet and novelist James Weldon Johnson, a Jacksonville native who with his brother John Rosamond composed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the song now known as the Negro National Anthem, is another artist the exhibition pays tribute to.

The exhibition also features a section acknowledging that not all contributors of the Harlem Renaissance were homosexual. Historian W.E.B. Du Bois; actor Paul Robeson; artist Aaron Douglas; dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson; songwriter Eubie Blake; bandleaders Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway; and musicians Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller are among those noted.

The Harlem Renaissance ended with the outbreak of World War II. In the ensuing post-war decades, the sexuality of many of its leading figures has been overlooked.

“It was a subject that none of us at Stonewall had seen addressed very fully in any of the existing literature on the Harlem Renaissance,” said Rutland. “We also discovered it was a wonderfully unusual gay/lesbian history story. Usually the history of a minority in America ended up being a tale of repression and rebellion. This was a tale of creativity, cooperation and coming together.”

What does Vincent Morgan and Harold Ford Jr. have in Common?

They are cousins!!!

However, the cute Harlem investment banker/Congress hopeful is nothing like his cousin (my ex-husband).

Morgan also appears to have none of Ford's political baggage. He is firmly pro-choice and unequivically believes in Marriage Equality, a position potentially at odds with many of his prospective Harlem constituents. "Some advisors have warned it would be unwise to support same-sex marriage, but this is just the right thing to do," says Morgan, whose campaign has formed an LGBT campaign committee. "We've let the religious right marshall this debate," he adds. "But to me, this is simply about relationships -- I support same-sex marriage and everyone's right to have their own relationships respected."

Morgan's sentiments are hardly surprising considering his unique background. While many of his cousins -- and 15 half-siblings -- were at prep school like Harold, Jr., "I grew up poor, I dropped out of high school and got some help by people who believed in me," says Morgan who ultimately finished high school before enrolling in Howard and eventually completing graduate school at Columbia University. "I know what it's like to feel like an outsider. I was the 'light-skinned' kid in an all-Black neighborhood, I did not have a father, I was wedged between groups."

Today, Morgan hopes to channel that earlier sense of isolation into unifying Harlem as he challenges Rangel for New York City's coveted 15th Congressional District.

Interesting. I wonder if he will campaign on the behalf of his cousin? Or will they be at odds?
