Who is the "they" that can relate to him because he's so white and straight-acting.
Oh, the straight white audience he doesn't want to offend by telling a true story about the LGBT struggle.
I was thinking of seeing this because I wanted to judge for myself, but this self-indulgent quote about a straight-acting boy being more acceptable makes me want to tell Emmerich to kiss my ass.
