Our Princess

Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute annual gala was the bomb. This year's theme: Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy. To celebrate the event, Vogue's Grace Coddington enlisted Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci, Dolce & Gabbana, Martin Margiela, John Galliano for Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Rick Owens, and Giorgio Armani to custom-make ensembles with certain comics characters in mind.

The characters include: Catwoman, Poison Ivy, The Silver Surfer, Aurora, The Legion's Dawnstar and of course, Batman.

And to make it super duper, Miss Carter, Lynda that is, made an appearance.

The Bad Boys Club

Since I'm on this Greek trip, I thought I would address this issue about the MIAKA's or Men Interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha.

What are MIAKA's? Well basically, they're gay black men who pledge and follow some of the rituals of the historic black sorority. It's like a their own greek system that gives them the opportunity to hang out and meet others like them.

Recently there were several articles about this guys pledging and posting pictures online. While some people were indifferent, a lot of folks were outraged. I found some of these articles and I want to share some of the pieces.
  • We can only blame ourselves, Black Men. We got to take more responsibility and ownership of the lives of our youth, no matter if its our relatives or the kid next door. This Epidemic Plaguing Or Young Black Men Has Got To STOP!
  • The media portrayed the group as a rogue “new” faction of gay men, dead set on infiltrating AKA, the nearly century-old sorority. AKA National stressed MIAKAs had “no official or unofficial standing with the sorority.” MIAKAs claimed foul play. Both parties threatened lawsuits. As the debate raged, one thing became clear: The controversy was less about the sanctity of AKA and more about homophobia. A self-proclaimed Omega Psi Phi member posted, “I can care less about being politically correct. Homosexuality is wrong and it is tolerated too much, especially on our Black campuses.” One AKA proclaimed, “God is not pleased with this.” Others called it “sick.”
Okay, so people were mad, but I don't it's that serious. Yes they copied the AKAs but was anyone hurt? And were the levees broken? No, but homophobia showed it ugly ass in this situation. After reading the articles I was appalled with notion that this is an "epidemic" and how black men has failed little black boys. Now on that note, I think black men has failed by not providing diversity in their roles. Thinking that black men should be this one type of male is ridiculous. Hell, you fail yourself for being so close minded.

And if this is an epidemic then put it all over me. I rather be gay than a thug, in jail, or angry for no apparent reason. An epidemic, child please, being gay is a miracle.

These guys are doing nothing dangerous. They are just having fun. But, I think they shouldn't copy AKAs. They should form their own group, and this group should empower them and keep everyone aware of their presence. I think it is great that they have a support network, a home, a family to turn to. Did anyone stop to think that the idea of MIAKAs is not only harmless, but encouraging to the young black gay males who are teased and hated on.

I guess they didn't, they can only think about the hellfire and brimstone song and dance. The MIAKA group is a step in good direction. Maybe these guys can move on to something else and inspire younger gay kids to get together, stay in school, and lead others.

Oh BTW, I used to be Emerald Knight, something very similar to the MIAKA group.

The Wire: The College Years

San Diego State University has suspended six fraternities after a sweeping drug investigation that landed members of three fraternities in jail on suspicion of openly dealing drugs on campus. These frats are:

Theta Chi

Lambda Chi Alpha

Phi Kappa Psi

Phi Kappa Theta

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Sigma Alpha Mu.

The inquiry -- prompted by the cocaine overdose death last year of a freshman sorority member led to the arrests of 96 people, 75 of them San Diego State students. A second drug death occurred during the investigation.

29 people were arrested early Tuesday in raids at 9 locations including the Theta Chi fraternity, where agents found cocaine, Ecstasy and three guns. 18 of those arrested were wanted on warrants for selling to undercover agents.

Theta Chi and five other fraternities have been suspended pending a hearing on evidence gathered during the investigation, dubbed Operation Sudden Fall. Some drugs bought and sold by students were traced to gangs linked to Mexican cartels, according to the DEA. Agents collected about $100,000 worth of drugs that were being advertised in "resale quantities" between members of the fraternity and other students.

And I thought you could get lifetime brotherhood, maybe undercover closeted fun, and awkward tattoo. This is something else, I tell you.

Black History in May

A Virginia resident quietly made history, becoming the state’s first openly LGBT African-American elected to public office. In his first bid for elected office, Lawrence Webb won a seat on the Falls Church City Council by a margin of 39 votes. He joins two other candidates on the City Council: Nader Baroukh and Robin S. Gardner.’

This is great news, finally something different than Detroit Mayor of Inanity, Kwame Kilpatrick. I hope he can make changes, while presenting powerful and positive images of gay people.

Good Luck, Larry!

Dead Classic

The Return of the Living Dead!!

This is one of my faves right here! I remember watching this and thinking this could happen. And it didn't help that I was watching this on a late rainy Halloween night. Also this movie took place in Louisville, KY, which was only 4 1/2 hours away from Union City, TN (my hometown).

This was my first zombie movie and I've been a fan ever since. Every time this scream treasure comes on, I have to watch it. This horror movie defined the times back in the 80's and I believe it set the trend for zombie movies. The biggest thrill/scene for me was when the zombies came out to "party", the theme music and imagery was brilliant. I just love it, love it, love it.

The new X-Men cartoon

This looks interesting. I was checking out some comic book sites when I ran across the new X-Men cartoon. Here is a quick description:

"Wolverine and the X-Men" begins as an explosive event shatters the lives of the X-Men and takes away their mentor, Professor X. The beaten heroes, including Beast, Storm, Cyclops and Nightcrawler, walk away from it all but then they are given a rare glimpse into the future, where they see a world in utter ruin…ruled by giant destructive robots. They discover the world has spiraled out of control because the X-Men have given up. So now the most legendary of all X-Men, Wolverine, must take the lead on the ultimate mission -- to prevent the world's destruction -- while fending off enemies Magneto and The Brotherhood.

Don't date this man, save him!

So I surfed the internets to find that the Designer turn Madame Mess, Marc Jacobs is dating another porn star/rent boy. Really? Marc, what is really going on? This ain't cute, you're not impressing anyone. In fact you are providing fodder for self-esteem gurus everywhere.

Why are you dating these "lost boys"? (I'm excusing Erik Rhodes, because I like him and he's real). What do they really do for you, besides, um, their jobs. It's clearly a sign of low self esteem and worth. I mean we all have been there, but you keep on, keeping on. Focus on your fashion and stop presenting your one man mess-o-drama. It's silly and embarrassing...but entertaining at times.

But seriously, save your money, find a grown man, and make me a Wonder Woman cape .

By the Goddess! Gossip Girl is trying to be a New Mutant!!

This is odd, I mean after the success of Iron Man, they want to do this to us?

Check it out

Black Book Magazine
reportedly spoke with Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz, who says he's developing a prequel, but it isn't one like Origins. (What's with the desire for all these X-Men prequels!?) Schwartz says: "I'm very well aware that I'll be bludgeoned by purists, but I love its mythology, and it comes with a pretty hefty paycheck." His idea for this whole affair is to follow a teen who attends the Xavier Institute. He says he won't be adding any new characters, so the question becomes: Which lucky X-Men character will Schwartz focus on? The writer goes on to diss The Incredible Hulk, saying that it "looks like it's going to be terrible. And why does he look like he's fighting against the monster from Cloverfield?" So, if he can pull this off to his tastes, it should be, at the very least, better than Hulk. Even after the disappointment of the latest X-Men movie, I'd love to see another movie pop up with more than just Wolverine or Magneto. Unlike most action or geek fare movies, where I fall for the movie as a whole, I really dig a lot of the characters in X-Men and the way the actors portray them. I've spoken before about how much Hugh Jackman rocks as Wolverine, but there's also Magneto, Professor X, Mystique, and my other big favorite -- Anna Paquin's Rogue. But this will be something entirely different, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a whole different set of actors. So, does this sound good to you, and which character should Schwartz be focusing on?

This man can't be trusted, he writes for Gossip Girl!!! I can't go through another mess of a movie, like X-Men 3 again. I hope it will not be a sex-filled, overly fashion, mutant high. Oh Goddess, this is scary. I know I am jumping to conclusions but his street cred isn't any better than Ratner the Hutt and I thought Zak Penn was doing this movie or movies anyway. If Schwartz is on the X-Men project, please don't let him screw this up. I can't help but to think that we are heading into the Batman & Robin phase. Please Josh don't mess this up!!

However, Chuck isn't bad, there could be some hope. But I don't know...

Oh, the humanity!

Look out! The Avengers are coming!

Marvel this morning released its First Quarter 2008 numbers this morning, and along with them, news that officially, an Iron Man sequel is slated for 2010 along with Thor, and two “Avenger-themed” movies in summer of 2011: Captain America (May) and The Avengers (July).

This could be good for Marvel! But I wonder who would be the Avengers? My line up would be:
Cap, of course
Falcon
Black Panther
Wasp
Iron Man
Thor
Scarlet Witch
Vision (maybe)
Hawkeye

Any others to add?
