Lieberman & Reid will bring a Standalone repeal of DADT

After the foolishness of today, Joe Lieberman is taking the DADT repeal out of NDAA and making it a standalone deal.

The Hill reports:

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Thursday he'll introduce a free-standing bill to repeal the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Lieberman said that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) agreed to bring legislation to the floor to do away with the military's prohibition on openly gay and lesbian service members.

The Connecticut independent said that he would introduce the legislation as soon as today with language that mirrors an amendment to the defense authorization bill.

Senators failed to begin debate on that defense bill in a vote this afternoon, with even some Republicans who favor repealing "Don't ask, don't tell" voting to sustain a filibuster.

A few blogs and LGBT news sites are already dooming the DADT repeal for this year. They are using this clip from Sen. Reid this morning.

Nothing truly defeating, but to some, the game is over. However Sen. Joe Lieberman presents another possibility... Keep sessions going.

On Monday, Lieberman tweeted a blog post from Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart, saying that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) should keep the chamber in session this year until it passes a bill ending “don’t ask, don’t tell.”

Lieberman’s office said he’s determined to repeal the policy before the session ends.“Sen. Lieberman is working closely with colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and he is confident that there are at least 60 votes to repeal ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ this year, provided that leadership allows fair and reasonable time to debate the National Defense Authorization Act,” said his press secretary, Erika Masonhall. 

“Wanting to go home is not an acceptable excuse for failing to pass a bill that provides essential support for our troops and veterans and failing to take action that the president, the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have called for.”

I think this is great possibility and hopefully, they can get this done. I don't think we are down and out, as long as they push for this, anything is possible

Lieberman, Udall, Gillibrand join together to end DADT

Three Senators: Joe Lieberman, Mark Udall and Kirsten Gillibrand are urging their colleagues to repeal DADT by passing the Defense Authorization Act.

Here's the press release:

WASHINGTON, DC – Senators Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Mark Udall (D-CO), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) issued the following statement today urging the Senate to pass the National Defense Authorization Act and repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy this year. 

“The Senate should act immediately to debate and pass a defense authorization bill and repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ during the lame duck session. The Senate has passed a defense bill for forty-eight consecutive years. We should not fail to meet that responsibility now, especially while our nation is at war. We must also act to put an end to the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy that not only discriminates against but also dishonors the service of gay and lesbian service members. 

“The National Defense Authorization Act is essential to the safety and well-being of our service members and their families, as well as for the success of military operations around the world. The bill will increase the pay of all service members, authorize needed benefits for our veterans and wounded warriors, and launch military construction projects at bases throughout the country. 

“The process established by the defense bill would also allow ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ to be repealed in an orderly manner, and only after the President, Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have certified to Congress that repeal is ‘consistent with the standards of military readiness, military effectiveness, unit cohesion, and recruiting and retention of the Armed Forces.’ If Congress does not act to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in an orderly manner that leaves control with our nation’s military leaders, a federal judge may do so unilaterally in a way that is disruptive to our troops and ongoing military efforts. It is important that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ be dealt with this year, and it appears that the only way that can happen is if it is on the defense bill. 

“We are pleased that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has also called on Congress to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’ We must act upon our responsibility to our troops and their family members and to the thousands of gay and lesbian service members who serve their nation bravely and honorably by passing the National Defense Authorization Act before the end of the year.”

Sen. Ben Nelson will Vote in favor of Repealing DADT

Think Progress reports that Sen. Ben Nelson will vote "yes" on a the DADT repeal.

I will support the Lieberman compromise because it removes politics from the process. It bases implementation of the repeal on the Pentagon’s review and a determination by our military leaders that repeal is consistent with military readiness and effectiveness, and that the Pentagon has prepared the necessary regulations to make the changes.

“I spoke to Secretary Gates and he advised that while he preferred waiting until the study is completed, he can live with this compromise.

“The Lieberman compromise shows that Congress values the Pentagon’s review that will include the advice and viewpoints from our men in women in uniform, from outside experts and from the American people about how to implement the repeal. It rests ultimate authority to make this change with our military leaders. I believe this is the right thing to do.”

Nelson's vote will help the measure go out on the carpet for a full vote.

DADT repeal Tomorrow?

This is interesting news! The DADT repeal may start tomorrow

Tomorrow, Senators “Joe Lieberman (ID-CT), Carl Levin (D-MI), Mark Udall (D-CO), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Roland Burris (D-IL) will hold a press conference to introduce legislation to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” according to a press release.

The Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010 contains three provisions: it will repeal the law that prevents gay Americans from openly serving in the military, prohibit discrimination against service members on the basis of sexual orientation, and promote the establishment of Reserve Officer Training Corps units at elite colleges and universities.

Alright, we will watch tomorrow.

Joe Lieberman to head up the DADT Repeal?

Really? Well, according to NY Daily News:

In an exclusive interview with the Daily News, Lieberman told me that his commitment to repealing DADT is twofold. First, allowing gays to serve openly fulfills the bedrock American promise of providing citizens with "an equal opportunity to do whatever job their talents and sense of purpose and motivations lead them to want to do - including military service." Second, and no less important for a lawmaker whose commitment to national security the Pentagon can't doubt, is that "When you artificially limit the pool of people who can enlist then you are diminishing military effectiveness."

"My own experience as a member of the Armed Services Committee, visiting our troops on bases here in this country and abroad, particularly in war zones, the most remarkable quality you'll find is unit cohesion," he told me. "What matters is not the gender of the other person in your unit or the color or the religion or in this case the sexual orientation. It's whether that person is a good soldier you can depend on. And that's why I think it's going to work."

This is very interesting to hear! But to be really honest with y'all, I don't trust Joe. His actions has not been great to say the least, but who knows.

I just hope he doesn't f**k it up.

Joe Lieberman is a Jerk

Word is, nickel-faced Joe Lieberman told Harry Reid that he will filibuster health-care reform if the final bill includes an expansion of Medicare.

He said he wouldn't, but now he will (bastard).

Lieberman punctuated the discussion by telling the majority leader directly that he will vote against the bill if the Medicare buy-in and public option provisions remain in it.

The pledge by Lieberman to oppose the bill represents a potentially huge setback for reform proponents, many of who saw the latest round of policy compromises as the last true chance to corral the needed votes. That said, leadership has several fallback options (none of them promising) should Lieberman follow through on the threat.

The first is to convince the senator to support Democrats in breaking a Republican filibuster before casting a vote against the bill. This would allow for the legislation to pass with Lieberman still registering his opposition. Lieberman, however, has said he considers the procedural vote to cut off debate to be of the same significance as a vote on the bill itself.

So I guess, he should get his resume together. The Dems will get him if he stands firm with this decision.

Nobody wants your Broke Ass!

With his buddies and career in flames, Joe Lieberman is begging to come back home to the Dems. I guess I saw that coming, with his lover McCrack moving to Loserville.

But my question is... Do they want him back or in the same position? Reid asked Lie Lie to step down from his previous role as chairman of the homeland security committee and do something else. Lie Lie didn't say yay or nay, but tried to appeal to the Dems steering committee.

But seriously does he think they would go over Reid's head? No.

In fact, Reid say this after their discussion:
"Today Senator Lieberman and I had the first of what I expect to be several conversations. No decisions have been made. While I understand that Senator Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our Caucus. I expect there to be additional discussions in the days to come, and Senator Lieberman and I will speak to our Caucus in two weeks to discuss further steps."

So it looks like Joe Lie Lie is going to be the new executive assistant to Sasha Obama.
