Accused Murdered of August Provost Killed himself in Jail

Petty Officer Jonathan Campos was found unresponsive in his jail cell.

Later they found out that he was dead.

Officials say the apparent cause of death was asphyxiation.

This is causing people to really wonder about his innocence or involvement in this murder. Hopefully, something will pop in the investigation.

A Sailor has been Charged for August Provost's Death

Interesting news, y'all

The U.S. Navy says a sailor has been charged in military court with murder and other offenses in the shooting death of a gay San Diego seaman.
Petty Officer Jonathan Campos of Lancaster, Calif., was charged Thursday in connection to last month's fatal shooting of Seaman August Provost of Houston.
They say Campos, a 32-year-old gas system technician, is being held at the brig and is cooperating with investigators.

I am curious to see what happens next. If he is the killer, then we need to know why.

Prominent Black Organizations push for an investigation in Provost's Death

This is powerful.

NBJC, Black Leadership Forum, NAACP, Congressional Black Caucus, National Urban League, National Council of Negro Women, 100 Black Men, Inc., and many others Black organizations have joined Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in the call for an full investigation of August Provost's horrible death.

This is a strong move and a supportive push from prominent Black organizations. I hope that other groups (gay) can come together and work for the common good...maybe someday that will happen.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee wants full investigation of August Provost's Death

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee does not play games when it comes to civil rights.

She is demanding a congressional inquiry into the death of August Provost.

More to come on this topic, but I have to say I'm always impressed by the sheer power of this woman.

Investigators believe August Provost's death was a "Random Act"

Tragic death of August Provost has caused his family to ask questions. His complaints were not taken seriously and now he's dead.

His family want answers...and we do too. He was shot 3 times, tied up and burned. That was done out of anger and hate.
Rose Roy of Beaumont said her nephew, Navy Seaman August Provost III, had complained a year before about being harassed for being gay.

Roy said she advised Provost to report and document the incidents, but she said the military did little to help.

“He went to the Navy to serve and protect,” she said in an interview with Beaumont’s KFDM News, “he didn’t get protected at all.”

Roy told The Associated Press that the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy discouraged her nephew from asking for help.

“That phrase is just stupid because it tells them they have no one to speak to,” she said.

The family plans to hold funeral services July 10 in Houston.

Democratic Rep. Bob Filner of San Diego said Thursday he wants a Defense Department investigation into the death, after leaders of the city’s gay community asked him to intervene.

Investigators have called the sailor’s death a random act unrelated to the his sexuality and have taken a “person of interest” into custody. No charges have been filed.

Roy said Provost joined the Navy in March 2008 to pay off college debt.

This is beyond tragic. I really hope they find this person or people who did this. Now, I could be assuming and I could be wrong, but I believe his murder is a hate crime.

A Gay Salior was found dead on Base

This is tragic and, yet a strong reason to deal with DADT in timely and detailed fashion.
The body of a 29-year-old sailor was found in a Camp Pendleton guard shack Tuesday, and a “person of interest” was taken into custody in connection with the suspected homicide, Navy officials said yesterday.

The body of Seaman August Provost of Houston, Texas, was discovered about 3:30 a.m. on the western edge of the base, said Doug Sayers, a spokesman for Navy Region Southwest.

An autopsy was completed yesterday, but authorities were waiting for results of toxicology tests to determine a cause of death.

A “person of interest” was being held in the Navy brig at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. No charges have been filed.

The death has local gay activists calling for a formal investigation into whether Provost was slain because of his sexual orientation.

“We're definitely monitoring this and trust and hope the military will investigate this in the professional way it should,” said Nicole Murray-Ramirez, chairman of San Diego's Human Rights Commission. Murray-Rameriz also has contacted Reps. Susan Davis and Bob Filner, asking that they make official inquiries to the military concerning an investigation.

The Navy would not comment on whether Provost's orientation had anything to do with the death.

“While 'Don't ask, Don't tell' is in place, anybody in the military who is a homosexual has no place to go to get assistance or counseling,” said Ben Gomez of Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, an advocacy group for gays in the military.

Provost's boyfriend, Kaether Cordero, said yesterday that Provost was openly gay but kept his private life quiet for the most part.

“People who he was friends with, I knew that they knew,” Cordero said from Houston. “He didn't care that they knew. He trusted them.”

I hope they solve this soon.
