Folks of a certain age know Jean as Edith Bunker from the prolific TV series,  'All In The Family'

She was a great actress and will be missed.

Now that Matt Smith announced he's leaving Doctor Who, I thought it would be fun to pick a new Doctor.

But I'm doing this differently than most fanboys. I'm picking a more diverse group of actors. It's time to put some more color in the Tardis.

Black Lawmakers tell LGBT Activists: Don't Blame the Black Caucus over the stalled Illinois Marriage Equality vote

The falled Illinois marriage vote blame has begun, and guess who getting the blame. Black folks! ding, ding, ding!

But the funny thing is, you can't blame the Black caucus. In fact, two members of the Black Caucus — Rep. Ken Dunkin and Rep. LaShawn Ford spoke out about it:

“It’s larger than that. We have 118 members and we have 71 Democrats who could have passed this bill,” Ford said. “So the fact that we didn’t pass it is not the fault of the Black Caucus. What happened is that we had democracy at its best and the people spoke and their representatives listened.” 

In addition, Dunkin said marriage equality is not a civil rights issue and marriage equality advocates may have offended black lawmakers when they equated the two. 

“Sorry, this is not the Black Caucus’ burden issue,” he said. “We shouldn’t be wearing the jacket for this. That would be unfair and disingenuous to have the Black Caucus wear the jacket because there are 71 Democrats.”

What's been disheartening is how several LGBT bloggers and activists blame them without knowing everything that happened.

I'm not siding with the Black Caucus because I'm Black. I"m just saying it's lazy and irresponsible to do so if you don't have all the facts.

So, to those who completely blamed the Black Caucus, shame on you.

Matt Smith is leaving Doctor Who at the end of 2013

Matt Smith has announced that he is leaving Doctor Who. He will regenerate into someone new in the 2013 Christmas special.

After four years, Matt will move on to other projects. However, he has nothing but love for the franchise.

Now, this will be a great time to introduce a woman or a person of color as the Doctor... Or both.

The Reality behind the Economic Status of Gays

The Williams Institute will release a study focusing on the real economic status within the LGBT community. If you thought that we were better off than our straight fam, you would be very wrong.

NBC News reports:

The biggest issue is that LGBT people are invisible in most big surveys. The biggest surveys that the Census Bureau does have asked no questions about sexual orientation or gender identity. Every survey has questions about race, about marital status, about disability, about ethnicity, about whether people have kids – all these things that matter in people’s lives and influence people’s vulnerability to poverty – but they don’t ask whether you’re lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in most surveys. They have started asking about household relationships in ways that allow us to identify people who are living with an unmarried partner of the same sex. That’s created a big statistical revolution in terms of LGBT research but there still are a lot of people who are left out.

And

There are lots of people in same-sex couples who are poor, and that is an important takeaway. The gap is clear in the raw data for some of these comparisons. For example, for lesbians, if you just look at the poverty rate for women in same-sex couples (7.6 percent), it’s higher than the poverty rate for women in different-sex couples (5.7 percent). For gay men, it’s a little more complicated a story, and race plays a big part. The economic status of lesbians is quite different and often more vulnerable compared to men. It’s a reminder of just how much of an important role gender still plays in determining people’s economic outcome.

In Illinois: The Marriage Equality vote push back to November

Sad news for the LGBT community in Illinois.

The hopes to vote on marriage equality has been pushed to November. Rep. Greg Harris did not call for a vote on his gay marriage bill.

His speech showed his disappointment:

“As chief sponsor of this legislation, decisions surrounding the legislation are mine and mine alone. Several of my colleages have indicated they’d not be willing to cast a vote on this bill today, Harris said shortly after 7 p.m. 

“And I’ve never been sadder to accept this request, but I have to keep my eye, as we all must, on the ultimate prize. They’ve asked for time to go back to their districts, talk to their constituents and reach out to their minds and hearts and have told me they’ll return in November with their word that they’re prepared to support this legislation. 

“And I take my colleagues at their word they shall.”
