The Truth about Poor Republicans

Poor Republicans are a weird bunch. They vote for the folks that keep them poor, time and time again. But now, we might know the reason. The Pew Research Center has some answers:

In a Pew Research Center survey conducted in early October, 57% of lower-income Republican and Republican-leaning voters said the government does too little for poor people. Just 18% said it does too much.


By contrast, higher-income Republicans took the opposite view; by roughly two-to-one (44% to 21%) Republicans with incomes of $75,000 or more said the government does too much, not too little, for poor people.

This is not to say that lower-income Republicans have a better view of the federal government generally. They are just as distrustful of government and angry at government these days as are higher-income Republicans. But in a December 2011 poll, lower-income Republicans expressed a decidedly different view about the fairness of the economic system than did those with higher incomes. 

Interesting, right? The Dems are trying to save the poor and they... They join the Tea Party, the group who consistently vote against their own interests. And, they are mad at the government for not caring enough? Somebody give me a drink while I try to understand this mess.

Herman Cain, This is 'Brainwashed': The 53%

The 53% is a broke as version of the 99%. They are saying that we should suck it up and grow a pair. But the gag is, they are the really and truly, victims:

But what makes "We Are the 53%" so heartbreaking isn't that its contributors are enormous jerks—it's that so many of them could just as easily be writing in to We Are the 99 Percent. Like the guy on the left, who can "barely afford" his rent. Or the "former marine" in the center who hasn't had "4 consecutive days off in 4 years." The phrase "I don't have health insurance" pops up frequently on "We Are the 53%," but not as a cry for help or an indictment of a broken system. Here, it's a badge of pride.

You'd think that someone who "never had the option of parental health insurance to age 26" would see why such a policy makes sense, or that a person who used welfare and food stamps after suffering an injury and losing her job might understand better than anyone else the value of a social safety net. But, nope! Basic ideas (some might even call them "human rights"!) like "paid time off" and "health insurance" and "a living wage" are apparently the demands of an unreasonably entitled parasitic class. This is where the best of American values meet their most masochistic applications. Did you work 60-70 hours a week for nearly a decade to get a college degree after serving in this country's military? 

This is America! Drive on! Do you now have two different jobs, neither of which will pay you insurance? Suck it up, whiner! Driving a shitty car and narrowly making ends meet? Stop whining and suck it up! And if any of those problems are directly attributable to reckless, self-serving behavior on the part of enormous banking conglomerates, for God's sake don't blame them! You are the 53 percent!

 They are the 53% and they are sadly lost.

We are Not as Fab as You think

The myth that gays have money to burn, is really a myth.

The truth was revealed in a study done by the Williams Institute at the UCLA. They found that lesbian and gay couples are more likely to be living in poverty than other couples.

The analysis found that 7 percent of lesbian couples are living below the poverty line, compared to 4 percent of gay male couples and 5 percent of opposite-sex couples. The study also found that after “adjusting for a range of family characteristics that help explain poverty,” same-sex couples are “significantly” more likely to be poor than opposite-sex married couples.

About 24 percent of lesbians and bisexual women are poor, compared to 19 percent of straight women, the study says. About 15 percent of gay and bisexual men are living in poverty, a rate that’s akin to the 13 percent of straight men who are poor, the report says. “The myth of gay and lesbian affluence is just that — a myth,” the report says. “Lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals are as likely to be poor as are heterosexuals.”

The report also revealed a number of other findings related to poverty and gay couples:

• Children of gay couples are living in poverty at a rate that is twice as much as the children of straight married couples;

• Black people in same-sex relationships are gay couples who live in rural areas are much more likely to be poor than white or urban same-sex couples;

• Gay couples are more likely than straight couples to receive government support intended for low-income families.

So don't fooled by the Prada glasses, the True Religion Jeans or the Circuit Party trips...hopefully these folks are saving money. I know I have to for my Louis Vuitton obsession.
