Sam Smith and the Oscar Gaffe heard around the World

Last night, Sam Smith won an Oscar for the his song that James Bond movie. In his acceptance speech, he said:
"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. If this is the case—even if it isn't the case—I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world."
Um, okay, Sam... However, you wasn't the first. There was Melissa Etheridge, Elton John, Stephen Sondheim. And that's just in the same catagory. Classical composer John Corigliano, songwriter Howard Ashman, Sir John Gielgud... Bill Condon won for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999, Alan Ball won Best Original Screenplay for American Beauty, and Pedro Almodóvar won Best Original Screenplay for Talk To Her. And then, Dustin Lance Black who won for Milk and even talked about being gay in his speech.

So, no, Sam's not the first. It was a simple mistake... A mistake riddled in privilege and twinkism, but hey. I didn't expect Sam to be a wealth of LGBT knowledge, but if you have a chance to win an Oscar, you should be better prepared. And he wasn't, not only for that, but the backlash. Sam was dragged for that statement. He came off like a true gay millennial, only aware of the now. Then Dustin sent out this tweet.

Wow! Anywho, it was a mistake, a gaffe that I hope Sam learned from. He's young, so he will be forgiven. However, he needs to brush up on his LGBT history if he's going to play the spokesperson.

Interesting Quote: Sam Smith

“I’ve never had a boyfriend so I don’t really know any different, which I think is very lucky actually. I’m still learning on what’s right and what’s normal in dates.”

“I think with anyone, you have to learn how to trust people and there’s different challenges and hurdles in my life now but I’m trying to remain as normal as I was before.”
Aww, Sam.

Sam Smith to sing the latest James Bond Theme

Sam Smith will sing the latest James Bond theme for the movie, Spectre. The song is called “Writing’s on the Wall.”

Sam said:
“This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honored to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.
I hope it's good, because when I think of Bond themes, I think of SHIRLEY MUTHA F**KING BASSEY! And no one tops her songs!

Are Russell Tovey and Sam Smith together?

Lord, this is messy.

British tabloid, Mirror, claims that Russell Tovey and Sam Smith are boyfriends.

From their site:
Is there love in the air for Sam Smith and actor Russell Tovey? The two chums were getting on like a house on fire backstage at Hyde Park on Sunday night.

But our party source says there is nothing going on because Russell, 33, has a new boyfriend.

“Sam and Russell know each other through the party scene,” the source says. “But Russell is smitten with his new man so there isn’t room for romance.” What a shame.

Sam, 23, and Russ were hanging out with Strictly judge Bruno, 59, and TV presenter Lizzie Cundy, 45. Other stars included former Radio 1 presenter Chris Moyles, 41, who is still enjoying his “retirement”.
Trashy, but you never know, right?

Sam Smith's Debut Album hits Big on the Billboard Charts

Sam Smith's debut album will peak at #2 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. He sold 166,000 copies of his first CD.

That's huge, y'all!

Sam also broke the record for highest UK male artist first week debut album sales in the 23-year history of Soundscan.

The young soul singer is about to take America by storm! And it's very neat to know he's gay too.

Congrats Sam!

British singer Sam Smith comes out as Gay

British singer Sam Smith comes out as gay in an interview with The FADER magazine.

Who is Sam Smith? Well, this talented guy has a strong soulful voice that has captured many by the heart strings. His first hit, Stay With Me was to die for and I became an instant fan. His latest video, Leave Your Lover is also a strong single, but raised questions about his sexuality. But now, he reveals the truth and the inspiration for his EP.
You sing a lot about love and relationships. What’s been your experience with love? I’ve never been in a relationship before. I’ve only been in unrequited relationships where people haven’t loved me back. I guess I’m a little bit attracted to that in a bad way. In the Lonely Hour is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back. I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn’t felt love before. I’ve felt the bad things. And what’s a more powerful emotion: pain or happiness?

Does he know he largely inspired the album? He does. I told him about it recently, and obviously it was never going to go the way I wanted it to go, because he doesn’t love me. But it was good as a form of closure, to get it off my chest and tell him. I feel better for it. I feel almost like I signed off this part of my life where I keep giving myself to guys who are never going to love me back. It feels good to have interviews like this, to chat about it and put stuff to bed. It’s all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him.
