Of course he was, because he was an actor playing the role of a gay man in a series that, for its time, presented graphic portrayals of gay men having sex.
That was the job, and anyone who wants to read anything else into it is a fool.
Now, let's ask NPH if he was "okay" with playing a straight man on TV because, you know, he's gay and all, so, yeah, how was that ... kissing a woman stuff.
