As a resident of South Carolina--though not a member of the district in which he ran for office--I can safely say it's because he's Republican.
That R by his name is all some of these morons needed to see before they cast their votes.

Charleston and the surrounding area is filled with stupid people.
Yeah, the majority of those whom reside in that district and voted do reek of stupidity. Nobody in their right mind outside of the South would have voted back in office philandering, lying bastard like Mark Sanford. Oh yeah, you can say most of them were *cough* white *cough*
