Closure to the Brandon White Case

It's been awhile since I talked about Brandon White. Way back in February 2012,  Brandon was attacked by three men because he was gay.

Well, after court dates and hearings, Christopher Cain and Dorian Moragne were sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. And the other dude, Darael Williams was also sentenced for 5 years in state prison.

They were charged with a hate crime.

UPDATE Protect Marriage was Denied! No Challenge to Ninth Circuit's Prop 8 Lift

We just had a good laugh at this.

Protect Marriage deebs are trying to stop the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal from moving up the date for gay marriages to take place.

Yes, these cretins are waisting their time, but it's fun to watch. READ some of their press release:
Today the Proposition 8 legal team filed an emergency petition to U.S. Supreme Court to stop the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal's premature move requiring same-sex "marriage" licenses in California, weeks before the Supreme Court's decision even goes into effect. The petition, prepared overnight, was submitted Saturday to Justice Anthony Kennedy, the associate justice who decides such motions pertaining to the Ninth Circuit.
When the Ninth Circuit originally put in place its stay to prevent same-sex marriage pending Supreme Court action, it stated clearly that “the stay shall continue until final disposition by the Supreme Court.” Under Supreme Court procedural rules, "final disposition" comes when the Supreme Court issues a "mandate" to the Ninth Circuit, at least 25 days after announcing its opinion in the case. The 25-day waiting period is provided to allow parties such as Prop 8's proponents to petition the Supreme Court for a re-hearing of the case.
Today's petition asks the Supreme Court to find that the Ninth Circuit had no jurisdiction to order same-sex marriages on Friday, since the case had not yet come back down from the nation's highest court.
They are sooo out of business.

UPDATE: They were denied! SCJ Kennedy rejected their challenge and basically tells them to deal with it.

The Vatican has a Twink Prostitution Ring?

Well, if this is real, it's going to be big stuff.

The Examiner claims that The Times will release info (from a convicted pedophile priest) about a Twink prostitution ring inside the Holy Roman Church. There is proof that an Italian military cop picks up immigrant boys, who are underage, and brings them to the priests.

The 'talking' pedophile priest is Don Patrizio Poggi and he has dropped a bunch of names to the Italian police. These folks consist of four priests and a Monsignor, and right now, four of these creeps are under investigation by Rome magistrates.

But if this story grows, will be enough to break the Vatican down?

I guess there will be more to come.

HOUSEQUAKE! Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issues order allowing Gay Marriage to happen in California NOW!

This just came out, folks!

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has lifted a stay on the Prop 8 ruling, allowing gay and lesbian couples to get married, effective immediately!

So good, especially after Tony Perkins said that the Prop 8 ruling would take years to be effective:

Federal Government extends Employee Benefits to Gay and Lesbian couples

The good stuff keeps on coming!

The United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will extend benefits to Federal employees and annuitants to legally married gay and lesbian couples!

You can read the whole thing below

President Obama said:
“Today my Administration announced that, for the first time in history, we will be making important federal employee benefits, including healthcare and retirement benefits, available to eligible married gay and lesbian couples and their families.”
This is getting better fast.

YouTube shows LGBT support in the #ProudToLove Channel

Last night, I attended YouTube Pride Party at their main building (it's cool, BTW).

There, we learned about YouTube's new LGBT initiative by supporting videos within the community. On their main page, YouTube stated:
At YouTube, we’re proud to stand with the LGBT community to support equal rights and marriage equality – we believe that everyone has the right to love and be loved. Pride Month may be coming to a close, but we hope YouTube is a place where you can feel proud and build a community all year long.
YouTube is inviting LGBT folks to participate in their #ProudToLove campaign by creating a video to show your pride.

Interesting Quote: State Rep. Brian Sims

“About two hours ago, I shopped around a co-sponsorship memo for a marriage bill, and I’m going to introduce an LGBT marriage equality bill helped light the fire under my colleagues to do it now. The co-sponsorship memo, which is sent out to House members for additional support, notes it “would re-define the definition of marriage as a civil contract between two people who enter into matrimony, and eliminate the current prohibition against same-sex marriage in our Commonwealth. It is important to note that this bill provides protections for religious organizations and entities that do not wish to sanction, perform, or in any way recognize such marriages.”
PA State Rep. Brian Sims will introduce a marriage equality bill.

Lesbian & Gay Bi-National Couples are eligible for Green Cards

After the death of DOMA, bi-national gay couples got some good news. They will be able to apply for green cards on the behalf of their international partners. That's good, or at least a strong step in the right direction.

Again, these couples will receive immigration benefits, which includes green cards.

With green cards, these couples and families can actually be together. This completely changes the game for married gay and lesbian bi-national couples.

But there's still more to do on this front, but now some of the weight will be lifted.

Brian Brown whines about the Death of DOMA

In this latest email message:
In my view, the worse of the two decisions is the Proposition 8 case. For six long years, NOM and our allies have fought with everything we had to preserve what God Himself created — marriage, the foundation of society itself. NOM was the largest contributor to putting Proposition 8 on the ballot. I personally uprooted my family and lived for several months in California to help campaign for its successful passage. And we've contributed several hundred thousand dollars to help preserve it through many legal challenges.
I've got a message for the Supreme Court: We're not going to take their wrong decisions sitting down. The decision refusing to hear the Proposition 8 appeal has rewarded the utter dereliction of duty by California's Governor and Attorney General, whose legal obligation was to defend initiatives adopted by the people. That leaves in place the erroneous decision of a single San Francisco federal court judge, who made an illegitimate attempt to legislate from the bench.
So dramatic, Brian. Are you trying to become a nominee for Best Actress in a Dramatic Role?

I guess so

President Obama challenges Senegalese President over Gay Rights

While traveling abroad, President Barack Obama spoke about his feelings towards gay rights. In Senegal, the President said that gay rights/equal rights should be recognized universally. However, the Senegalese President Macky Sall rebuffed Obama's statement saying:
"We are still not ready to decriminalize homosexuality. This does not mean we are homophobic."
The President listened to him, but stated to Sall that regardless of religious backgrounds, it's important to have nondiscrimination under the law.

I appreciate President Obama's global message about gay rights. Hopefully, his message challenges the other countries in rethinking their old ways.

Flashback: National Organization for Marriage Gathering Storm TV Ad

Remember this?

Interesting Quote: Brian Brown

"There is a stench coming from this case that has now stained the Supreme Court. They've allowed corrupt politicians and judges to betray the voters, rewarding them for their betrayal. It's an illegitimate decision. We and millions of other Americans will refuse to accept this rogue decision rewarding corruption.
The Supreme Court invalidated Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage under federal law as the union of one man and one woman. Section 2 of DOMA, which codified the long-standing right of states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states or countries, remains in effect and was not challenged. "We also urge Congress to reject the inevitable attempts to dismantle remaining elements of DOMA, including the right of states to refuse to recognize so-called gay marriages performed elsewhere. The vast majority of American voters have expressed with their votes their desire to maintain marriage as the union of one man and one woman. That decision should be respected and left undisturbed."

I said that he has to believe in love. But he said 'not really'. I never heard anyone say that before. I wonder what happened to make him feel that way? I kinda hurt my heart to hear that. I think you have to believe, you have to believe that someone will love and cherish you.

Yeah, you have to believe in love... Because if you don't, what else do you have to believe in?

Interesting Quote: Attorney General Eric Holder

“The Department of Justice will continue to carefully monitor jurisdictions around the country for voting changes that may hamper voting rights. Let me be very clear: we will not hesitate to take swift enforcement action — using every legal tool that remains available to us — against any jurisdiction that seeks to take advantage of the Supreme Court’s ruling by hindering eligible citizens’ full and free exercise of the franchise. Like many others across the country, I am deeply disappointed with the Court’s decision in this matter,” the attorney general said. “This decision represents a serious setback for voting rights - and has the potential to negatively affect millions of Americans across the country.”

New Character Posters for Shingen, Mariko, and Harada in THE WOLVERINE

And so it begins... Texas is taking advantage of the Voters Rights Change

This is how the foolishness starts
Within two hours of the Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act, Greg Abbott, the attorney general for the state of Texas, announced that a voter identification law that was blocked last year by the Justice Department would go into effect.

“With today’s decision, the state’s voter ID law will take effect immediately,” he said in a statement. “Redistricting maps passed by the legislature may also take effect without approval from the federal government.”

In March 2012, the Justice Department objected to Texas’ voter identification law, finding that under certain data sets “Hispanic registered voters are more than twice as likely as non-Hispanic registered voters to lack such identification,” and that the locations and hours of license offices made it difficult for many Hispanics to attain that identification.

Texas also sought clearance through the an appeals court in Washington, which offers a separate track for jurisdictions under the Voting Rights Act. In a unanimous opinion, the three-judge panel ruled that the voter ID law would hinder minority turnout and impose “strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor.”
This is how things fall apart. I hope Holder knocks this down.

Supreme Court: Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act Unconstitutional

This could be a scary time.

Today, SCOTUS said Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional.

What does that mean? Well, the judges limited key provision in the original Act and invalidated the key enforcement provision that applies to all or some parts of 15 states with a history of voter discrimination. SCOTUS wants Congress to fix the key parts of the Voting Rights Act.

The message is race is no longer an issue and we have to trust lawmakers and their intentions. Too bad, I don't. We saw what happened in 2012 and these folks are still trying to suppress the vote.

It will be up to Congress to come up with a new plan for the states and these voting laws will need to be cleared by the government or in federal court. And if Congress has to fix this, then we are in for one Hell of a show.

READ the Statement from the Board of Directors to OutServe-SLDN over the Allyson Robinson's Drama

The OS-SLDN Board and staff are in the process of transforming the organization from primarily a legal services organization into a membership services and advocacy organization. This not only includes revising our business model to operate effectively under new political and financial realities, but is also part of a larger effort to increase the role of the organization’s 6,500 members in the leadership and direction of the organization.

This past Saturday an email containing the contents of confidential internal discussions of the OS-SLDN Board of Directors was erroneously distributed to an email list containing recipients outside of the Board of Directors. The board would like to clarify that the drafted item was only part of a series of discussions aimed at transitioning the organization in what has been a rapidly changing financial and political landscape facing the LGBT movement, which will soon include a Supreme Court decision on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act. As is the case with many of our partners at this critical time, OS-SLDN is facing real and significant financial obstacles, forcing the Board to look critically at all aspects of its operations and to consider difficult decisions, including cutting costs and staffing reductions.

Board Co-Chair, Josh Seefried, stated, “There is no excuse for the series of events that transpired this past weekend. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I sincerely apologize for this as well as the impact it’s had on our staff’s and members’ trust and confidence in the organization. Allyson Robinson has led OutServe-SLDN as one of the most transformational leaders of this movement, and there is not a member serving on this board who does not respect and admire her work for this organization and the LGBT movement.”

“Allyson has continually put our LGBT service members, veterans, and their families first in the changes the organization has faced since the repeal of DADT,” stated co-chair April Heinze. “As many in our community know, the LGBT movement is evolving quickly, and so will its institutions. Many people thought that after the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ all the military LGBT organizations would or should disappear. As Allyson Robinson and her staff have so powerfully and effectively reminded the nation, the mission for full equality in our Armed Forces is incomplete.”

Robinson, a 1994 graduate of West Point, has led OutServe-SLDN through some of the movement’s most significant victories since the repeal of DADT, including the public vetting of Chuck Hagel for the office of Secretary of Defense, the highlighting of ongoing discrimination against gay and lesbian military families at Ft. Bragg and elsewhere, and the extension of non-DOMA restricted benefits to same-sex military partners. She has worked tirelessly to put military families at the center of the discussion of the Defense of Marriage Act and has become the nation’s leading advocate for transgender inclusion in the military.

In light of these events, the board and Allyson will be working together toward a successful transition of the organization. Allyson will continue to serve as Executive Director throughout this period.

OS-SLDN operations and planned events, unless explicitly noted, will continue as planned to include the 2013 OutServe-SLDN Leadership Conference which will be held in San Antonio, Texas in October.

Allyson Robinson releases a Statement about the OS-SLDN issue

This weekend’s events were most unfortunate and deeply troubling for many of us, but for my part, as from the beginning of my tenure with this organization, I am fully and firmly committed to our LGBT service members, veterans, and their families and to their fight for equality. For that reason, and to honor those who’ve shared those values with me, it is my intent to continue to lead OutServe-SLDN in the near term as we approach an historic moment for our community and our country. After that, at a date to be determined, I have decided of my own accord to step down, and will work with our members to ensure an orderly transition to the next phase of this organization’s life.

Very few people ever get the opportunity in this life to hear from those whose lives they’ve touched just how much they are loved and respected. I have no words to express my gratitude for the hundreds who have reached out to me privately or stood up for me publicly over these last 24 hours to show their support: from the military community, the LGBT community, and most especially, most dear to me, the troops of OutServe-SLDN and their families. For that, I am blessed beyond measure.

In light of the momentous events the coming days hold for us all, I intend to put this matter behind us and look forward to shifting the focus back to where it belongs: our LGBT service members, veterans, and families, who sacrifice so much every day, and their ongoing fight for full equality.

OutServe-SLDN fires Director, Senior Members Resigns

There's a catastrophe happening over at OutServe-SLDN. About a couple of days ago, executive director Allyson Robinson was basically fired. Why? I don't know, I haven't found out why. In fact, I don't think many of us know the real reason.

Anywho, her firing has cause senior staffers and one board member to resign in protest.

Folks are not talking and it's looking like a hot mess in Hell. But why is everyone so hush, hush about this? And what really happened? Folks just don't up and resign like this, so something was said or done to cause this drama?

And what about Allyson? Why was she fired? During Netroots, folks were praising her, so none of this makes sense. Unless she's the one who cause the IRS scandal in Benghazi, what did she do?

Buzzfeed reports that Allyson won't talk about it at this time, but I think it's odd that the organization has not released a statement.

Trust, I will keep y'all posted. Until then, check out my Bossman Bil's post on the matter. He broke the news first and it's updated constantly.

The American Family Association pray to stop Marriage Equality

These people are asking God to save America from the gays.

Here's their prayer
We pray for the pending Supreme Court decision on same sex marriage. We pray that next week the Court would not impose a false definition of marriage on our nation. Father, we confess that we in the Church have already sinned against You and have not been good stewards of the gift of marriage through our own issues with unfaithfulness, selfishness, pornography, homosexuality and divorce. Forgive us, Lord. Now our nation is following our imperfect example and seeks to redefine and corrupt the gift of marriage in order to satisfy its own lusts. We acknowledge that through Jesus Christ we can repent and turn to You. So help the people of this nation to turn to You with repentant hearts, that we all may be covered in Your grace. Lord, have mercy on us. Lord, let Your purity and truth shine in this situation. Help us to proclaim to those enslaved by homosexuality, and any other sin, that liberty and identity is available in Jesus Christ. Help us to lovingly embrace the repentant.
Don't you love hate and bigotry dipped in prayer and holiness?

My Highlights of Netroots Nation

I spent 5 days with a bunch of progressives at Netroots Nation. It was truly a good time and I loved hanging out, educating folks and being refreshed in the activist game.

I'll share some highlights:

  • The LGBT connect was very strong this year. A lot of new people and new discussions. However, there were a lack of people of color present. That has to change.
  • With marriage possibly moving aside, the focus is on ENDA. The plan to achieve this will be tough.
  • Theme of the conference was 'No Heckling'
  • Actually talked to GetEQUAL members and expressed my concerns. And guess what, they listened.
  • The economy, immigration, and women's rights were a huge part of the conference.
  • During the Black Caucus, we struggled to agree on a Black Agenda or a need for one.
  • During the LGBT Caucus we met Barney Frank.
  • It was noted that LGBT activists need to develop cohesive and long-term strategies.
  • I asked for real conversations about Race and the LGBT community.
  • The sessions were very informative and productive.
  • I learned in the tech world, more and more techies of color are on the rise.
  • Howard Dean is short.
  • Hecklers are usually two steps away from madness.
  • Some of the aggressive messaging we use for LGBT equality falls on deaf ears.
  • I suggested that we step out of the bubble to bring more folks in.
  • As progressives, we can party anywhere... Like baseball fields.
  • I've made some good friends from Netroots.
  • I'm not really a social drinker.
  • LGBT activists struggle with fashion.
  • The student loan debt is really out of hand.
  • Black progressive are the future.
  • Blerds
  • Coalition building is highly important and paramount to our movement.

Interesting Quote: Brian Brown

Today, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska announced her support for redefining marriage and leaked that news in advance to the Human Rights Campaign, a far-left activist organization.
Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, responded: "Senator Murkowski has sealed her political fate. Alaskans voted by an overwhelming majority (68%-32%) to protect marriage in their Constitution when given the opportunity, and an even stronger majority of Republicans in Alaska supported that move; thus, her betrayal of marriage is tantamount to political suicide."
Brown continued: "This is what happens when politicians abandon their grassroots and their party and get cozy with far-left Washington, D.C. lobbyists. Senator Murkowski won a narrow write-in victory in 2010 but has erased her chances of being elected to another term through this act of political gamesmanship."
Brown concluded: "Furthermore, it is clear Senator Murkowski has fallen for the lies of same-sex 'marriage' activists. Religious freedom is deeply threatened wherever marriage is redefined, with the majority of states that have redefined marriage offering little more than fig leaf religious freedom protections to institutions and individuals who believe in marriage as the unique union of one man and one woman. NOM will be active in educating Alaskan voters about Senator Murkowski's choice to betray marriage and disrespect the convictions of a majority of her constituents."

James Gandolfini died of an apparent Heart Attack

With Netroots going on, I forgot about James Gandolfini's death.

He died yesterday of an apparent heart attack while he was in Rome.

James was 51.

Also, if you remember the final scene of The Sopranos, I got some news for you.

The ice cream shop paid tribute to the actor with a 'Reserved' sign at the table the Sopranos sat in the final scene.
