NOM's Fake Video is Too Funny... Part 2

This looks like something Stan Freberg would make as a joke, for example:

Interesting Quote: Brian Brown

“In the last two weeks, we’ve seen mothers harassed, children threatened, and outrageous efforts to disrupt and drown out our rallies from gay marriage activists. Rather than repudiating these tactics, major gay rights leaders are now blaming NOM for the behavior of their own supporters. This is irresponsible and wrong, and we call on them to repudiate these tactics, which are being driven by their outrageous persistent efforts to paint Americans who believe marriage is one man and one woman as haters or bigots. What they really hate is that we are showing middle America the real face of the gay marriage movement, on videotape, for all the world to see.”

Oh, Brian please.

The Starlite Lounge will close

One of most iconic gay bars is closing down.

Brooklyn's own, Starlite Lounge, will end it's 40 year legacy today.
In a message posted on the home page of the Starlite Lounge website, the establishment’s management and staff remark, “It is with a heavy heart that we are forced to announce that the Starlite Lounge has lost its highly-publicized battle to stay open in its landmark location.”

The lounge is described on the site as “the oldest black-owned non-discriminating bar/club in the heart of Brooklyn, New York.”
The lounge’s clientele ranges from drag queens and locals to fashion models and celebrities.

Even Madonna is rumored to have visited the Starlite.
I went to the Starlite years ago when I was working at Cornell. I loved it! It was full of life and flash... I hate that it's closing down.

If I was ballin', I would buy it and keep it going.

New Rumor: JLo will replace Ellen on American Idol

I hope this is a rumor. Folks are saying it's JLo will replace Ellen on Idol.

ET reports:

Jenny from the block is going to take undiscovered talent from their own hometown blocks and turn them into blockbuster successes. Multiple sources confirmed to ET on Thursday night that a deal is signed, sealed, and delivered for Jennifer Lopez to permanently preside as a judge on "American Idol."

Back in 2007, JLo mentored "Idol" contestants and will now be returning to the show for good to nurture contestants week in and week out during their season 10 journey to be crowned the next "American Idol."

"American Idol" told ET they have "no comment on any of the rumors or speculation."

Anne Rice is not a Christian anymore!

Our favorite author of dramatic vampires has left Christianity.

"In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control," the author wrote Wednesday on her Facebook page. "In the name of ... Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

Rice, 68, is best known for "Interview With a Vampire" and other gothic novels. Raised as a Catholic, she had rejected the church early in her life but renewed her faith in recent years and in 2008 released the memoir "Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession."

In a telephone interview Thursday, Rice said she had been having doubts for the past two to three years. She was troubled by the child abuse scandals in the church, and the church's defensive reaction, and by the ex-communication of Sister Margaret McBride, a nun and hospital administrator who had approved an abortion for a woman whose life was in danger.

"I believed for a long time that the differences, the quarrels among Christians didn't matter a lot for the individual, that you live your life and stay out of it. But then I began to realize that it wasn't an easy thing to do," said Rice, speaking from her home near Palm Springs, Calif. "I came to the conclusion that if I didn't make this declaration, I was going to lose my mind."

Well, that why I left too, Anne.

Ellen is LEAVING American Idol

Wow, that was fast!

Ellen DeGeneres is leaving Idol:

“A couple months ago, I let FOX and the American Idol producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me,” she said in a statement. “I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.”

The Emmy winning star remains the host of her popular daily syndicated talk show. As the fourth judge replacing Paula Abdul, she never seemed to find her footing on the show.

“I … realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had, I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.”

Sherrod Says She's Going To Sue Breitbart's Evil Ass

I am glad to hear this, so glad.

Shirley Sherrod is going to sue Andrew Breitbart for this racist foolishness.

Ousted Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod said Thursday she will sue a conservative blogger who posted an edited video of her making racially tinged remarks last week.

The edited video posted by Andrew Breitbart on his BigGovernment.com website led Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to ask Sherrod to resign, a decision he reconsidered after seeing the entire video of her March speech to a local NAACP group. In the full speech, Sherrod spoke of racial reconciliation and lessons she learned after initially hesitating to help a white farmer save his home.

She said she doesn't want an apology from Breitbart for posting the video that took her comments out of context, but told a crowd at the National Association of Black Journalists annual convention that she would "definitely sue.''

Vilsack and President Barack Obama later called Sherrod to apologize for her hasty ouster. Vilsack has offered her a new job at the department, which she is still considering.

"I have many, many questions before I can make a decision,'' Sherrod told the group. "I don't know what will happen from this day forward in terms of whether I'll be back in the department or what I'll do.''

E-mails to Breitbart's websites seeking comment were not immediately returned Thursday morning.

Take EVERYTHING you can from him!

I'm done experimenting but there's plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life. A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine. A lot of people say I seem masculine, but I don't feel it. I feel intrinsically feminine. I'd love to be one of the boys but I always felt a bit on the outside. Maybe my masculine qualities come from overcompensating because I'm not one of the boys."

Arizona's Wicked Governor, Jan Brewer will appeal the Block on SB 1070

This spotted dog doesn't know when to quit! Jan wants to appeal the block on the racist immigration law.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said Wednesday she would swiftly appeal a judge's ruling blocking key parts of a new state immigration law, vowing to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.

"This fight is far from over. In fact, it is just the beginning, and at the end of what is certain to be a long legal struggle, Arizona will prevail in its right to protect our citizens," Brewer said in a statement.

She said the state would soon file an expedited appeal after District Judge Susan Bolton blocked parts of the law which would have given police the power to check the immigration status of all suspects.

Bolton also suspended parts of the law, which goes into effect on Thursday, requiring everyone to carry proof of their residency status and making it a crime for illegal immigrants to seek work.

Jan, give it up.

UPDATE: GetEQUAL shut down of the Capitol Rotunda

See the protest below

Metro Weekly has the deal:

A little before noon today, July 28, eight individuals associated with Get Equal, who had been taking an ordinary tour of the U.S. Capitol, began a protest once they reached the Capitol Rotunda. As statues of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and others surrounded them -- including a bust of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. -- the eight were arrested within an hour for "Unlawful Conduct - Demonstrating in the Capitol Building," according to the U.S. Capitol Police.

At first, the eight stood silent in the middle of the Rotunda with signs serving as a "reminder" to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) that she had promised a vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act this year. The eight then, as the Rotunda was being cleared of visitors and media, sat down, began pounding the marble floor and chanting for a vote on ENDA.

"Speaker Pelosi, I am somebody," the eight chanted, "And I deserve job protection, right here, right now."

Those arrested, according to Get Equal, were Orelia Busch, Charles Butler, Sean Carlson, Shannon Cuttle, Robby Diesu, Erica Knapp, David McElhatton and Zack Rosen of the blog The New Gay.

Okay, but I want to see this action done to our enemies too. I haven't seen much of that yet.

Judge Blocks a Key Parts of Arizona's SB 1070 law

Judge Susan Bolton just blocked the key pieces of Arizona broke ass immigration law.

NY Times reports:

In a ruling on a law that has rocked politics coast to coast and thrown a spotlight on the border state’s fierce debate over immigration, United States District Court Judge Susan Bolton in Phoenix said some aspects of the law can go into effect as scheduled on Thursday.

But Judge Bolton took aim at the parts of the law that have generated the most controversy, issuing a preliminary injunction against sections that called for officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws and that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times.

Judge Bolton put those sections on hold while she continues to hear the larger issues in the challenges to the law.

“Preserving the status quo through a preliminary injunction is less harmful than allowing state laws that are likely preempted by federal law to be enforced,” she said.

“There is a substantial likelihood that officers will wrongfully arrest legal resident aliens,” she wrote. “By enforcing this statute, Arizona would impose a ‘distinct, unusual and extraordinary’ burden on legal resident aliens that only the federal government has the authority to impose.”

The judge’s decision, which came as demonstrators opposed and supporting the law gathered here and after three hearings in the past two weeks in which she peppered lawyers on both sides with skeptical questions, seemed unlikely to quell the debate.

Only 10% of the DADT Surveys are done

This is interesting. Just 10% of the 400, 000 DADT surveys are completed.

Here's the scoop from Stars & Stripes

Only about 10 percent of the 400,000 "don't ask, don't tell" surveys sent out three weeks ago have been returned, and Pentagon officials are lobbying troops to fill out the rest before the Aug. 15 deadline set for the research.

The survey, featuring more than 100 questions on perceptions of troops’ morale and behavior before and after a repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, is designed to give a Defense Department working group a better sense of servicemembers’ concerns about allowing openly gay troops in the ranks. Originally, researchers had planned on contacting only 200,000 troops with the survey, but Defense Secretary Robert Gates doubled that number to get a broader range of reactions.

But gay rights groups have questioned the value of the survey, and the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network warned closeted gay troops against participating in the exercise. Even though the survey will be conducted by e-mail through an outside contractor, SLDN officials said that promise of anonymity didn’t offer enough security for troops who still could be kicked out under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.

Defense officials could not say whether that negative reaction has hurt response rates, but are urging everyone who received the survey to fill it out. A similar survey will be sent out to 150,000 military family members next month.

I wonder if the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network will be blamed for the low turnout. It's a possibility and an ugly fallout if that happens. I hope they have a spin ready, because this may not be pretty if the survey below 50%.

An Open Letter to Nancy Pelosi about ENDA

Several LGBT orgs wrote a letter to Nancy Pelosi about putting ENDA on the floor.

Here it is:
From San Francisco Pride at Work, One Struggle, One Fight, GetEqual, Harvey Milk Democratic Club, Transgender Law Center, National Center for Lesbian Rights, El / La, and National Pride at Work

An Open Letter to the House Speaker on ENDA

We are writing to express how extremely troubled we are that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) has not yet been scheduled for a vote by the full House of Representatives. We believe a floor vote must be scheduled for ENDA immediately.

It would be devastating for LGBT workers for this Congress to not complete its work on ENDA before the end of this session. ENDA would be historic in the number of LGBT people who would benefit from its passage. During this economic crisis, it is more important than ever to prohibit the often impoverishing effects of workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Most LGBT workers have no protections from workplace discrimination. ENDA would provide legal protection against discrimination nationally. Over and over we have been promised that a vote would be scheduled on ENDA, and these promises have been repeatedly broken. In 29 states, it is still legal to fire someone solely because they are lesbian, gay or bisexual. And in 38 states it is legal to fire someone solely for being transgender. The current version of the bill would outlaw discrimination on both sexual orientation and gender identity.

A 2006 study by the San Francisco Bay Guardian and the Transgender Law Center found that 60 percent of transgender people in San Francisco earn less than $15,300 per year, only 25 percent have a full-time job and nearly 9 percent have no source of income.

Only 4 percent reported making more than $61,200, which is about the median income in the Bay Area. More than half of local transgender people live in poverty, and 96 percent earn less than the median income. Forty percent of those surveyed don't even have a bank account. What this study reveals is that even in a city that is considered a haven for the LGBT community, transgender workers face profound employment challenges and discrimination.

A 2007 meta-analysis from the Williams Institute of 50 studies of workplace discrimination against LGBT people found consistent evidence of bias in the workplace. The analysis found that up to 68 percent of LGBT people reported experiencing employment discrimination, and up to 17 percent said they had been fired or denied employment.

Public opinion polling shows that Americans are overwhelmingly in favor of making sure LGBT Americans get the same employment opportunities as everyone else. In fact, the latest surveys shows that nearly 90% of Americans support workplace fairness for LGBT workers.

As you know, in a few weeks, Congress will finish it's legislative business for the year so that they can return to their districts to run for re-election. Last month at a LGBT Pride event, Congresswoman Jackie Spier announced to the LGBT community that not only would we not get ENDA before the end of the legislative session, that she did not think we would get it for five years because we won't have enough votes in Congress again to ensure passage. It is ironic that Congress plans on leaving town and going home to campaign for their own jobs while leaving thousands of LGBT workers without protections for the next five years. When 90% of Americans support workplace fairness, it is challenging to believe that anyone fears a backlash from the voters. The time to pass ENDA is now. The American people support it, the politicians promised it. No more broken promises. We demand that a vote be scheduled now.

Sincerely,

SF Pride at Work, One Struggle, One Fight, GetEqual, Harvey Milk Democratic Club, Transgender Law Center, National Center for Lesbian Rights, El / La and National Pride at Work

Glee will do the Time Warp again.

Glee is going for it next season. Now, we have news that the musical series will glam it up with a little Transsexual Transylvania!

Billboard reports:

Ryan Murphy also confirmed that "Glee" will take on the campy tunes of the cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" in an upcoming episode, and that the musical numbers featured each week will be reduced from 8 to 5 in order to make more room for developing characters. "It got to be a little much," Murphy says of the musical numbers. "People loved the characters so much that they want to spend more time with them, so we listened and that's what we're going to do.

Torchwood news...

Russel T. Davies gives a small update on where Torchwood will pick up once it's premiers on Starz network:
For faithful viewers you’ll see the same people in the same world, following on. Though it also starts from scratch, because there’s a brand new Starz audience there sitting waiting to be scooped up, new viewers coming to it. But I restarted Doctor Who in 2005 from scratch, so I know what I’m doing. I did it with Children Of Earth, actually – that practically tripled Torchwood’s audience, and noone said to me that they were lost. So it’s a new starting point and yet… as a faithful viewer you do get that awful feeling when something reboots or revamps that you’re not comfortable anymore, and there’s none of that. It’s still Gwen, it’s still Jack, and hopefully more. You’ll feel very comfortable with it. And there’s great new American characters coming into it. Bear in mind, of course, Captain Jack, he’s American as well, so it doesn’t seem quite as alien, I think, as if you suddenly introduced American characters into Emmerdale or something!”

Is Glee's Kurt getting a Boyfriend?

Rumors are spreading about Glee's upcoming season. Especially about Kurt's possible boyfriend.

Movieline thinks they have the deal:
After the jump, Movieline theorizes why the show’s newest addition, Chord Overstreet, will most likely be playing Kurt’s better half.

Deadline is reporting that after a wide talent search, Glee has cast iCarly’s Chord Overstreet in the recurring role of “Sam, a McKinley high school athlete who starts off as Finn (Cory Monteith)’s protégé but becomes his competition.” Sam will be introduced in the second season premiere on Sept. 21. Now, follow along with Movieline’s reasoning as to why Sam is probably Kurt’s boyfriend:

· Back in January, Ryan Murphy revealed that he was adding three recurring roles to the season two cast, including Kurt’s significant other. So far, Glee has already announced that John Stamos and Charice would join the cast in recurring capacities.

· In the same statement, Murphy explained that he was completing a nationwide search for the perfect boyfriend for Kurt. Overstreet was cast after a wide talent search.

· It later leaked that Kurt’s boyfriend will be a member of the McKinley High football team and if Sam is a high school athlete/protégé of Finn’s, he is probably on the football team… unless Finn joins the water polo team next season.

Judge grants Preliminary Injunction to Partner Benefits

This weekend, Judge John Sedwick issued a preliminary injunction to stop Arizona from denying gay and lesbian partners domestic partnership benefits.

AZ Central reports:
The legislation eliminated coverage for non-spouse domestic partners, whether they were heterosexual or gay. Heterosexual couples had the option of receiving benefits simply by getting married. Gay and lesbian couple can't do so in Arizona.
The state argued, among other things, that the law saves Arizona money, to which the judge (in one section of a 33-page decision) says:
"Contrary to the State's suggestion, it is not equitable to lay the burden of the State budgetary shortfall on homosexual employees, any more than on any other distinct class, such as employees with green eyes or red hair."
No word yet on whether the state will appeal. As it stands, gay couples who meet the rest of the eligibility criteria in the state's administrative code will receive the same benefits as married state employees

Police in nearby Waikiki took Abrams into custody on Tuesday and booked him on suspicion of harassment. He was then released on his own recognizance. The woman's name has not been released.

The 40-year-old Abrams performed a concert on Saturday with the recently re-formed Color Me Badd, which had major hits in the early 1990s with slow jams like 'I Adore Mi Amor' and 'All for Love.'

OutServe plans help LGB Servicemembers

A new group is on the rise to support LGB servicemembers. They were called, Citizens for Repeal but now, they are OutServe.

MetroWeekly has the story:

Asked how OutServe, formerly known as Citizens for Repeal, can effectively communicate with the Pentagon while the DADT policy is still in effect, Ty Walrod, the group's civilian co-director and spokesperson wrote in an email response to Metro Weekly on Sunday afternoon, "The answer is, they have no choice. Never before has this pressure come from within the military.

"As the first organization of actively serving gay and lesbian troops, we know they will follow our website outserve.org, pay attention to our press releases, and observe the working examples we can provide for units where gay and lesbian troops already serve openly in their units," he wrote. "No more can they say 'activists' want this; they now have to deal with actual troops."

Co-Director JD Smith, an officer who goes by his initials to protect his privacy, said in a statement, "Active duty and reserve gay and lesbian troops have been critical to the nation's defense, but almost completely absent from the conversation. We're fixing that."

Metro Weekly spoke with Walrod on Sunday afternoon in advance of the group's Monday announcement.

"I'm the only civilian member [of the group]. They obviously can't speak out without outing themselves publicly," Walrod said. "I saw the need for the active duty to have a voice."

About the group, which his primarily organized via Facebook and claims to have 450 active duty servicemembers as members, Walrod said, "It's all private. We absolutely have a critical mass. This underground does exist. And this group, our intention really is to provide a voice for them until they can speak for themselves."

I missed Pacey-Con!

While I was living it up at Comic Con, I missed an exciting event... Pacey-Con!

The actor, Joshua Jackson, was at Comic Con promoting his hit TV show, Fringe. But he decided to go back to his roots and play Pacey from Dawson's Creek; and host his own Pacey-Con.

ohnotheydidnt
blog was there and covered the fills:
Someone wandering around at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend happened to spot Fringe's Joshua Jackson. He says: "I was walking back to my hotel after eating at Cafe Diem to take a break and a small group of people were gathered on the lawn a distance from the convention center. They were standing around Joshua Jackson from 'Fringe', he was staging his own 'Pacey-Con', giving out fan fiction he wrote and getting pictures with the women, all while the 'Dawson's Creek' theme music played on a boom box, it was quite funny, to say the least."
I wish I saw this.

My Comic Con 2010 Recap

2 Days
Over $700 in spending
7 miles a day of walking
Meeting friends and readers
Seeing stars
And hanging out with geeks
That's Comic Con in my world. But I also wanted to do a recap of my experience in San Diego. So here we go.
  • It so fun, I think everybody should at least once.
  • I will stay downtown next time.
  • The hired help were not informed properly. They were giving the wrong info and had no idea what was going on.
  • Nathan Fillion is really hot in person.
  • There were tons of folks there.
  • Doctor Who peeps were very popular this year.
  • The process to get limited Comic Con edition of toys is tired. We shouldn't have to stand in line to get in, stand in line to get a ticket to get the toys and then stand in line to get the damn thing.
  • The costumes are getting better and better.
  • Mattel... supply the demand and quit running out of stuff!
  • Geeks are the best.
  • The gays represented this year!
  • Comic Con is outgrowing San Diego... It's the truth.
  • Putting Supernatural and Smallville panels at the weakest and final day of Comic Con is very telling.
  • The staff must empty of the main ballrooms! We should not spend most of the day in long ass lines, just to get turn away because of folks sitting in there for the last 8 hours waiting to see Vampire Dairies. Make everyone clear out for each session! (someone got stabbed because of this)
  • They need lockers so you can put your items away. It gets tiresome carrying a bunch of toys, comics, posters and figurines all day.
  • Serve healthy food! All they serve is fast BAD food. Please serve wheat bread, baked chicken and turkey slices.
  • To the vendors: When an item, like a X-Men figure that cost $14 bucks, sells out. Don't turn around and sell your sold out figure for $75 dollars.
  • I'm declaring war on these slutty, broke ass Wonder Woman costumes! If you're going to dress like her, do it right!
  • These movie studios use scantly clad women to giveaway promotions for movies, but where are the scantly clad men? We need men dressed up in sexy gear! It's not fair to see nothing but starlets. That's sexism!
  • I want folks to stop wearing those demon/possessed eye contacts at Comic-Con. It ain't cute.
  • Fashion does not exist at Comic Con.
  • I can't wait for next year, but really... Comic Con should come to Los Angeles. We can handle it.

Great Hera! Somebody was stabbed at Comic Con!

I heard about this yesterday. I thought it was rumor, but it's true.

Here's the deal from Robot 6:

Multiple reports are emerging out of Comic-Con International this afternoon of a scuffle over seats in Hall H, ending in a stabbing. The massive room, where many of the film presentations are held, was locked down, and a man led away in handcuffs by police.

Although details are scarce at the moment, Dread Central reports the fight erupted just as the Resident Evil: Afterlife panel was ending about 4:45 p.m. PST. The fight between two attendees allegedly broke out when one of them refused to change seats. According to Dread Central, one man stabbed the other in the eye with a pen.

Here's an update CBR:

Sergeant Gary Mondesir of the San Diego Police Department spoke about the incident.

"Basically, inside of Hall H during Comic-Con, prior to one of the showings, two males got into a dispute," Sergeant Mondesir said. "One male attacked the other male, stabbing him on the side of his eye with a pen. Officers were relatively close by. Citizens within the hall detained the person. Officers came and arrested him, and right now we're processing the scene inside."

The victim was taken to UCSD Medical Center immediately for treatment while the suspect was arrested without incident thanks to the aid of attendees including, as Mondesir said, "The victim's friend actually assisted in taking the suspect into custody."

The sergeant explained that the dispute did break out after one person stated that the other person sitting through a panel to attend a later one should leave. "He'll be charged with assault with a deadly weapon due to the stabbing in the eye," he added of the next step in the investigation. "We are still processing the scene.
