Well, there was Return to Oz in the 80s with my favorite witch, Fairuza Balk, but this is totally different.
This story will involve the granddaughter of Dorothy, may be played by Dakota Fanning.
Dakota Fanning could be poised to don the ruby slippers for a sequel to The Wizard of Oz. But be warned, the studio is claiming this new version will be "darker and more action-packed" than the original 1939 musical. The Wizard of Oz starred Judy Garland as Dorothy, a Kansas farm-girl who finds herself whisked to a technicolor world of munchkins and witches. By contrast, the Warner Bros remake will play out in the present day and chart the adventures of Dorothy's feistier granddaughter.
"You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place," explains co-producer Todd McFarlane. "But she's much closer to the Ripley character from Alien, than a helpless singing girl."
Interesting to say the least. I'll keep y'all posted.

I HAVE BOTH OF THEM 1939 AND THE FARUZ BAULK ONE!
BUT WHY ANOTHER!
HOLLYWOOD NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED BY A HURRICANE AND REBUILT..ITS JUST SO MUCH TRASH!
NOBODY CAN THINK IF ANYTHING NEW TO MAKE BESIDES DUMB ASS SUPERHERO MOVIES!
Heard about this. My interest is piqued.
Nothing will ever touch the MGM Classic. I'm not sure Hollywood knows anymore how to capture the innocence and charm that is timeless in that film.
I keep hearing about these Oz films in production. The CGI will be amazing in these new films. But I'll still take Judy and the gang any day!
I'd be interested to see a Wizard of Oz book that is based more on the books. Their were a number of books and many of them were great!! The Fairuza Baulk movie was much closer to the books than the original MGM movie. It's too bad that the only Wizrd of Oz anyone knows is that one movie. Get the books folks!! Get the books! Lots of movie possibilities with those!
Well... There was a miniseries on SciFi called "Tin Man" that had Zooey Deschanel playing Dorothy's grandmother, but it was pretty lame.
I loved return of Oz and the original MGM classic.
What people don't understand is that OZ is a dangerous place. Yeah, it is fully of magic but in the MGM movie I NEVER got the feeling that Dorothy was ever in any substantial danger...
Return to OZ was more faithful to the original vision of OZ...But it suffered because people were so married to the Garland version.
If you've never seen Return to Oz please do.
Anyway, my interest is definitely piqued. I can definitely see Dakota Fanning in the role too. I am eagerly anticipating this.
