So who's in the Black “Steel Magnolias?”

Remember when I told y'all about the Black Steel Magnolias awhile back? Well, here they are the actresses who will grace the screen.

Queen Latifah will be in Sally Field's role.
Condola Rashad will play her diabetes-stricken daughter, Shelby, played previously by Julia Roberts, and Rashad’s mother Phylicia will take on the role of Clairee, portrayed by Olympia Dukakis. Alfre Woodard will portray the irascible Ouiser, in Shirley MacLaine’s former role, Jill Scott will fill Dolly Parton’s shoes as understanding hairdresser Truvy, and “Pariah” breakout Adepero Oduye will play insecure newcomer Annelle, made famous by Daryl Hannah.

“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding,” said Nancy Dubuc, President and General Manager of Lifetime Networks. “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero, and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage — and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”
This will be an interesting cast to watch.

Wow. A black version of a white movie. How original. I suppose there are no ideas for black ensemble movies out there.

This could be a big hit. Dolly Parton sung a song and nothing much happened, Whitney sung the same some and look what happened?

I'm surprised it's not Oprah playing Queen Latifah's role instead. I'm also always glad to see Miss Jill Scott in ANYTHING! And I'm glad that the breakout star from PArtiah is in this as well. (Surprised they didn't give that to J.Hudson.)

I'm not too mad at them making a black version of a white southern movie. (I would love for it to be reversed though and have them try to make a white, The Color Purple.) Rednecks and Southern Blacks have more IN common than not! Which may be the root of a lot of our problems. Other than the music everything should be pretty similar. I'm not sure how they'll pass off that many wealthy black families either. Especially not for where it is and the time period it's meant to portray. I guess we'll see!
