Now I know WHY the Networks Passed on David E. Kelley's take of Wonder Woman

Okay, Okay, Okay! Now, you know how I LOVE Wonder Woman, y'all know! So after getting bits and pieces of this pilot script, I realized why the networks passed on it.

The concept SUX! This is an insult to the character and the icon. Who told David E. Kelley that this was okay?

Here's what did it for me.
  • She doesn't need 3 identities. George Perez killed that mess in his reboot in 1987.
  • Diana isn't some street fighter, she tackles global issues.
  • Why is taking spinning classes and working out to Lady Gaga? Is this a joke?
  • Diana is running a company called Themyscira industries? Why?
  • As Diana Prince, she is "mousy". Hello? It's the 21st FRAKKING century!
  • She doesn't wear the costume, she wears a spandex costume. Does this strikes a memory?
  • The script is loaded with Sex and The City-ish stuff. Again Why?
  • Her origin is almost forgetten.
  • She rocks out in her car, plane and office like a teenaged girl.
  • She has a underground team helping her solve crime. GTFOOH!
This is not Wonder Woman. This is 'Birds of Prey' or 'Power Girl'. It feels like David has no sense of Diana at all. He's trying to make her likable to the masses, but here's the thing... We already like her for who she is! Diana is a leader, ambassador, Amazon, fighter and optimist. That's who she is.

And I've noticed that none of the male superheroes had their origins completely ripped up. Maybe some slight changes here and there, but they stuck to the heart and soul of the character. This is a mockery of her!

I hope NBC makes him rewrite this script, because if this is how the series begins it will be canceled within the 1st season.

I am totally turned off by this....

Actually, Kelley's trying to make Wonder Woman more like Clark Kent. Mousy while running a company? I don't think so. That is something guaranteed to make this get canned within the first six episodes by itself.

I think we have all seen over the years that David Kelley basically writes one kind of show over and over again.
Let's admit that the 70s WW show was pretty stupid, but the one saving grace was Lynda Carter's attitude-- she didn't think that WW was campy or laughable. She didn't take herself seriously, but she obviously took the concept of WW seriously. That's why she never looked silly in the WW uniform-- she had respect for WW as a strong female character. Anyone who doesn't get that should not be anywhere near any kind of superhero project, because they produce 'Catwoman' instead of 'Dark Knight'.

@RJ-Yeah, but their may be any number of 6 feet tall men walking around. How many 6'1 mousy women do you know? Being a 6 feet tall woman without high heels it may be hard to pull off the glasses and hair in bun disguise. Gee Whiz.

I agree with you that this wouldn't last long. It's like the Catwoman movie. They name it after a familiar character to capitalize on the name recognition while giving you a completely different character and story.

I figured they would go the spandex route. The rocking out in her car thing sounds like the new Wonder woman in the comics. And she even has her own Scooby Gang. How Buffy! LOL!

You hit the nail on the head!
(I really wanted to read this at work, but internet on myu phone is hella slow.)
That script really sounds ridiculous! Spandex? That's an atrocity. Who would spend all that money for the license of THE MOST RECOGNIZED FEMALE ICON... only to ignore the familiarity.
You are right about how they wouldn't deviate from the Origin of Bats, Supes, Hulk, Iron Man, etc.
And Diana has the BEST origin, with the Tournament.
I hate that team of crime fighter stuff. It's Wonder Woman. She's a One Woman Show!

Let them produce it. It might be fun, but just don't call it Wonder Woman, because that is not what he put on the table.
