These days it seems "star" is synonymous with "media whoring wannabees."

That shocked me when I heard it, she is so far from being a star, it is almost like another continent from my window.

One gets to be a star by being in the right place at the right time,or being related to someone who was, then taking your 15 minutes of fame and selling it as if it was the greatest gift to the human race. At the same time, selling yourself to all the bidders and then continually doing something totally ridiculous one after another, flip-flopping, hating the right people, saying the clever little sound bit.
It isn't easy, really.
So you hire a publicist to keep it all organized for you, and keep that star from falling.
