A decade ago the State of Rhode Island passed legislation that required police to record demographic information for each stop and search they performed. It was call the Traffic Stop Statistics Act (TSSA).

They did this for a fair number of years and each year got pretty much the same results, if you're brown skinned be you African-American or Latino or any mix thereof, you are 4 times more likely to be searched.

And another thing I see quite frequently is cops pulling a pedestrian and invariably they always tend to be Black or Latino. So they're still profiling even here in Providence.

It goes to the old saying, never judge a book by its cover. This is why I say, get the cops out of the cruisers and on foot. In Providence it makes sense since the city is so compact.

When cops know the people in their area, they tend to get better info to act on.

As to ending stop & frisk - it's going to take a hell of a lot of effort to make it happen.
