6 Things We Gotta Stop doing when it comes to Russia

As I said before this whole Russia madness has drained me. It just feels like we're being overly manic about all of this anti-gay-Russia-killing-folks-Olympians. While I wholeheartedly believe Russia is so wrong, I'm not naive about this.

However, it seems a lot of folks are, especially some of my fellow gays. So, as we continue our "Attack Drago" approach, here are some things I want us to stop doing.

1. Stop doing mindless and pointless boycotts. The vodka thing is not making a difference, regardless of what some folks say. Stoli ain't not hurting for money. Remember Chik-Fil-A? That backfired and we were left with egg on our faces. Not a good look.
2. Stop trying 'Westernize' their world. We're naive to think the tactics we used to get our rights works everywhere. I have read so many blogs that talks about how Gays Russians should chain themselves to Putin's fence or lobby their politicians. Folks, it's Russia. They don't do activism American Style. 
3. Stop acting surprised about Russia's politics. When have they ever been soft? 
4. Let's not make up the stories. A lot of bloggers are rewriting the real stories. For example, if the IOC said they will work with Russia's officials, don't turn around and say the IOC support the imprisonment of Gays. In fact, stick to the facts. Don't jazz up your blog posts or articles with fibs, lies and half-truths. Have integrity and keep it real.
5. Stop making Russia the ultimate Axis of Evil. Yes, their anti-gay law is horrid, but it doesn't make their entire country evil. Hell, if that's the case... We should be the Axis of Evil too. I mean, we just got rid of DOMA, DADT, we have a bunch of states that outlaw gay marriage, and we can lose our jobs because of our sexualities. To be honest, we are no better than Russia. 
6. Stop pushing for things that won't happen. They won't cancel the Winter Games or move it. So let's stop the petitions and letters. Let's just support the Russian LGBT activists and their efforts.

Again, I hate Russia's anti-gay law, we all do. But we shouldn't overreact, we should think clearly about the how to approach all of this. The misinformation, the fibs, and unconfirmed stories are a bit much and overboard. We have to be better.

The UC Davis Cop has a Checkered Past

Lt. John Pike is the name of the cop who pepper sprayed the students at UC Davis. And since this pic hit the news, John's past is coming out:

He has twice been honored by the university for exceptional police work, including a 2006 incident in which he tackled a scissor-wielding hospital patient who was threatening fellow officers. Afterward, he said he decided against using pepper spray because it might harm his colleagues or other hospital patients.

But an alleged anti-gay slur by Pike also figured in a racial and sexual discrimination lawsuit a former police officer filed against the department, which ended in a $240,000 settlement in 2008. Officer Calvin Chang's 2003 discrimination complaint against the university's police chief and the UC Board of Regents alleged he was systematically marginalized as the result of anti-gay and racist attitudes on the force, and he specifically claimed Pike described him using a profane anti-gay epithet.

The activist group Anonymous have posted  John's personal info on their site and his pic above is being used for blogs and T-shirts.

Right now, John is on paid leave from his duties.

OWS Protesters are NOT leaving the park

Mayor Bloomberg wants the protesters to leave the park, but they are not going.

Protesters will resist any efforts to remove them from the Lower Manhattan park where they have been camped for nearly a month, despite Mayor Michael Bloomberg's order that they vacate the park at 7 a.m. Friday so it can be cleaned, an organizer said Thursday.


"Come tomorrow morning, we will passively resist and make it as difficult a process to remove us as possible," said Occupy Wall Street spokesman Tyler Combelic. "It's not an occupation if you can't occupy the park."

His words appeared to be backed up by the sentiment of the crowd of more than 1,000 protesters who filled Zuccotti Park Thursday night. "All day! All week! Occupy Wall Street!" they chanted.
Combelic called the mayor's announcement a "not-so-veiled attempt" to force protesters from the park, setting up a possible confrontation with authorities.

Protesters descended on the privately owned park near the New York Stock Exchange on September 17 to protest the nation's ailing economy.

"You want to clean up something? Clean up these crooks on Wall Street," said City Council Member Charles Barron.

This is a revolution, y'all.

Members of the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality protested in the court house the other day. They wanted the county clerk issue marriage licenses for gay couples.

My plea to the LGBT Protests in Los Angeles... Let's change it up, please!

The Prop 8 stay has inspired another protest tomorrow in WeHo. But to be honest, I'm tired of these protests.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe in them and I'm very supportive of fighting for our rights, but the way it's done in Los Angeles is getting old. Let me share my reasons:

• We ALWAYS protest in WeHo. It's the gay mecca of L.A., so basically we are preaching to the choir.
• For some reason they love to start at 6pm. Hello, 6pm in L.A.? It's rush hour or better yet rush hours. Traffic in L.A. starts at 4pm and slows down at 7 or 8pm. And if you live in South Central, East L.A. or in Venice, you will need to leave work or where ever early to make it. And parking SUX in WeHo.
• At these protests, there are no set plans. You are just standing there with 100s of other angry people. Maybe someone will speak; but after driving for 40 minutes and spending 20 more minutes looking for parking, you just want a little more structure.
• L.A. is a huge city. I think to only stay in WeHo is too safe. This is a protest, we need to really take it to the streets for real. No one takes us serious if we are shouting in our own backyard.
• Also it sends a message that WeHo is only place that matters.
  

So how do we change this? Well, you know me, I always have solutions.

• We should be in many parts of the city as possible. Our anger or frustration should be expressed in ALL of L.A.
  
• We should be somewhat sensitive with time. Starting at 6pm works on the weekend, but I think 8pm is a better time. I believe more folks would come out and support.
• Have a plan. There should be next steps and strategies developed at these events. We have a captive audience, let's take advantage of that.
• Make sure the protest actually makes sense. Tomorrow's protest is nothing more but a bitchfest, let's not waste time. Let's make something happen.

As I said before, I love a good protest. But it's time to change the game. We need to take our issues to the STREETS. Hell, the civil rights movement went everywhere. They didn't just stay in the Black neighborhoods, they took it to the white neighborhoods, sock hops and schools.

It's time to follow suit.

2 Men Rush the Citi Field in Protest of SB 1070 during an Arizona Diamondback Game

This is getting good... This weekend 2 guys put all on the line by protesting the racist immigration law.

Two men carrying Mexican flags ran into the outfield during the seventh inning of the New York Mets' game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Citi Field.

The men were apprehended by security fairly quickly without much incident.

Before the game, about 40 demonstrators across the street from the ballpark protested Arizona's immigration law, chanting "Oppose racism!" and "Boycott Arizona!"

Others stationed closer to the subway exit handed out leaflets that requested Major League Baseball move next year's All-Star game out of Phoenix.
