Sam Smith and the Oscar Gaffe heard around the World

Last night, Sam Smith won an Oscar for the his song that James Bond movie. In his acceptance speech, he said:
"I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar. If this is the case—even if it isn't the case—I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world."
Um, okay, Sam... However, you wasn't the first. There was Melissa Etheridge, Elton John, Stephen Sondheim. And that's just in the same catagory. Classical composer John Corigliano, songwriter Howard Ashman, Sir John Gielgud... Bill Condon won for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1999, Alan Ball won Best Original Screenplay for American Beauty, and Pedro Almodóvar won Best Original Screenplay for Talk To Her. And then, Dustin Lance Black who won for Milk and even talked about being gay in his speech.

So, no, Sam's not the first. It was a simple mistake... A mistake riddled in privilege and twinkism, but hey. I didn't expect Sam to be a wealth of LGBT knowledge, but if you have a chance to win an Oscar, you should be better prepared. And he wasn't, not only for that, but the backlash. Sam was dragged for that statement. He came off like a true gay millennial, only aware of the now. Then Dustin sent out this tweet.

Wow! Anywho, it was a mistake, a gaffe that I hope Sam learned from. He's young, so he will be forgiven. However, he needs to brush up on his LGBT history if he's going to play the spokesperson.

Dustin Lance Black and Gus Van Sant are bringing a Gay Miniseries to ABC

ABC ordered a gay-rights miniseries called, “When We Rise” from Dustin Lance Black and Gus Van Sant.

This miniseries will feature stories of LGBT folks throughout the gay civil rights movement. The series will focus on the Stonewall riots to now.

Here's my issue... the series description claims that it will show "setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today."

Okay, but will it be diverse?

Will we see people of color featured in these stories? And not interracial stuff, I mean couples of color. Those stories are RARELY seen in any major LGBT TV/Film project. Will we see diverse faces, or just another Ryan Murphy-ish cast?

I hoping for the best, but I'm not holding my breath.

WATCH the Gaytastic Coca-Cola Short Film “The Text”

Academy Award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black created a great short called “El SMS (The Text).” This short is part of Coca-Cola’s True Friendship campaign and it's lovely.

Here's the synopsis

The campaign, by Pereira O’Dell, focuses on various different scenarios which question what makes a true friend (#VerdaderoAmigo). In this eight-minute film, a group of teen boys joke and tease each other in the usual high school way about girls, video games and such-like. Two of the boys are especially close buddies, but Rafael is hiding something from his friend Diego– he’s gay. When he leaves his phone unattended, Diego reads a text that surprises him. His decision to cover for his friend, and accept him for who he is, is what cements this true friendship. And, as Rafael points out, gay guys know all the pretty girls.

Interesting Quote: Tom Daley on Dustin Lance Black

"It really was love at first sight, I'd never felt like anything like it before. We were at a party and I hadn't even spoken to him all night. I didn't know what to do or if he was gay at first. I made the first move, I typed 'call me' in his notes with a smiley face on this phone and the next day he texted. He makes me feel safe and happy, right now I couldn't be happier. I'd never felt the feeling of love, it happened so quickly, I was completely overwhelmed by it to the point I can't get him out of my head all the time. I've never had it before where I love someone and they love me just as much."

Interesting Quote: Dustin Lance Black

"For my very first post I’d hoped to keep it light and talk about how my new swimming pool isn’t coming along at the rate I’d hoped (fingers crossed for summer 2012). Instead, more than a few friends and co-workers pointed me to a recent GQ interview with Taylor Lautner and I felt I had to respond. Evidently the GQ writer asked whether director Gus Van Sant and writer Dustin Lance Black made a pass at him when the three dined together in Los Angeles recently. Really Mr. GQ writer? I’m curious, will you be asking all of the handsome actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with or meeting if I made passes at them as well? I’d love to be there when you ask Sean Penn that same question. Or, Mr. GQ writer, were you projecting your own unprofessional desires onto me and Gus? Perhaps? Or worse still, are you a homophobe? Above and beyond this clear attack on my character, I’m shocked that GQ would allow their writer to lean on the scurrilous, outdated stereotype that gay men are by nature sexual predators. I mean, would you have asked this same question if it were Diablo Cody and Kathryn Bigelow at dinner with Mr. Lautner? Leaning on lies, myths and stereotypes about gay people is hateful, harmful and outdated. It’s not the 1950s anymore GQ, it’s 2011 and it’s time to grow up."
Dustin's calling out GQ for their foolishness.

Leave Dustin Lance Black Alone!

So Dustin Lance Black had sex and took picture of it, who hasn't? (me)

Okay, maybe not all of us, but he did and that's his business. But what's bothering me is the person who released them and the folks trying to profit on the pics.

It's sad that folks deliberately set out to hurt you or to cause strife in your life. The person who released these pics must really hate Dustin to do this. I hope it wasn't the ex, that's petty and cheap. Also it continues to stir the whole "bitter queen" pot.

It's like they want to see him fail or to suffer. I believe that Dustin is on a great path for the LGBT community. I hope this pics don't set him back muddle his career. He has a lot to offer and I wish him well through this mess. Stay strong.
