Don Lemon: trump needs an elementary education

The Daily Beast reports:

“This is a sad moment for the country,” Lemon said. “I think it was an awful moment for the person who is supposed to represent the highest office of the land. There, today, you saw the real Donald Trump proving all of his critics right in that moment.” 

“There is a difference between the two groups,” Lemon added. “One is a Nazi, white supremacist group. What they want to do is extinguish people that look like me and you, Wolf, Jewish people, black people, even women. They don't think we are equal to them. The other is a protest group, protesting a political and racist movement.” 

Lemon said Trump “doesn't seem to be very aware of the history of this country,” reminding the president that these problems began with slavery. “People who look like me did not come over on the Nina, the Pinta, or the Santa Maria. And those people who were there want to keep people like me enslaved.”

In an article in Jezebel, Don Lemon shared some things. However, when asked: Do you have any idea what you would be doing if you weren’t a journalist?
He said:

I’d probably be a writer like James Baldwin. Or I would probably be an activist. But not like Dr. King, even though I admire him. I’d probably be more of a Malcolm X. I believe the best way to improve yourself is to improve yourself.

Don Lemon listed as one of the Worst Journalist of 2014

Oh, Don Lemon...

Columbia Journalism Review fellow's list named him the "worst journalism" of 2014.

THR reports:

The anchor has made headlines throughout the year for controversial moments during his tenure as a CNN newsroom anchor.

In a post written by David Uberti, the CJR fellow makes a case for why Lemon deserves to be ranked along with other missteps in journalism over the past year.

"As one of the most recognizable anchors on CNN, Don Lemon has helped lead the cable network’s coverage of the biggest stories of the year. Live television is exceedingly difficult to produce, of course, but Lemon’s gaffes this year offer a case study in how to choose words wisely — or not," Uberti wrote.

Lemon's comment that "Obviously, there's a smell of marijuana" during a Ferguson protest and his remarks during an interview with a Bill Cosby accuser were cited as controversial moments by Uberti. The CNN wasn't alone in the cable news world on the CJR worst list, Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends also made Uberti's list.

Also included on the list was Rolling Stone magazine, which acknowledged serious missteps in its feature report on an alleged University of Virginia campus rape. "The disintegration of the magazine’s visceral campus rape story from Nov. 19 wins this year’s media-fail sweepstakes," Uberti wrote.

On Dec. 22, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner wrote in a statement that the magazine had asked Columbia Journalism School, which publishes CJR, to review the edit process of the feature.

I see his point, I don't completely agree on the style of his message... But I get it.

5 Things the Black Community should always Think About

Okay, Don Lemon stepped it. He said some things that many people weren't happy with. And while folks were highly upset and jumping on Twitter with silly hashtags, it really didn't change a thing. Don Lemon still stands firm with his beliefs.

But let's move on from him and get into the facts... We have issues in the Black community. Regardless of what we think or feel, there are still issues we need address. So, I thought I would create my list of 5 things we should be thinking about as a community (I also added facts/links to these issues):

Black Women and Obesity
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), almost 60 percent of Black women are obese, the highest of all other groups of women. This matter is lowering life expectancy of Black Women and increasing their chances of developing a myriad of health problems like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and arthritis.

Incarceration
The Incarceration rate for Black people now six times the national average. In fact, it's so high that Black men with no high school diploma are more likely to go to jail than to find a job.

HIV
The latest CDC estimates show that Black people account for almost half of all new infections in the country each year (44 percent), as well as, almost half of all people living with HIV (44 percent). And Black men account for 70 percent of new HIV infections. Black Women account for 30 percent.

Living
Black people still die almost four years earlier than White people. According the the study, a lot has to do with health and a lack of education.

Gay Youth
According to a survey conducted by the National Strategy for Black Gay Youth in America, 43% of Black gay teens have contemplated or attempted suicide due to issues related to their sexuality.

While there are other matters to discuss, I thought these issues would be a great place to start.

Don's commitments on race and the Black community caused some issues last night.

Interesting... I see what he was trying to say, but using Bill O'Reilly as a jump off wasn't the best plan. Yes, there are issues within our community, but his 5-point rule isn't a way to address the issues.
