Darren Wilson speaks Out

There is an interesting article in The New Yorker about Darren Wilson, the former cop who killed Mike Brown in Ferguson last year. In this piece, Wilson talks about life after the shooting and how he's coping with it all. Here's a few snippets:

• Although Wilson recently bought the house, his name is not on the deed, and only a few friends know where he lives. He and his wife, Barb, who is thirty-seven, and also a former Ferguson cop, rarely linger in the front yard. Because of such precautions, Wilson has been leading a very quiet life. During the past year, a series of police killings of African-Americans across the country has inspired grief, outrage, protest, and acrimonious debate. For many Americans, this discussion, though painful, has been essential. Wilson has tried, with some success, to block it out.

• In The American Thinker, David Whitley wrote that Wilson “should be thanked and treated as a hero!” Supporters raised nearly half a million dollars on behalf of the Wilsons, allowing them to move, buy the new house, and pay their legal expenses. But, as Wilson knows, such support has only deepened the resentment of people who feel that he deserves punishment or, at the very least, reprimand.

• Wilson, a former Boy Scout with round cheeks and blue eyes, speaks with a muted drawl. When Barb went to the hospital to give birth, he said, “I made her check in anonymously.” Wilson said that he had interviewed for a few police positions but had been told that he would be a liability. “It’s too hot an issue, so it makes me unemployable,” he said. He tried not to brood about it: “I bottle everything up.”

There more, however, I wasn't a fan of this 'feel for him' story. Check it out and tell me what you think.

In Ferguson: Two Cops were Shot

In a different twist, two police officers were shot in Ferguson last night.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports:

The shots were fired as police were confronting protesters who had gathered outside the police station.

Ferguson Lt. Col. Al Eickhoff said he didn't think either of the officers were from his department. He also didn't know the extent of their injuries. Eickhoff was not at the scene at the time of the shooting but he said he was headed there.

A police source said one of the officers is a St. Louis County officer and the other a Webster Groves officer. The source said both officers are expected to survive. The officers were taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where there was a large number of police vehicles.

The shots rang out as the protests appeared to be dwindling. Some of the protesters fell to the ground and others ran.

Several members of the media, including a Post-Dispatch reporter and photographer, were near the officers who were hit.

The shots appeared to come from the direction of a block of homes on Tiffin Avenue that intersects West Florissant Avenue, where the police department is located. Witnesses reported two to four shots.

I bet you that Obama and Holder will be blamed for this.

The Family of Michael Brown will Sue Darren Wilson

Anthony Gray, attorney for the family of Michael Brown, announced that they will file a civil case against former police officer Darren Wilson. The city of Ferguson will also be named in the suit as well.

The Root reports

The family’s legal team underscored the difference in the standard of proof between a federal civil rights suit and a personal civil suit, suggesting that it might be able to succeed in its case.

Another lawyer on the family’s team, Daryl Parks, said that Brown’s family does “not accept” that Wilson was defending himself when he shot Brown to death in August.

Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch is being sued over the Michael Brown Case

This is about to get interesting.

A member of the grand jury is suing Robert McCulloch for mishandling the grand jury process. Interesting, to say the least.

HuffPo reports:

The still-anonymous grand juror, referred to only as "Grand Juror Doe" in the lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri, believes that his or her voice "could contribute to the current public dialogue concerning race relations" in the country. The grand juror believes that the Wilson case was handled much differently than the hundreds of other cases presented to the grand jury before the Wilson case.

"From Plaintiff's perspective, the presentation of evidence to the grand jury investigating Wilson differed markedly and in significant ways from how evidence was presented in the hundreds of matters presented to the grand jury earlier in its term," the lawsuit stated. The grand juror believes that the portrayal of the case in the media has not been accurate.

"In Plaintiff's view, the current information available about the grand jurors' views is not entirely accurate -- especially the implication that all grand jurors believed that there was no support for any charges," the lawsuit stated. "Moreover, the public characterization of the grand jurors' view of witnesses and evidence does not accord with Plaintiff's own."

The ACLU said the "life-time gag order" against grand jurors in the case is not fair in the Wilson case because of the extraordinary publicity Brown's death received and the strange way the case was presented.

I am hoping this moves into a new trial. Robert and Darren should be held accountable.

In Glendale: Retired Cop's Party Mocks the Death of Michael Brown

This happened earlier this week and I'm floored!

At the Elks Lodge in Glendale (which is 7 miles from me) a retired LAPD officer named Joe Myersa held golf charity event. It was a typical event until Gary Fishell, a former federal investigator, sung a song about Michael Brown.

The lyrics are

“Michael Brown learned a lesson about a messin’
With a badass policeman
And he’s bad, bad Michael Brown
Baddest thug in the whole damn town
Badder than old King Kong
Meaner than a junkyard dog.

Two men took to fightin’
And Michael punched in through the door
And Michael looked like some old Swiss cheese
His brain was splattered on the floor

And he’s dead, dead Michael Brown
Deadest man in the whole damn town
His whole life’s long gone
Deader than a roadkill dog.”

TMZ has the video of this mess. The scary part about this whole thing was at least 60 of the guess were cops.

TMZ reports:

Singer Gary Fishell is a P.I. who once worked as an investigator for the Federal Government. His lawyer tells TMZ, Fishell now realizes the song was "off color and in poor taste." The lawyer adds, "He's a goofball who writes funny songs." We asked why Fishell would sing this in a room full of cops, and the lawyer replied, "He thought the room would get a kick out of it."

Joe Myers tells TMZ, "How can I dictate what he [Fishell] says in a song?" Myers goes on, "This is America. We can say what we want. This is a free America." Myers adds ... he's done this as an annual event for decades and has raised a lot of money for charity.

Someone who was at the event videotaped it because they were offended by the song and upset no one was objecting.

A trustee for the Lodge tells TMZ, the dinner was not an Elks Club event ... it was a golf tournament run by Myers and since he was a member he had a right to hold a dinner there.

The trustee tells TMZ many of the hundreds of members of the Glendale Elks Lodge are upset about the song, saying, "It's deplorable and inappropriate and the Lodge will take disciplinary action against [Fishell] and possibly the people who organized this event."

The trustee added, "We don't stand for any racist things like this."

HRC releases a Statement on the Grand Jury's Decision on the Michael Brown Case

HRC released the following statement from HRC President Chad Griffin:

“Michael Brown’s family and the American people deserve to have this case fully adjudicated in a public trial. Today’s deeply disappointing decision by the grand jury denies them that opportunity. Until we as a nation make a meaningful commitment to ending police profiling—and to fully prosecuting individual cases of brutality—the kind of violence that ended Michael Brown’s life will only continue. As advocates for equality, it’s our job to show solidarity with a growing national movement to break this cycle of police violence.”

“While we cannot begin to imagine the pain that the Brown family is facing at this moment, we send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to them during this heartbreaking and difficult time. We also stand in solidarity with the family's encouragement of peaceful protests and reflection following this decision.”

In August, HRC joined dozens of prominent national and local LGBT and other civil rights organizations in an open letter of solidarity with the family of Michael Brown. A portion of that letter is included below:

“The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community cannot be silent at this moment, because LGBT people come from all races, creeds, faiths and backgrounds, and because all movements of equality are deeply connected. We are all part of the fabric of this nation and the promise of liberty and justice for all is yet to be fulfilled.”

All Eyes on Ferguson

The decision from the Grand Jury could come out today or this week. The amount of tension is palpable in that town, so much is at stake... So much.

I hope the right thing is done... I hope Darren Wilson is found guilty. The info from him and the Ferguson PD are not adding up.

The truth has to come out and shine bright.

Somebody's lying!

The Aug. 9 fatal shooting here that sparked three months of protests and calls for change from around the world happened in less than 90 seconds, interviews and an analysis of police and EMS records shows.

The records, obtained by the Post-Dispatch via Missouri’s Sunshine Law, provide the best timeline yet for the events surrounding the shooting of Michael Brown Jr., 18. Also released were police station surveillance videos that provide the most recent images of Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson, who has stayed out of the public eye since the shooting. Wilson left the police station for the hospital two hours after the shooting, accompanied by other officers and his union lawyer.

Leaks in the Michael Brown Case are causing a Huge Stir

Last week, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch posted an article about Michael Brown's leaked autopsy report. In the article, it quotes California forensics expert Dr. Judy Melinek, claiming that Michael Brown was reaching for Darren Wilson's gun. Several news outlets covered it, even though, it’s considered propaganda. Later, the article was found inaccurate because of the way it written.

Dr. Melinek clarified that she never said the autopsy supported Darren Wilson's story. She also discussed this matter on her blog and on MSNBC. The info quickly spread on Twitter and Facebook, labeling St. Louis Post-Dispatch as instigators and liars. And apparently, this unnecessary drama didn’t sit well with AG Eric Holder.

At a news event in Los Angeles, Eric spoke about this leaked story and expressed that he was bothered by it. In fact, he said that he was "exasperated" to see leaks.

It’s clearly an attempt to change the public opinion about Darren. However, it has only created more questions on the story and who’s leaking the information.

Hopefully, this type of action and mess will force Eric and the DOJ to take the case. It doesn’t seem to be in good hands down in that area.

Demonstrators interrupt STL symphony singing a 'Requiem for Michael Brown'

This was amazing!

Just after intermission, about 50 people interrupted the St. Louis Symphony’s performance of Brahms Requiem on Saturday night, singing “Justice for Mike Brown.”

As symphony conductor Markus Stenz raised his baton to begin the second act of German Requiem, one middle-aged African-American man stood up in the middle of the theater and sang, “What side are you on friend, what side are you on?”

In an operatic voice, another woman located a few rows away stood up and joined him singing, “Justice for Mike Brown is justice for us all.” Several more audience members sprinkled throughout the theater and in the balcony rose up and joined in the singing.

Those in the balcony lowered white banners about 15 feet long with black spray-painted letters that said, “ Requiem for Mike Brown 1996-2014” and “Racism lives here,” with an arrow pointed to a picture of the St. Louis Arch. Another banner said, “Rise up and join the movement.”

Stenz stood stoically and listened to the demonstrators’ performance. Some onlookers were outraged and start spewing expletives. Others stood up and started clapping. Most seemed stunned and simply watched.

The singing only went on for two minutes before the demonstrators started chanting, “Black lives matter.” Then they all marched out together and left the theater. While they marched out, they received a round of applause from almost all of the audience members – as well as the musicians on stage.

Outside, symphony administrators huddled together discussing the demonstration. When asked if they wanted to comment, they said no.
