My List of the Top Black Heroines in Comics

The number of Black Super Heroes are growing. New and exciting stories that include Black comic book characters are becoming the norm, but sadly, our Black super heroines are still few and far between.

So I wanted to take this time to recognize some of my favorite Black Super Women after the jump

Bumblebee
Karen Beecher is DC Comics first Black super woman. She smart, fun, and packs a huge punch for a small size heroine.

Spectrum
Monica Rambeau has had many names in the Marvel Universe, but she still maintains a powerful player in the comics. Did you know that she once led the Avengers? How cool is that?

Martha Washington
In the Dark Horse Comics mini-series, Martha is a freedom fighter who fought against the system. She is an interesting character, who I quickly fell in love with back in the day. If you get the chance, read Give Me Liberty, trust me, it's good.

Michonne
You can't have The Walking Dead, without Michonne. She is a complex character that (in my opinion) gives the story a much needed boost. She is the reason why I read the comic and watch the show.

Misty Knight
Misty is an old school Marvel member who debuted in 1975. As a no nonsense detective with superb marital arts skills, Misty is great character to follow. She has interacted in most of the Marvel comics for the past 30-something years. Hopefully, we will see her in the Marvel Netflix series.

I have a special spot in my heart for Nubia. She is Wonder Woman's twin sister and leader of her own floating island... Well, in the old DC Universe. She came back in the late 90s as a different character and a few years ago, she appeared as alternative WW in a different universe. I still hope she will come back as Diana's lost sister... And yes, I will hold my breath.

Storm
She is the icon, Marvel's first Black Super Heroine. Ororo has been a strong character in the Marvel Universe for years. We have learned so much from her. Through the hair cuts, costume changes, loves, leadership, and marriage, Ororo still remains true to herself and an inspiration to comic book fans.

Mari is another interesting character in the DC universe. Since her debut in 1981, Vixen has been a member of the Justice League and Suicide Squad. Her powers are based from the totem she wears around her neck. Through this totem, she can mimic any animal on Earth. Also, did you know she was close to being the first Black female to have her own comic book in 1978? Yes, Vixen almost made history, but sadly the idea was nixed.
