Jason Collins announces his Retirement from NBA

Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay Basketball player in the country, is retiring from the NBA.

Jason has played for 13 years in the NBA, he writes:

Among the memories I will cherish most are the warm applause I received in Los Angeles when I took the court in my Nets debut, and the standing ovation I got at my first home game in Brooklyn. It shows how far we’ve come. The most poignant moment came at my third game, in Denver, where I met the family of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student beaten to death in a 1998 hate crime on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyo. For the past two years I have worn number 98 on my jersey to honor his memory. I was humbled to learn that number 98 jerseys became the top seller at NBAStore.com. Proceeds from sales, and from auctioned jerseys I wore in games, were donated to two gay-rights charities.

There are still no publicly gay players in the NFL, NHL or major league baseball. Believe me: They exist. Every pro sport has them. I know some of them personally. When we get to the point where a gay pro athlete is no longer forced to live in fear that he’ll be shunned by teammates or outed by tabloids, when we get to the point where he plays while his significant other waits in the family room, when we get to the point where he’s not compelled to hide his true self and is able to live an authentic life, then coming out won’t be such a big deal. But we’re not there yet.

He will be missed.

Interesting Quote: Jason Collins

"I used to be able to jump and touch the top of the white square behind the rim with ease. As the years go by, you watch your hand go lower and lower on that square. Father Time is undefeated against us all. ... I'm really grateful for my Stanford degree now. On the other hand, I can still dunk."
Sounds like he uncertain about his future.

Jason Collins hits the Courts, Making History

Jason said this about the game:
"I know that I can play in the NBA and it felt good to be out there tonight. Conditioning-wise, I felt good. I don't think I got tired. It was a lot of fun to get back out on the court and set screens, hard fouls. Didn't take any charges tonight — that'll change. I'll get in position next time. As far as basketball timing, it's going to take at least a couple of practices."
This is so good.

GQ named Jason Collins Game Changer of the Year 2013

In their Men of the Year edition, Jason was named Game Changer of the Year.

Jason says:
“I do identify myself as a black man before I identify myself as a gay man. It was also important for me to put my age and the length of my playing career before the fact that I'm gay. Twelve years is a long time in any professional sport. I felt that that longevity speaks to something—and to the fact that I've earned a right to speak.”

Lord, new mess to talk about.

Asante was talking from the side of his neck on Fox News Radio. This fool said:
"Straight people are not announcing they're straight, so why does everybody have to announce their sexuality or whatever? You know, what they prefer...So that's just how I see it. That's my opinion on things. All respect you know, I have nothing but respect for the people whoever decisions they make and whatever, but you know, you don't have to show it and flaunt it like that. You know what I'm saying, we have kids out here, too."

Asante, I don't think stupid folks should flaunt their lifestyle, but that hasn't stop you at all.

Jason Collins' Jersey makes Record Sales

Folks are coming out to support Jason Collins! In fact, his jersey got a huge boost of sales!

From ABC News:
Washington Wizards center Jason Collins’ jerseys got a boost in online sales after he became the first openly gay athlete on a major U.S. team sport.
Team spokesman Scott Hall told ABC News that 100 percent of custom jerseys ordered from the team’s online store bore Collins’ name and number, 98, on the back, after Collins revealed his homosexuality in an article published on Sports Illustrated’s website on Monday.
Another reason why his jersey is so special has to do with the number 98. That number represents the year Matthew Shepard was murdered. Jason mentioned that was a significant moment for him.
