How I would create the Vampire Mythos... If I had to

Since there are like 10 vampire movies coming out this year and next, I wondered... Could I tell a vampire tale?

And would I want too? Actually no, I'm not a vampire fan (even though I like Buffy, Vamp, Fright Night and True Blood). However, if I was given 7 figures, I could come up with an origin story of vampires.

Cue in the bullet point outline....

• I would create a vampire mythos that makes them the last beings roaming the earth before Adam and Eve. Those beings are the children of the FIRST and forgotten couple, Lilith and Saulham. 
• Lilith and Saulham's betrayed their Gods to believe in only one God. Those Gods cursed Lilith and Saulham's children by turning them into deformed and monstrous things that could only roam the night and feed on the dead.
• These cursed beings stayed hidden for many centuries, until they were discovered by a mad African king, Seb.
•  Through his wizards' magic, Seb forced these beings to conquer villages and kingdoms in his name.
• Seb used sex and sorcery to breed these demons with his women prisoners and slaves. The women gave birth to many of these hybrid babies. All of them had cold ivory skin. None of the women survive, some of the babies died.
• One of the wizards, Fa'koe, took the surviving brood and raised them. They became adults in several months.
• They have special powers, making them noble and treated as blessed beings.
• With the help of the brood, Fa'koe overthrows Seb and becomes the new king. However, it was short-lived. One of the brood, a woman, killed Fa'koe and took his mystical powers.
• The brood attacked Seb/Fa'koe's kingdom. The ones that survived were turned into beings just like the brood through their enchanted blood.
• The brood woman, Ankysh, formed a new kingdom of demons that fed from the blood of their enemies in the night and hid from the sun.
• They traveled many places, forming kingdoms in Africa, Egypt, India and Asia.
• Some of the brood died, while a new generation lived on through the blood of others.
• In another 1,000 years, the brood are named Vampires.

That's my take. This is what happens at the last hour at work for me.

Teen Vampire Arrested in Texas

This is some morning news for you. Lyle Bensley used his vampiric powers to break-in someone's house and to eat. And when he was caught, he warned the cops that he was, well, hungry:

"He was begging us to restrain him because he didn't want to kill us," Galveston Officer Daniel Erickson said. "He said he needed to feed."

Lyle Monroe Bensley, 19, of Galveston, is being held on a charge of burglary with intent to commit assault after forcing his way early Saturday into the apartment of a woman he did not know, police spokesman Capt. Jeff Heyse said.

Bensley, covered with tattoos and wearing only boxer shorts, forced his way into the apartment on Seawall Boulevard and made his way into the bedroom of a woman whose name has not been released, Heyse said.

Bensley made growling and hissing noises while biting and hitting the woman in her bed, Heyse said. Bensley then dragged her out of the apartment and she broke free.

She ran into the parking lot where she got into a car driven by a neighbor. Bensley beat on the car before it sped away, Heyse said.

Police received a call at 6:50 a.m. Erickson said he and another officer were in the woman's apartment when they heard shrieking and growling sounds and saw Bensley in the parking lot. They arrested him after a short chase. 

"I'm a vampire, and I've been alive for over 500 years," Bensley said, according to Erickson.

Bill Condon's Open Letter to Twilight Fans

Dreamgirls' Guru, Bill Condon is the director of the Twilight's next movie, Breaking Dawn. And he is making sure fans will get to know him and trust him with their prized possession.

He just wrote a letter to them via Facebook:

Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I'm stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you've probably heard, I've been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit - who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

I'm pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I've read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine's and Chris's movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine's notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz's companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk - a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for "newborn" status in the universe you've been living inside for a few years now, but a guy's gotta start somewhere.

Like many of you, I've always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn't been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I've been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.

The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don't think it's difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy - and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.

I'm a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?

No on Daybreakers

I just saw Daybreakers and I want my money back!

This flick had an interesting trailer, great ads and presented some promise. However, this was 2 hours of mess.

The movie's about the world being all vamperized and humans are the food chain. Ethan Hawke's character works on making a cure to turn the vampires back into human. Basically, I felt like I was watching I Am Legend 2. In fact, it should've been the sequel.

The scenes were boring and predictable. The vamps were nothing exciting and I fell asleep twice. It was that boring, y'all.

Daybreakers just ended my affair with vampires. Only True Blood and Buffy will keep any love I have for vampers alive.

So I recommend that you do NOT see Daybreakers. Save your money, or send it to me.

The REAL sequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula

Bram's great-grandnephew, Dacre and a Dracula historian, Ian Holt, has created the official Dracula sequel, Dracula: The Un-Dead.

This is considered as the real deal part 2 from the Stoker estate. The idea is fascinating and exciting.

The book comes out on October 13th. Here's the background scoop:

Dracula The Un-Dead begins in 1912, twenty-five years after Dracula "crumbled into dust." Van Helsing's protégé, Dr. Jack Seward, is now a disgraced morphine addict obsessed with stamping out evil across Europe. Meanwhile, an unknowing Quincey Harker, the grown son of Jonathan and Mina, leaves law school for the London stage, only to stumble upon the troubled production of "Dracula," directed and produced by Bram Stoker himself.

The play plunges Quincey into the world of his parents' terrible secrets, but before he can confront them he experiences evil in a way he had never imagined.
