Here's Why Fox canceled Firefly

Firefly was one of the greatest series out there, but Fox (curse them) canceled it, even though they screwed up the order of the episodes. Luckily, the movie cleared up some stuff.

But now, I learned the real reason why this show was canceled. Former Fox Entertainment president Gail Berman explains the reason(s)

"Canceling 'Firefly' was as difficult as anything I'd ever been involved in because Joss and I had been creative partners at one time," she said. Indeed, I remember seeing Berman sitting with a script and headphones on the set of a season two episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." "I worked with him very closely on this particular show and when it didn't perform [in the ratings], having to cancel it was very difficult."

When Fox aired "Firefly," the network chose to air episodes out of order, presumably in an effort to put forward what executives considered the better episodes first. Of course, that decision wrecked Whedon's attempts at character development and also screwed with the show's continuity. I asked Berman if she thought changing the episode order hurt the show and if she'd do it different if she had to do it again.

"If I had to do it over again, I might have reconsidered it but I'm not sure it would have changed anything," she said. "It was a numbers things. It was a wonderful show and I loved it and I loved working with him on it but that was a big show, a very expensive show and it wasn't delivering the numbers."
So there it is. Still not happy about it, but what can you do... Oh, wait. I can watch the episode when Mal was naked. Good times.

When you look at the cast, you can already see the fleshed out characters. What Joss did in 14 episodes, most series take 2-3 seasons to do. Grrr.

Naked Mal...yum.

Yeah, I saw an episode on SciFi this weekend and you could totally tell it was a rebroadcast from FOX rather than it simply be aired from the DVD, and it was very strange. The opening had this narrative voiceover from Book, and I was like...that's totally unnecessary if you watch it the way it's intended to be watched. :)

Another show I'm rather pissed about is Defying Gravity. Never did find out what the beta objects were damn it.

Naked Mal, his butt was wide and rather jiggly......good times, good times. I had a crush on Alan Tudyk(sp) so mad at the movie for his future. Sigh. But now I am off to refresh my memory at Netflix and watch Mal bootie! Thanks for the memories!!!

I think this show was way ahead of its time in terms of what we now have to come to accept as a show. Can you imagine showing Lost, or even Desperate Housewives in the wrong order? Had this been made about three years later, it would have worked.
