Civil Rights Champion Julian Bond has Died
We lost a hero, a fighter, a believer...
Civil Rights leader Julian Bond has died.
Julian has always been been a fighter.
As a student at Morehouse College, he co-founded Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee that organized protests during the civil right movement. Later in life, he served as the board chairman of the NAACP for 10 years. In this role, Julian spoke out against homophobia and strongly supported gay rights.
Julian continued his work for civil rights until his dying day.
He was the true embodiment of strength... Thank you, Julian for your integrity and wisdom.

Civil Rights Leader Dr. Julian Bond speaks out against the Anti-LGBT Bill in Arkansas
In the HRC Blog, Dr. Bond had this to say:
"H.B. 1228 in Arkansas opens the door to a hateful past that some had thought this country had left behind. This legislation cloaks discrimination in the guise of religion--and it will mark people of color, LGBT Arkansans, religious minorities and women as second class citizens. Governor Hutchinson has a duty and a moral obligation to veto this legislation or the ghosts of the past will haunt his legacy."You tell, em!

Interesting Quote: Julian Bond
"As LGBT people have gained greater equality under the law, we are hearing similar objections to the ones I heard in response to the civil rights gains of African-Americans in the 1960s. We hear people asking for exemptions from laws - laws that prohibit discrimination - on the ground that complying would violate their religious beliefs. ... There are some who feel that ENDA must allow religiously affiliated organizations - far beyond churches, synagogues and mosques - to engage in employment discrimination against LGBT people. We haven't accepted this in the past, and we must not today."source

Black Leadership addresses NOM's Race Baiting Tactics
African American Ministers Leadership Council
“If the success of the National Organization of Marriage’s movement depends on stirring up resentment between communities, it might want to rethink its strategies.
“African American men and women of faith are not a political football to be tossed around in a cynical game of resentment and division. We, like all Americans, struggle thoughtfully with issues of faith, family and politics. Anti-equality activists such as NOM consistently attempt to use a deeply cynical ‘wedge’ strategy to divide African Americans and the gay community, playing up what are now old and tired cliches. In the long run, this strategy will falter as African American and LGBT communities continue to work together for equal justice.
“I celebrate as more and more African American clergy engage in AAMLC’s Healing Grace dialogues and work to confront and overcome stigma, prejudice and homophobia in the Black Church. We continually seek to help and not harm, love and not hate, reconcile and not separate, unite and not divide -- and it's working.
“NOM’s explicit attempt to drive a wedge between the LGBT community and African Americans is deeply offensive, and it exposes the depravity of their politics.”
Julian Bond - Former NAACP President
"NOM's underhanded attempts to divide will not succeed if Black Americans remember their own history of discrimination. Pitting bigotry's victims against other victims is reprehensible; the defenders of justice must stand together."

Interesting Quote: Julian Bond
Standing for the freedom to marry is about supporting all families, but I would be remiss without highlighting the impact that this inequality has on black same-sex couples, who statistically are already economically disadvantaged compared to their straight sisters and brothers. In comparison to black opposite-sex couples and white same-sex couples, black same-sex couples are more likely to parent children and earn a lower annual income. The lack of marriage rights negatively affects black same-sex couples because they are also more likely to work in the public sector, relying on health insurance that is often only afforded to married couples.Well said, Julian.
Furthermore, I firmly believe that marriage strengthens communities. Allowing more couples the opportunity to marry will strengthen the communities — and families — that most need it.
I served for 20 years in the Georgia State House and Senate; I recall difficult decisions my colleagues and I had to make, often torn between conscience and public opinion. I hope the General Assembly will stand for what's right and bring the freedom to marry to Maryland.

Julian Bond is going to March... Equality March that is

NAACP Board Chairman Julian Bond has announced that he's endorsing the National Equality March.
He said:
"GLBT rights are civil rights; there are no 'special rights' in America. Everyone has rights - or should have - and I am happy to join in this battle for justice and fairness."
With this endorsement, will the rest of the NAACP come to call?
