Agents of SHIELD adds a Gay Character

Comic Book Fans get excited!

Agents of SHIELD's new season started Tuesday and they introduced a gay character named Joey Gutierrez.

In a Variety interview with star Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson), she talked about Joey:
Speaking of LGBT rights, I loved that the show introduced its first openly gay character in Joey. He’s struggling with his new Inhuman abilities and obviously has a different perspective from Daisy, but also perhaps some common ground because they’re both used to feeling like outsiders. What can you preview about their dynamic and what he could potentially add to the team?

Joey is the first person that she really feels like could be part of the team; they have to go through a certain level of assessment before that happens. As for him being gay, I was really, really happy to see that, and I am mostly happy to see how nonchalant it was and how subtle it was and how no one made a big deal about it. That’s the kind of reference to someone being gay that I like to see; it doesn’t affect the storyline in any way — it’s subtle, and I thought that was really good on the writers. Just like when people ask what it’s like to play a strong female character and it’s always a little frustrating…
I hope we will see more of him

Agents of SHIELD Season 2 cast pic

And we have:
Clark Gregg (newly installed S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Phil Coulson), Chloe Bennet (Skye), Ming-Na Wen (Agent Melinda May), Iain De Caestecker (Agent Leo Fitz), Elizabeth Henstridge (Agent Jemma Simmons) and Brett Dalton (Grant Ward, exposed late last season as a Hydra double agent) -- along with B.J. Britt, who returns from his season one recurring role as Agent Antoine Triplett. Two new additions to the cast also make it into the promo photo: Nick Blood, who plays Lance Hunter, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s British equivalent, S.T.R.I.K.E.; and Henry Simmons, who plays mechanic and S.H.I.E.L.D. ally Alphonso "Mac" Mackenzie.

Adrianne Palicki cast as Mockingbird in 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

This is a nice bounce back into the comic book world. After the Wonder Woman pilot fizzed, many folks were worried about Adrianne's career.

However, there was no need. Miss Girl has landed a huge role in Marvel Universe. Adrianne is the fierce Mockingbird.

Now, if you don't know about Mockingbird, here's a quickie. She is a SHIELD agent and an Avenger in the comics. Super good in hand to hand combat, like Black Widow, and the girlfriend of Hawkeye.

So excited for Adrianne, she will be great!

10 Reasons why Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should Kill Agents Simmons and Fitz

The two geeky nerds of the team are BORING! They are smart and British, but I'm struggling to like them in the series. So, I think it's time they meet Hela and here's why.

  1. I hate Simmons' voice.
  2. They are not interesting to watch, they should be behind the scenes... Or dead.
  3. Simmons could do something that would destroy the Hub.
  4. The team depends on them too much. Their deaths could make them work harder.
  5. Fitz's death could make Ward a bit more human.
  6. Simmons' fashion sense is too distracting.
  7.  We could get some familiar faces to take their place... Or at least some interesting ones.
  8. Not sure they are essential to the team.
  9. Their deaths could remix the team's priorities in a good way.
  10. Skye may grow into a better character if they are dead.
A team shake up could be good for the series. I think Simmons and Fitz could more dead, than alive.

10 Reasons why we should Stick with Agents of SHIELD

I have been watching and reading the flack that Agents of SHIELD has been receiving. Some say that it doesn't have enough heroes, or that it's boring, or everyone's too pretty.

Basically, there's a lot yapping about the series, but honestly, I think it's on point with good storytelling. I actually like the series and believe it's going to continue the greatness. Here are some of my reasons why I'm Team AoS and why the pacing is A-OK.

  1. Joss Whedon ('nuff said)
  2. This series is explaining how this team works. We need to see how they come together and work together. This takes time... Or 5 episodes.
  3. Remember, in the 1st episode, it was mentioned that more things have been popping up since 'New York Incident'. So, what we are seeing is an active investigative team dealing with these matters. They're the ones are sent in first before the Avengers. Also this is the first time these agents are exposed to the Marvel world we know and love.
  4. Also remember this is kind of the beginning of the Marvel universe, so if we can watch the pieces come together, I'm good.
  5. A slow burn is a good burn. I think it's great to see how the smaller stories grow into bigger ones. And we can watch for the clues along the way.
  6. Characters. Each of these characters have something hidden or interesting about them. There are a lot of things we don't know and I like that there could be a traitor in the midst.
  7. Folks need to get over the fact that it's not a Super Hero series. It's a part of a bigger story, a bigger Marvel Universe.
  8. The first episodes are establishing what SHIELD is, who are the players, what's at stake, and who do we trust. You want an epic story, these pieces need to be defined and developed in the first arc.
  9. Check your definition of a MARVEL properity. Comic Book fans, if you're questioning the validity of this series, then you need to look at the history of Marvel Comics. There has been comics that focused on the non-Superhero stories. Plus, they reference the Marvel Universe quite often.
  10. Also check your expectations. Comparing the writing and stylings of this series to a CW/DC series is... I can't find the words. I believe AoS is trying to give a real feel to their stories. They are trying not to get hokey and CW-ish. Personally, I like that AoS is more for the geeky adults and not for the C-listed fangays and fangirls.
Agents of SHIELD is telling a story and showing us the inner workings of a broader Comic Book universe. That type of storytelling needs to grow and flow in a way that the viewer doesn't get lost. If it took 50 years to tell the stories in Marvel Comics; I think we can follow 22 episodes in one season.

My Vague Review of AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

I was lucky to see the Agents of SHIELD yesterday and I think it will be a hit of the fall season!
But for those of you who will half to wait, I will give you a vague bullet point review:

  • Agent Maria Hill makes an appearance.
  • Agent Coulson lives, but how he lives is a secret.
  • J. August Richards is playing a character named Michael Peterson.
  • The alien technology from the Avengers movie is in the Black market.
  • There are a lot references to the Marvel universe.
  • Who is the secret group gunning for SHIELD?
  • The writing is golden.
  • Melinda May is badass, but what's her story?
  • Skye is interesting.
  • This series takes some pieces rom Iron Man 3.
  • The characters are very engaging.
  • Agent Ward is cute.
  • Neat gadgets
  • There is enough to keep you interested.
  • May see more Marvel folks soon.
So there it is; very vague, no spoilers but hopefully enough for you to tune in.

Is J. August Richards playing Marcus Johnson, otherwise known as Nick Fury Jr. in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

There's a lot of talk about who J. August Richards is in Agents of SHIELD. Producer Jeffrey Bell shed some light on the possibilities, which rules out Luke Cage and Rage.
IGN: And I’ve got to ask about J. August Richards…

Bell: Killed it! He’s so good. He’s so good, because we were looking for this character M-- I almost said his name. It’s not the one people are talking about.

IGN: He’s not! So I’m going to say Luke Cage, and you’re going to say...

Bell: I’m going to say that’s an interesting Marvel character, but no. But he came in and killed it. Honestly, we were looking for this part, and we just said, look, all our parts are open to all diversity. So the fact that we have a black dude who is awesome and it's J, was just because he was the best actor. It wasn’t like, “You know who…!”

IGN: Should we assume it’s someone familiar if you read Marvel comics?

Bell: You know, not necessarily. I mean, we’re going to draw from it, but Marvel has its thing, and we’re also going to be expanding forward, and this world is different since The Avengers. So I think there will be people showing up, some from the Marvel Universe and some not. But to commit to anything more would be telling.
So with that info, I was wondering if J. could be Marcus Johnson/Nick Fury Jr?
