OWS Protesters interrupt President Obama's Speech - VIDEO

Obama tells them that he's on their side.

In New Hampshire just a few minutes ago, President Obama was the latest to receive the human microphone treatment. Really, though, this was probably just an attempt to invent a new human teleprompter.


Unsurprisingly, unlike some of the other protests of this kind, the protesters shouting at the President of the United States didn’t get to take the attention for that long. Shortly after they began their message (“Mr. President, over 4,000 peaceful protesters have been arrested…”), the crowd turned on them, booing and eventually drowning them out with “Obama!” chants.

A group of LGBT equality activists working to end “don’t ask, don’t tell” launched an elaborate protest early Monday evening as President Barack Obama attended a private Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fund-raiser in Miami at the home of NBA star Alonzo Mourning.

As the president headed toward Mourning’s Coconut Grove residence, where donors had paid as much as $5,000 and $18,000 per person to see him, members of GetEqual, a national LGBT rights organization, along with local activists lined the street holding four 10-foot signs that read “End the Discharges Now” and “We’ll Give When We GetEQUAL” – a reference to the group’s recent campaign encouraging people not to donate money to either the Democratic or Republican parties or their campaign committees until the president signs an executive order immediately stopping the discharges.

The group tipped off reporters and photographers from the Associated Press and the local NBC affiliate, who were stationed at the entrance of Mourning’s residence at the exclusive Coral Gables Estates on Alveda Parkway.

Since Mourning's mansion abuts the bay, GetEqual also launched three boats containing activists equipped with signs and bullhorns, which they used to shout chants during president's speech. Additionally, they released into the air four "cloud buster" balloons with 10-foot-long banners reading "GetEQUAL.org" that had been tethered to the sides of the boats. 

Wonderful, with Carl Paladino going on TV saying all types of stuff against us. When Rubin Diaz Sr. continues to win elections, when other GOP leaders deny anti-bullying laws, NOM and other groups are funding anti-gay candidates and a GOP team filibustering any attempt for gay rights. They keep going after the president....

My thoughts on GetEQUAL's protest

So after I thought about it, I realized the GetEQUAL protest may have done more harm than good yesterday.

I'll explain bullet point style:

• There were not enough folks representing GetEQUAL. However, there were many LGBT fam at the event, supporting Obama and Sen. Boxer.
• The heckling at Obama sent many messages that hurt GetEQUAL's credibility. The crowd labeled GetEQUAL as a Tea Party group, misinformed party and a secret GOP group. I'm sure that wasn't GetEQUAL's intentions, but that's the message they sent.
• This was not a LGBT event, so people viewed this as a myopic rant. The message people got was (what I was told) DADT must be the only issue around. I corrected that, but I believed the damage was already done.
• This protest was poorly planned, again look at the pics I posted.
• Obama is NOT the enemy! Please attack the true villains of DADT.
• When the crowd drowned out the DADT chants, GetEQUAL should've took the hint.
• The onlookers were members of South Central community (mostly Black and Latino). This didn't help the major issues between these communities at all.
• Perhaps if GetEQUAL gathered other speakers and orgs, a clear, stronger message could've been sent.

I urge GetEQUAL to rethink their protest strategy. This protest didn't really move them in a strong place. They were dismissed as teabaggers.

I also encourage GetEQUAL to work with others and actually plan stuff out. This broke version of protesting is, well, broke. Get it together and try again.

Oh, and get more people.

Question of the Day part 2

Is it fair to judge Obama in this manor right now? I'm bias, I will admit to that. But am I missing something here?

I'm really struggling with the faltering support of President Obama from gays. I understand the concerns, but does that lead into him ditching us? Betraying us? I know we are dramatic, but great Hera! I'm not sure this is the time to turn our backs on the President.

I'm sorry to harp on this, but it's interesting to me how things are changing. There's a lot going on in this country right now. I am willing to wait until things are not so rocky. I can't enjoy my marriage if I'm broke, with no job and my health care is a joke.

Am I out of the loop? Am I too optimistic?

Obama Rally at the Beverly Hilton

So I attended the next Week of Equality rally at the Beverly Hilton. At this venture, folks were protesting Obama's promises towards Gay Rights.

Y'all know where I stand, but there are others who believes Obama has ditched us.

But not me, I have hope.
