Big Star Wars Movie News! Spin-Off Movie and new Director for Episode VIII

Today, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger revealed the first Star Wars stand-alone movie and the title.

The film is called, Rogue One, and it will feature new and different characters. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (the recent Godzilla) and written by Chris Weitz (Cinderella and About a Boy). Felicity Jones is the first actress tied to the film.

But wait, there's more... Bob announced that famed director Rian Johnson (Looper) will write and direct (of course) Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film is set for release on May 26, 2017.

Now, that's some Force for ya!

Star Wars gets their first LGBT Character

I thought this was interesting.

In the new Star Wars novel, "Lords of the Sith," writer Paul S. Kemp will introduce a new (and the first) LGBT character in the series!

The character's name is Moff Mors, who's an Imperial and a lesbian.

Shelly Shapiro, editor of "Star Wars" books at Del Rey, talked to me about this for the Full of Sith podcast. During that interview I asked her about the inclusion of this character in the book. She explained that it wasn't necessarily about making a statement, but simply reflecting the diversity in the universe.

"This is certainly the first character in canon," Shapiro says. "But there was a gay Mandalorian couple, so it's not brand new. It's not something I really think about, it just makes sense. There's a lot of diversity–there should be diversity in "Star Wars." You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there's a lot of diversity in humans. If there's any message at all, it's simply that "Star Wars" is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don't want to pretend it's not. It just felt perfectly natural."

The New "Star Wars" film has already begun Shooting

Disney chairman Alan Horn revealed some interesting news at the Loyola Marymount School of Film and Television. He said that “Star Wars Episode VII” has already begun shooting and the cast is almost complete!

According to Variety, Alan said this about the cast:

“We have a lot of them, it’s not completely done yet.”

And about shooting:

“We’re actually shooting some of it now.”

So the real questions are: Who are the cast members and what's the story about? I'm not the biggest SW fan, but I'm excited for this installment.

This is the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars: Return of The Jedi

This was the 3rd movie I got to see in the theaters. I remember being so caught in Leia's outfit and Han's sexy smile. Anywho, this film defined the meaning behind the word TRILOGY and gave us the adorable Ewoks.

Gay Love in Star Wars? Yes

In the latest version of the Star Wars role-playing game, The Rise of the Hutt Cartel, Jedis can soon experience same-sex relationships.

But the characters not controlled by the player, that's the only setback.

Jeff Hickman, executive producer of game developer BioWare, apologized for the delay in including the gay romance option.

'I realize that we promised SGR (same gender romance) to you guys and that many of you believed that this would be with a companion character,' Hickman wrote on his State of the Game blog yesterday (2 January).

'Unfortunately, this will take a lot more work than we realized at the time and it (like some other pieces of content we talked about earlier in the year) has been delayed as we focused on the changes required to take the game Free-to-Play.

'As we have said in the past, allowing same gender romance is something we are very supportive of.'

But he added that they will introduce more gay romance options in the future.

I love it when gay stuff seeps into geek stuff.

The Man who Designed Star Wars is Gone. Ralph McQuarrie dead at 82

Ralph McQuarrie is the man behind the look and feel of Star Wars.  He gave us the look of one of our most iconic characters, Darth Vader.

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph McQuarrie. People say you should never meet your heroes. Ralph was the exception to that rule. We were all fans of his amazing art long before we were blessed with his friendship. But once you got to know Ralph it was impossible not to become a fan of Ralph the man. 

Ralph was a very special person for many more reasons than his undeniable brilliance with a brush. He was an especially kind, sensitive, deep, modest, funny and fascinating gentleman. And as fine a role model as any one could have wished for.

His influence on design will be felt forever. There's no doubt in our hearts that centuries from now amazing spaceships will soar, future cities will rise and someone, somewhere will say ...
"that looks like something Ralph McQuarrie painted."

A part of my heart just closed. Because of the stupid gimmick, known as Avatar, all of the Star Wars movies will be released in 3 Frakking D!

Big news on the 3D front.

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set on rereleasing the "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Although 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas purportedly was waiting until there were enough screens available to make the release a sizable event.

Fox, which released all six original "Star Wars" films, also would release the 3D versions.

Episode I, "The Phantom Menace," would be first out of star-dock during early 2012. After that, each film would be released in order at the same time in consecutive years, depending on how well the first rerelease does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas overseeing the process to make sure each is as perfect as possible. He has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" is ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Starting with "Phantom Menace," Lucasfilm would use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project. By late winter or early spring in 2012, the exhibition industry should have all the 3D screens anyone could want for such a release.

Whatever Happened to The "Star Wars Kid"?

Do y'all remember Star Wars Kid? If not, here's a refresher

Bless his heart... this is Ghyslain Raza and was a high school student then.

Back in 2002, Ghyslain made a video of himself doing these fighting moves. Some students found the tape and uploaded it on YouTube during it's early days. Once the video was uploaded, his classmates watched it and ridiculed him badly for it.

The pressure from that video caused Ghyslain to go into depression. He also needed psychiatric help just to cope. His family sued the classmates who posted the video and later settled out of court.

As time passed, the video became a cult hit. It was remixed, remastered and even featured on Family Guy and The Colbert Report.

But what happened to Ghyslain? Well, he bounced back. He is a law student at Montreal’s McGill University and a president of a nonprofit organization, preserving the culture and heritage of a town called, Trois-Rivières.
I'm glad he got his life back on track. Although he went through some painful times, I'm sure he is stronger and better for it. So congrats to him!
