Tony Perkins blames Shooting on Southern Poverty Law Center for labeling FRC as a Hate Group

Hmmm... So we should blame the folks for calling you out on your hateful and divisive ways... That's a new one on me.

Tony, this is ridic and everyone will see it.

Interesting Quote: Brian Brown

"Today's attack is the clearest sign we've seen that labeling pro-marriage groups as 'hateful' must end. The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the Family Research Council a 'hate group' for its pro-marriage views, and less than a day ago the Human Rights Campaign issued a statement calling FRC a 'hate group'—they even specified that FRC hosts events in Washington, DC, where today's attack took place."

"NOM has always condemned all violence and vilification connected to our ongoing national debate about the meaning and definition of marriage. For too long national gay rights groups have intentionally marginalized and ostracized pro-marriage groups and individuals by labeling them as 'hateful' and 'bigoted' -- such harmful and dangerous labels deserve no place in our civil society and NOM renews its call today for gay rights groups and the Southern Poverty Law Center to withdraw such incendiary rhetoric from a debate that involves millions of good Americans. Violence is never the answer, and on that we all must agree, or risk the consequences."

And here is Brian talking more mess about the FRC incident on CNN

So how do we handle the (Possible) FRC Fallout

Now that we know the FRC shooter was a volunteer at a LGBT center, the haters could have a field day throwing this all in our faces.

However, we can be ready for whatever they slam at us. They will say that it's a hate crime, or the gays have always been violent and unruly. But instead of going all hateful or staging Kiss-Ins at the FRC's HQ, we could take a few other routes.
  • Denounce the shooter's actions, make sure folks know that we don't support violence or murder.
  • Don't get into the petty name calling. Let the haters do what they do best... Be haters.
  • Be sure we recognize the tragedy. Someone was shot; we should address that issue and send our condolences.
  • Question NOM and the other hate groups on their own tactics. Make them voice why they took the negative, divisive role on the incident. Make them explain why they have made this a political fight.
  •  Stay on message. Activists easily get mad, but slowly get on point. Whatever they throw at us, we have to stay on point. Focus on the issues at hand: This ain't a LGBT attack, we don't condone violence and we will not stoop to petty tactics.
Okay, that's all I got! Please share if you have anything.

FRC Shooter volunteered at DC LGBT community center, FBI Interviews the Center

Word is out that the shooter Floyd Corkins was a LGBT volunteer at the D.C. LGBT community center. Now the FBI are involved.
Chris Geidner has more
The FBI has interviewed the head of D.C.'s center for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community because a volunteer at the center is suspected in today's shooting of a security guard at the Family Research Council, a religious conservative organization also based in D.C.

The suspect in today's shooting, Floyd Corkins II of Virginia, had been volunteering on some weekends at the front desk of The Center, D.C.'s LGBT community center, the center's executive director, David Mariner told BuzzFeed.

"The FBI was just here, and we are cooperating with them fully," Mariner said. "We are shocked and appalled that this happened, and I cannot even imagine —"

He added, "All of our volunteers, they register online, they go through a background check, and then they go through a training."

Mariner also provided a statement that the center is releasing to the media that states, "I was shocked to hear that someone who has volunteered with the DC Center could be the No matter the circumstances, we condemn such violence in the strongest terms possible. We hope for a full and speedy recovery for the victim and our thoughts are with him and his family."
