In North Carolina: ACLU files a Lawsuit against HB 2

It ain't over in North Carolina!

After the Governor signed into law HB 2, equality groups have been coming up with a plan to strike back. Today, that plan is about to pop off!

The American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of North Carolina, Lambda Legal, and Equality North Carolina filed a lawsuit, challenging the Anti-LGBT bill.

They point out that the bill tramples people’s equal protection rights under the Constitution and their civil rights under Title IX of the Education Act of 1972. If they pull this off, these bills are dead, because you can't screw with the Constitution.

The battle is on!

The ACLU Files a Response to Pam Bondi's Silly Stay Extension

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a response to Florida AG Pan Bondi's stupid and desperate attempt to stop marriage equality to SCOTUS.

The ACLU's response states that the Court should reject Florida’s request for further extension of the stay placed on a federal court’s decision that struck down the marriage ban.

“Governor Scott, his appointees, and Attorney General Pam Bondi’s efforts to delay the implementation of the order striking down the marriage ban are as senseless as they are incredibly harmful,” stated ACLU of Florida LGBT rights staff attorney Daniel Tilley. “Every day that the couples we represent and the thousands of families across Florida who are also denied the protections of marriage go without those protections, they are suffering real harm, as Judge Hinkle’s order made plainly clear. We are glad to have had the opportunity to explain to our nation’s highest court why it is time to let love win in Florida, and we are hopeful that the Court will reject Governor Scott and Attorney General Bondi’s increasingly-desperate efforts, just as it has refused all requests to stay rulings striking down discriminatory marriage bans since this October.”

In Wisconsin: Same-Sex Couples and ACLU sues Scott Walker over Gay Marriage

Four same-sex couples and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has sued Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker over the state's ban on gay marriage.

The couples are: Roy Badger and Garth Wangemann; Charvonne Kemp and Marie Carlson; Judith Trampf and Katharina Heyning; and Virginia Wolf and Carol Schumacher.

The lawsuit also seeks to repeal Wisconsin’s "marriage evasion" law. This law criminalizes leaving the state to “contract a marriage that is prohibited or void” in Wisconsin. Any couple who violates this piece can be fined up to “$10,000 or imprisoned for not more than 9 months or both.”

3 Big Civil Rights Groups file a lawsuit on SB1070

The ACLU, NAACP and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund are trying to challenge the infamous Arizona law with a lawsuit.

HuffPo reports:

The American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund are among the groups that filed the latest challenge in U.S. District Court on behalf of labor unions and others.

County attorneys and sheriffs in Arizona's 15 counties -- but not the state or Gov. Jan Brewer -- were named as defendants.

The Republican governor was included among defendants in at least four earlier lawsuits filed to challenge the law. All the lawsuits were expected to eventually be consolidated for court consideration.

The immigration law takes effect July 29 unless blocked by a court.

Its provisions include a requirement that police enforcing another law question people about their immigration status if there's "reasonable suspicion" of illegal presence in the United States.

ACLU sues a Mississppi High School over a lesbian student and her date

Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi has a case on their hands.

This school actually canceled their prom because they didn't want a young lesbian couple to go. Well, that foolishness was counter attacked by American Civil Liberties Union. They have filed a lawsuit against them.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, alleges that officials at Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Mississippi, are violating the student's First Amendment right to freedom of expression.

The ACLU asked the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi to reinstate the prom.

"All I wanted was the same chance to enjoy my prom night like any other student. But my school would rather hurt all the students than treat everyone fairly," said the student, 18-year-old Constance McMillen, in an ACLU news release. "This isn't just about me and my rights anymore -- now I'm fighting for the right of all the students at my school to have our prom."

These folks need to open their minds. Times have change and our kids are moving on.

ACLU is coming for Chico's Tacos

ACLU in Texas are coming for Chico’s Tacos and the El Paso police. In fact, they are demand full inquiry into the crazy incident with the dumbass cop and the kiss that destroyed Texas.

Here's what ACLU had to say

"We’re extremely concerned that the actions of the restaurant employees and the El Paso police may have violated the law," said ACLU of Texas legal director Lisa Graybill. "The City of El Paso prohibits restaurants from refusing service to anyone based on their sexual orientation, and the police should have enforced that ordinance.”

The group of men was reportedly at Chico’s on June 29, when they were asked to leave by private security guards who saw two of the men kissing. According to news reports, the guards told the men that “faggot stuff” wasn’t allowed in the restaurant. Police were called to the scene by both parties, but instead of assisting the men, the responding officer reportedly threatened to cite them for “homosexual activity.” Police reportedly told the men that same-sex kissing was forbidden in public.

"It is absolutely shocking that an El Paso police officer would be so poorly trained on the law," said ACLU of Texas staff attorney Fleming Terrell. "No such prohibition exists under city, state or federal law, nor would the Constitution permit it."

Hopefully this will be and turning point for Texas' backwoods thinking. They do need a cultural make-over.

ACLU told Tennessee Schools a thing or Two

Not so long ago, two Tennessee public school districts, Knox County Schools and Metro Nashville Public Schools blocked students from accessing LGBT organizations and other LGBT-positive websites, but allowed full access to any anti-gay sites.

The ACLU got involved, quickly turned that mess around and now, they have access!

Dozens of Tennessee schools have restored access to online information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, just over two weeks after the American Civil Liberties Union filed suit against two Tennessee school districts for unconstitutionally blocking student access to such sites. The company that provides Internet filtering software to as many as 107 Tennessee schools has adjusted the software to allow access to a variety of educational and political LGBT Web sites that were blocked before the lawsuit was filed.

"All we ever wanted was to be able to get information out about LGBT issues, like what our legal rights are or what scholarships are available for LGBT students, so I'm really happy that the schools are finally making our Web access fair and balanced," said Bryanna Shelton, a 16-year-old student at Fulton High School in Knoxville and a plaintiff in the case. "These Web sites were never something dirty or inappropriate in any way and shouldn't ever have been treated like they were."

It was a shame that this was happening, but sadly, it's Tennessee. It's my home state and I know they're not the most LGBT friendly place. With that said, I'm proud to hear this news. I wish for more changes like.
