From Comic-Con: Gays in Comics Panel

One of the biggest highlights of Comic-Con was the Gays in Comics Panel.

This panel consisted of :
Andy Mangels
(best-selling author of Star Trek novels and Iron Man: Beneath The Armor) Greg Rucka, the acclaimed author of Detective Comics (featuring the lesbian Batwoman and The Question)
Phil Jimenez
, artist of Astonishing X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man
Gail Simone, writer of Wonder Woman and Secret Six
Peter David, writer of Fallen Angel and lots of novels
Ed Luce, the writer/artist of the Bear-centric Wuvable Oaf
Sina Grace, whose Books with Pictures and illustrated novel Cedric Hollows in Dial M for Magic
Perry Moore, writer of Hero

The discussions were awesome. They talked about the Shatterstar and Rictor romance, diversifying the gay characters, Wonder Woman, the changes they hope to see and what else can be done to strengthen LGBT characters in comics.

It was great to see our family members representing in the geek and comic world. Sometimes in L.A., all you see is the plastic and shallow side of gay life; but at this panel discussion, I felt at home.

The crowd was very receptive and the panelists were fascinating. It was a purely a wonderful time. And... I got to meet Gay Comic Geek! Paul is very nice and sweet guy.

So this was a great closing event for my Comic-Con experience. Oh, this was their 22nd year in doing the panel, so congrats on continuing the legacy.

Rob Liefeld is Hatin on Shatterstar and Rictor hooking up

As most of us comic book geeks rejoice over the Shatterstar and Rictor kiss, some folks don't. Especially, one of the original artists and creator of Shatterstar, Rob Liefeld.
Rob Liefeld isn’t happy about the latest plot development involving Shatterstar, the Marvel superhero he introduced 18 years ago.

Last week’s X-Factor #45 ended years of speculation, and in-story hints, about the relationship between Shatterstar and Rictor by showing the former X-Force teammates — both C-list players in the X-Men universe — reuniting with a kiss.

On his blog, X-Factor writer Peter David assured fans the development “isn’t a fake out.”

Liefeld, however, wishes otherwise.

“… I have nothing against gays, I have gay family, nuthin’ but love here,” he wrote on his message board (registration required). “Ditto gay characters if that’s what their true origins are.

“As the guy that created, designed and wrote his first dozen appearances, Shatterstar is not gay. Sorry. Can’t wait to someday undo this. Seems totally contrived.”

Created by Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Shatterstar debuted in New Mutants #99 (March 1991) before becoming a fixture of X-Force when the series launched a few months later.

Seems totally contrived, Rob? We can say that about your art as well.

Gay Comic Books Geeks: Shatterstar and Rictor KISS!!

Wow, I kind of thought...maybe fantasized about this, but I never thought this would happen!

If y'all ever read the 90s versions of the New Mutants/X-Factor/X-Force, you know Rictor and Shatterstar.

Rictor is the cute Mexican mutant who can cause earthquakes

Shatterstar is the mysterious refugee from Mojoworld with a cute face and fierce warrior streak.

They came on the scene during my high school years and I'm enjoyed them ever since. Now with this new revelation, I have to go through my old comics to find signs.

This is so rad! Check out X-Factor 45
