"I want to congratulate the Hawaii State Legislature on passing legislation in support of marriage equality. With today’s vote, Hawaii joins a growing number of states that recognize that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be treated fairly and equally under the law. Whenever freedom and equality are affirmed, our country becomes stronger. By giving loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry if they choose, Hawaii exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation. I’ve always been proud to have been born in Hawaii, and today’s vote makes me even prouder. And Michelle and I extend our best wishes to all those in Hawaii whose families will now be given the security and respect they deserve."From his press release

Hawaii Legislature approves Civil Unions
Hawaii Civil Unions bill passed both Senate and House and now is set for the governor's signature!
Senate Bill 232 was approved by a 18-5 vote.
It now goes to Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who supports civil unions and has promised to sign the bill into law.
"I have always believed that civil unions respect our diversity, protect people's privacy, and reinforce our core values of equality and aloha," Abercrombie said in a statement after the vote.
"I appreciate all the time and effort invested by those who shared their thoughts and concerns regarding civil unions in Hawaii. This has been an emotional process for everyone involved, but that process is now ended. Everyone has been heard; all points of view respected.
"For me, this bill represents equal rights for all the people of Hawaii," Abercrombie said.Hawaii becomes the seventh state to grant civil unions to same-sex couples without authorizing marriage itself. Five states and Washington, D.C., permit same-sex marriage.
It's a good day in Hawaii!

Will She or Won't She

Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle has a big decision in her hands.
She could sign or veto the civil unions bill tomorrow. The question is what will she do?
KHON 2 reports:
We will see what Miss Girl will do.Her options are to sign it, veto, or allow it to become law without her signature.
"I really thought about this more than I thought about any other piece of legislation and any other issue that's faced society,” said Gov. Lingle. “I don't know the exact number but I think it's running 60-40 against but as I'm going to talk about tomorrow -- that isn't what helped me to make a decision on this it was really the depth of feeling on both sides -- so I look forward to sharing that with everybody tomorrow."
The civil unions bill gives same-sex couples the same rights and responsibilities of marriage.
