Evolving Already? Obama Administration says DOMA is Unconstitutional

Maybe folks didn't noticed, but on Friday, the Obama Administration declared DOMA to be unconstitutional. During the Karen Golinski's case, the Justice Department said she and her partner should not be denied benefits; and DOMA violates the equal protection of the couple.

Here's the breakdown:

"The official legislative record makes plain that DOMA Section 3 was motivated in large part by animus toward gay and lesbian individuals and their intimate relationships, and Congress identified no other interest that is materially advanced by Section 3," the brief reads, referring to the section in the act that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.

Though the administration has previously said it will not defend the marriage act, the brief is the first court filing in which it urges the court to find the law unconstitutional, said Tobias Barrington Wolff, a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

"This brief represents the concrete manifestation of a complete paradigm shift in the federal government's position on anti-gay discrimination and the constitutional rights of married same-sex couples," Wolff said in a phone interview Saturday.

This is the first time the administration goes on record, saying DOMA is unconstitutional. We should pay attention. Obama's evolving stage is moving forward.

In Georgia: LGBT Community joins the Protest against the new Immigration law HB 87

After the new immigration law HB 87 passed in Georgia, many folks quickly came out against it, including the LGBT community.

In fact, several leaders of the LGBT community released statements supporting immigrant community and condemning the bill:

Paulina Hernandez, co-director, Southerners on New Ground:
"The LGBTQ community has a lot to risk with the passage of HB-87 and we are outraged that the governor has chosen to ignore all the community outcry from citizens, legal residents and immigrant communities alike, his arrogance will mark a political moment we will not forget," she said.


Paris Hatcher, executive director, SPARK! Reproductive Justice NOW:
"SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW stands in solidarity with SONG and other people of color and LGBTQ led organizations in the South for the July 2 Mass Mobilization. We share and echo the call for renewed commitment for justice for immigrants and other marginalized communities who are facing increased surveillance and profiling with the passage of HB87," she said. "As a community centered organization led by the experiences of women of color and LGBTQ people, we understand a temporary injunction is not enough, and only a full repeal of HB87 can mitigate the devastating impact of this racist bill on the lives, families, and communities of our people," she added.


Mary Anne Adams, board member and founder of ZAMI NOBLA, a national organization of black lesbians on aging:
"This bill uses racial profiling as a tool of Georgia to police, detain, arrest and deport Latino immigrants. Moreover, it places all people of color in the cross-hairs of Police and ICE collaboration. As a black lesbian organization we are concerned that our base, our communities and our allies will be affected with its passing and implementation. We urge our comrades to build unity across communities that experience homophobia, sexism and racism …," she said.


Craig Washington, prevention programs manager at AID Atlanta:
"As a black gay man who has been HIV positive for most of my life, I embody identities deemed as taboo, different, queer, those whose bodies are demonized, criminalized and imprisoned. I do not need to face the same pitfalls as an immigrant to recognize where our paths cross," he said. "Let our chants resound to claim freedom for all, to celebrate the contributions of immigrants throughout Georgia and the nation, to declare that we share the struggle, and that only when we are all free, can we proclaim the victory."

The law took effect on Friday. On a quick note, I am happy the see the LGBT community come out and support other causes. This really speaks to the notion of power by numbers. I hope this is a continuing and growing trend.

Old School Crush: Michael Delorenzo

I used to be in love with Michael Delorenzo way back in the day. I used to imagine he was this streetwise boy who was try to protect me as the country, innocent boy lost in the city (yes, I fantasized a lot as a teen).

There was something about him that kept me drawn to his looks. I fell for him in the dance classic movie, 'Fast Forward' and later 'Fame' the series. I even watched 'New York Undercover' for him.

I've grown out of my crush for Michael, but every once and a while, I die when I see him in Fame.

What the Bible Really Says about Gay Marriage

I love to hear statements like: "God doesn't support Gay Marriage" or "Gay Marriage is a sin, the Bible says so". But the funny thing is, the Bible says nothing about it... Nothing.

I found this piece in HuffPo, by Lee Jefferson that points out a couple of things the Bible doesn't discuss:

Second, the Bible does not clearly endorse one form of marriage over another. Adam and Eve as the divine groom and bride is one Biblical arrow in the quiver of same-sex union opponents. The Yahwist creation story in Genesis (the second creation story) has God forming Eve out of Adam's rib, and Adam exclaiming their unity ("this is at last bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh"). This is a gender creation story, not a creation of marriage story. Adam and Eve do not exchange rings, say "I do" and have a jazz band reception in Paradise. 

Third, the Biblical arguments against same-sex marriage are not proffered from texts that deal with marriage, but from texts that purportedly deal with same-sex orientation. Same-sex marriage is rejected as un-Christian and immoral on the basis of a myopic reading of a very few Biblical texts. And the texts in question are scant indeed. The most referenced texts are Genesis 19; the holiness codes of Leviticus 17-26, and in the New Testament, Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 6:9 and his Letter to the Romans 1:26-27. Not only does one have to "hunt" for references to same-sex practices, but there are no gospel texts that treat the matter. There is nothing attributed to Jesus of Nazareth that has anything to do with same-sex orientation. According to the gospels, Jesus never commented on same-sex practices; that fact certainly bears repeating to anyone criticizing the gay community on Christian grounds. Largely, same-sex practice is a topic of little interest to the Biblical authors. 

Unless these folks are ready a new, new version of the Bible, Gay Marriage is nowhere to be found. Please check out the article.

President Obama will host the First Live Town Hall Meeting on Twitter
