50 Shades of Grey sells out in the Deep South... Go Figure

Funny how this plays out. The softcore film, 50 Shades of Grey is sold out in the most bigoted parts of the US.

Ticket sales for the movie, which opens Thursday, are particularly strong in Arkansas, Kentucky, and Mississippi – with pre-show sales three or four times higher than average, reported the Washington Post.

Opening day shows are already sold out in Tupelo, Mississippi, Florence, Kentucky, and Chattanooga, Tennessee, the newspaper reported.

Audiences are also eager to see the film — which depicts a master-and-servant sexual relationship between a college student and a businessman — in Alabama, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

With the exception of Iowa and West Virginia, all of those states are among the remaining 13 where same-sex marriage is banned through constitutional amendment and state law.

Stupidity reigns in Mississippi - 52% believes Obama is a Muslim

This is not a surprise, but it's so sad. In the deep parts of the South, many of them still believe Obama is a Muslim.

In the midst of tight GOP primaries in both states, Public Policy Polling (PPP) has released information showing that a majority of likely GOP primary voters in the Deep South do not see Obama as a Christian. PPP's Alabama survey of 600 likely GOP primary voters found that only 14 percent consider Obama a Christian, while 45 percent said he is a Muslim and 41 percent answered that they were not sure. 

A similar picture surfaced in Mississippi. Of 656 likely GOP primary voters surveyed, 12 percent said Obama was a Christian, 52 percent classified him as a Muslim, and 36 percent fell in the "not sure" category.

Public Policy Polling surveyed Mississippi Republicans about politics and what have you. When the issue of Interracial marriage came up, this was the result:

President Obama Slams Gov. Donnell Over Confederate History Month

Gov. Bob McDonnell believes Slavery wasn't Significant

Last Friday, Gov. Bob McDonnell declared April to be Confederate History Month on his website. Many folks were outraged and appalled by this gesture, and thought it was highly insensitive.

However, some peeps mentioned that slavery wasn't noted in his announcement. But, Bob left that out because he didn't think it was significant:

McDonnell said Tuesday that the move was designed to promote tourism in the state, which next year will mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the war. McDonnell said he did not include a reference to slavery because “there were any number of aspects to that conflict between the states. Obviously, it involved slavery. It involved other issues. But I focused on the ones I thought were most significant for Virginia.“

I don't know how to take that statement. Slavery was significant, in so many ways. And maybe it's just me, but when you talk about the Confederacy and the many things it stood for, I can't help but think about slavery and racial issues besetting it.

I still think it was a bad move on Bob's part.

WHEREAS, Virginia has long recognized her Confederate history, the numerous civil war battlefields that mark every region of the state, the leaders and individuals in the Army, Navy and at home who fought for their homes and communities and Commonwealth in a time very different than ours today; and [...]

WHEREAS, this defining chapter in Virginia's history should not be forgotten, but instead should be studied, understood and remembered by all Virginians, both in the context of the time in which it took place, but also in the context of the time in which we live, and this study and remembrance takes on particular importance as the Commonwealth prepares to welcome the nation and the world to visit Virginia for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Civil War, a four-year period in which the exploration of our history can benefit all;

Southern Brothers are unaware of Risky Behaviors

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to break my heart with this news.

Young black gay and bisexual men from the South are infected with HIV at staggering and high numbers.

In a small survey, we learn more than half of the 29 gay or bisexual men surveyed have had unprotected anal sex in the year before they were infected. The sad part is they thought they would never be infected.

The health officials are scrambling to find the risk factors to develop education and intervention programs.

Here are the deeper details:

The agencies surveyed 29 black men ages 17 to 25 who had tested positive for H.I.V. between 2006 and 2008 and who reported having sex with other men. Twenty reported having unprotected anal intercourse with a man during the year before their positive H.I.V. tests, and 16 reported having male sex partners who were 26 or older.

Having older sex partners increases the risk of infection because older men are more likely than younger men to be infected.

Only three of the 29 men thought it likely they would acquire H.I.V. during their lifetime. More than half thought it unlikely or very unlikely, the survey found.

Health officials were particularly concerned about the lack of routine H.I.V. testing in this group of young men. Six of the men had not had a single H.I.V. test in the two years prior to testing positive, and five had had only one test in the two years before the positive result, the survey found.

“These men may have taken what they believed were reasonable steps to reduce their risk, but unfortunately the rates of H.I.V. infection are so high in this population that sometimes people have partners who are H.I.V. positive and do not know it,” said Richard Wolitski, director of the C.D.C.’s division of H.I.V./AIDS Prevention.

Down in Tennessee...

The Prop 8 rallies are reaching my home state of Tennessee. In Nash-vegas, they showed up in front of Nashville City Hall and down the street from the Tennessee state capitol.

About 300 gathered to protest. There were stories about being real parents to their kids, going to another state to be married, and even a straight married couple threw in their opinions on how stupid Prop 8 is.

I'm surprised to be honest. Tennessee is an true southern state; but to hear and see people rallying in the major part of the city, gives me hope. Keep it up y'all.

Not everyone views Obama as a Change to Believe in

A sign posted on a tree in Vay, Idaho, with Obama's name all over it, offers a "free public hanging."

In North Carolina, there is threatening racist graffiti all about Obama in a tunnel close to the North Carolina State University campus.

In a convenience store in a Maine, an AP reporter saw a sign asking customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might be assassinated. The "The Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," had a $1 buy in and if you got close to the date you would win. At the end of the sign it said, "Let's hope we have a winner".

And this one got to me: One of the most popular white supremacist Web sites got more than 2,000 new members the day after the election, compared with 91 new members on Election Day, according to an AP count.

The site, stormfront.org, was temporarily off-line Nov. 5 because of the overwhelming amount of activity it received after Election Day. On Saturday, one Stormfront poster, identified as Dalderian Germanicus, of North Las Vegas, said, "I want the SOB laid out in a box to see how 'messiahs' come to rest. God has abandoned us, this country is doomed."

Sad...this is our "great" country.

America's Best: West Plains, Missouri

Raymond Fine, 74, of West Plains, said the sign is a form of free speech. "If they can burn a flag, then they can put a sign up like that."

The sign is located south of West Plains on U.S. 63 across from the Dairy Queen.

Outrage over the sign triggered West Plains resident Becky Estes to write a letter in Monday's edition of the Daily Quill newspaper saying "such a tasteless display merely reinforces the wide-spread belief that Ozarkers are ignorant country bumpkins."

And we do, Becky. As much as I hate to say it, most people do think Mid-Western/Southern folks are the bane of the American existence.

Harold's the Man

Okay, this partly true and partly because I think he's very attractive. But I think, Harold Ford Jr. would be a good Vice President. He's has all the right credentials and savvy to pull it off. He's from my home state of Tennessee, he's ambitious, a hard worker, and a advocate for change. If Obama needs someone, Harold can do it. He's not perfect, but he 's a good man.

Plus, he's a cutie.

Mississippi Partying

I found this interesting piece of info today. I didn't think segregation still existed or seriously existed now. But I read this article about Mississippi and found out that this town of Charleston, just had their first mixed prom.

Their first one! Thanks to Morgan Freeman, the actor, who grew up near the small town. He paid for the prom to happen and hopes this will open people's minds. The kids were fine with it, but the parents and the older crowd wasn't feeling it(those damn grown-ups).
