What was spent in the Maine Battle?

That's a lot of money used against our happiness. These so called "religious" groups could have used this money to save schools, buy kids toys for the holidays and give families a meal on Thanksgiving.

This is just sad to see what hate can do.

Let's get Up, Dust off and Move Forward

Alright... We have a set back in Maine. The battle took another turn and marriage equality wasn't won.

It hurts, but now we need to dust ourselves off and get back to work.

For the last few days, I seen and read many things about out loss in Maine. The blame game continues and folks rant and rave about "Who shot J.R.?" and other drama.

But instead of blaming God and Smurfette, we need to gather new strategies for the next battle. In my personal opinion, we are wasting energy blaming Obama. We are going on an empty notion that his words would've change their minds just like that. Maine is a heavy Catholic area, their believe system is deeply rooted in that faith. With that in mind, I'm not sure Obama's words would've made a difference.

Folks have said Obama could've campaigned for Maine the same way he did for the candidates in Virginia and New Jersey... However, they lost. It would been nice to hear him talk about Maine, but it's a bit naive to believe that it's his fault.

We had some victories, we should relish in that. They may be considered small, but they are strong steps in the right direction.

The loss in Maine was not so huge, we can see that folks are willing to be open-minded and it's only a matter of time. I believe it will happen, I know it will. However, I'm not going to waste time blaming everybody and everything. I'm going to keep on movin' and working.

Let's be resilient and less snarky.

No Help from our National Orgs.?

The aftermath of our loss in Maine is very interesting.

Of course there's finger pointing and blame passed around like a collection plate in a Baptist church. But instead of following the trend, I will try to get to the heart of the matter.

First focus: Our national orgs. like HRC, NGLTF

Queerty claims they didn't do much, but this article says different...

The pro-gay marriage organization Human Rights Campaign, based in Washington, D.C., has contributed more than $140,000 to the No on 1 campaign plus donated more than $80,000 worth of goods, services or staff time.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has given the No on 1 campaign at least $75,000 plus donated nearly $65,000 in staff time or other materials.

So our national groups did help out in this battle. So let's stop blaming them.

I will address other parts of the blame game. The infighting must cease.

Tonight, hundreds of thousands of Maine voters stood for equality, but in the end, it wasn't enough.

I am proud of the thousands of Mainers who knocked on doors, made phone calls and talked to their family, friends and neighbors about the basic premise of treating all Maine families equally.

And I'm proud of this campaign because the stories we told and the images we shared were of real Mainers -- parents who stood up for their children, and couples who simply wanted to marry the person they love.

We're in this for the long haul. For next week, and next month, and next year-- until all Maine families are treated equally. Because in the end, this has always been about love and family and that will always be something worth fighting for.

David Mixner will play "It's yor Fault, Obama" on the jukebox today

In David's blog, he spent some time blaming Obama for not telling folks to vote against the anti-gay agenda.

He said:

You have to be totally operating on blind faith if you believe that President Obama and his team cannot make a difference. Tragically if we lose closely, that defeat almost can be laid at the steps of the White House for their refusal to stand by our side in the battle for freedom. The Holder remark basically gave those Obama supporters and non-white voters permission to vote against our freedom. The Attorney General let them know that Obama didn't care one way or another so why should those voters change their votes? He gave their votes respectability which was devastating for our side.

The failure of our national organizations to obtain a clear cut endorsement for the LGBT community is something that needs to be discussed. This one isn't rocket science. What happened?

We certainly know by the president's repeated visits to Virginia, New York and New Jersey that he at least had time to issue a tough statement against this form of ballot box bigotry. What they did and failed to do these past weeks, whether we win or lose tonight, is just tragic, sad and unconscionable.

David, while I respect you, I think this is a bit much. Most folks don't want the President getting involved in any state initiatives. We didn't want Bush doing it, why would we want Obama doing it. Oh, because it benefits us.

But let's play with that notion. What if Obama did get involved and we still lost? Would it be his fault then? It would have been worse if he got involved because it would've opened a barrel of worms. Imagine other groups asking for Obama to get involved---
"Hey Obama, support weed!" or " Obama get behind the three strike rule against teenage gang members!" Regardless if it's right or wrong, I think it's best for him to stay out of ballot initiatives. That's the job of our Congresspeople and other state elected officials. If Obama got involved and failed, it would be used against him, giving us far worse consequences. Hell, if he succeeded, it still would've haunted him.

Plus, Obama doesn't have a mystical hold on people of color, so that piece about us taking away freedoms is poppycock.

David, consistently blaming only others destroys any opportunity to change.

The Maine battle is getting tight, the vote is coming up very soon. Hopefully, they will prevail.

And then, this Robert Hannah kid gets 180 days after killing a gay man. They used the "Gay Panic" mess to defend him.

This really makes it clear why the Hate Crimes Act must completely pass.
