Death of the Sci-Fi begins here: All 6 Star Wars Re-released in 3D

A part of my heart just closed. Because of the stupid gimmick, known as Avatar, all of the Star Wars movies will be released in 3 Frakking D!

Big news on the 3D front.

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set on rereleasing the "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Although 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas purportedly was waiting until there were enough screens available to make the release a sizable event.

Fox, which released all six original "Star Wars" films, also would release the 3D versions.

Episode I, "The Phantom Menace," would be first out of star-dock during early 2012. After that, each film would be released in order at the same time in consecutive years, depending on how well the first rerelease does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas overseeing the process to make sure each is as perfect as possible. He has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" is ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Starting with "Phantom Menace," Lucasfilm would use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project. By late winter or early spring in 2012, the exhibition industry should have all the 3D screens anyone could want for such a release.
WHYYYYY!

Interesting Quote: James Cameron

You've got to remember: I worked on Piranha 2 for a few days and got fired off of it; I don't put it on my official filmography. So there's no sort of fond connection for me whatsoever. In fact, I would go even farther and say that... I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but that is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip. And that's not what's happening now with 3-D. It is a renaissance-right now the biggest and the best films are being made in 3-D. Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3-D. Disney's biggest film of the year-Tron: Legacy-is coming out in 3-D. So it's a whole new ballgame.

It's interesting to hear him hate on Piranha 3D. Avatar is the biggest gimmick there is.

The Ring 3D... Really?

Oh Lord, hand me a two piece and biscuit. Greed is shi**ing on horror again.

They are trying to make The Ring 3D... Fu**ing 3D!
Combining two of Hollywood's consuming passions -- sequels and 3D -- Paramount is moving ahead with a new installment of the horror thriller franchise "The Ring."

The third entry based on the Japanese horror movies is being called "Ring 3D." David Loucka, who wrote the now-shooting thriller "Dream House" for Morgan Creek, has been tapped to pen the script.

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are in negotiations to return as producers, and Vertigo and Benderspink are executive producing.

The new film is being fashioned as more teen-centric than the first, and though the logline is being kept under wraps, the aim is to reinvent the franchise. One potential scenario involves teens finding a VHS player that still works.

Hera, help me! Or better yet, Samara, come out the well and end this.

Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard of Oz?

Interesting rumor...
What would you think of Robert Downey Jr. as the wizard of Oz?

Word around town, according to the Los Angeles Times, is that he's talking to producers about the role in the new prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz film.

The wizard, who in the L. Frank Baum books was a charlatan in Kansas before arriving in Oz, is a darker, more complex character than the doddering wizard of the MGM musical.

Could he do it? Will it be fun? I don't know, but I will give a shot.

Who Asked for This?: XXX 3

I know ideas are tough in Hollyhood, but XXX 3? Child Cheese.

See here:
A third installment of the extreme sports action film XXX is revving up again, with some real twists and turns. The project has left Columbia Pictures, with negotiations underway for Paramount to take over the franchise, finance production and distribute the film in late 2011 or early 2012.

Rob Cohen has returned as director, and reunites with Vin Diesel, with whom he made the original. The new installment of
XXX will be shot with 3D cameras.
Haven't this story been played out already? And in 3D? Another played out event.

I like Vin Diesel, but at this point in the game and in his career, I expect better from him.
XXX is not a movie everybody's looking forward to. How about something new and fresh. Vin is an decent actor, I would love to see him do something mind blowing.

And shirtless, of course.

Green Lantern will be in 3D

3D is taking over the world, especially in the comic book movie universe.

Warner Bros. announced that Green Lantern will be filmed in 3 ASS D:
Warner Bros. is adding two more projects to its growing portfolio of 3D films -- "The Green Lantern" and Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch."

"Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Martin Campbell, is heading into production in Louisiana with a June, 17, 2011, release date. "Sucker Punch," starring Emily Browning as a teen confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, has completed principal photography and is set for a March 25, 2011, launch.

I'm not a huge fan of 3D, I feel that it's a cheap ploy to save bad scripts. But, I'll wait and see if this will be worth it.
