First and foremost, Kevin and I really wanted a long engagement to sort our relationship into "marriage mode," and give us time to really figure out how we wanted to go about getting married, even if it wouldn't be legal in California at the time. When Kevin and I got engaged in 2011 and started planning this event, we were very undecided about the theme, and decided to look into our mutual hobbies and interests for inspiration. Both of us are self-proclaimed geeks, and we decided that we would work that into the theme. We couldn't cover all aspects of our interests, so we narrowed it down to one mutual love between us: Batman.This is sooo cool!. Congrats guys!
The Story: Set in two separate universes, the main character Dorian Rhodes has been taking anti-psychotics ever since Incident Zero when he was 13 years old. In the first universe, which is represented in photography, he goes off of medication and moves to California to start a new life on his own. In the second universe, Dorian goes through withdrawal to discover he is part of a small percentage of the population, along with his two best friends, who have mutant powers.
I like the concept. It's something new and fresh.
It's not a story about superpowers, as it is a story about the state of humanity today and how to exist in the current world.
I set out to tell a modern story, and set it apart by featuring characters who act like all people do. They do things out of self-interest, they have sex, they fall in love, they try and find who they are through experiencing what we all do.
This will be different because it features real living people in the first universe. It shows people acting as people which will give this graphic novel a new dimension.
This sounds amazing, naughty, but fun to see. I wonder if there will a similar event at Comic Con this year?This is Skin Tight U.S.A., the occasional costume-fetish party held at the Stonewall Inn in the West Village, which draws a regular group of men (and their admirers) who enjoy a special kind of dress-up. Some wear heroic outfits; some, wrestling gear. The crowd can range from 25 people on an average night to 250 on a spectacular one. The common thread is that the muscle-cuddling garb often leaves little to the imagination.
“I was always attracted to the superhero physique,” said Matthew Levine, 31, who helped found the party in 2005 with Andrew Owen, 44, and who was one of the few participants willing to be named. The two become friends as, respectively, the graphic designer and Webmaster for Hard Comixxx, a predecessor of Skin Tight, once held at the Eagle bar in Chelsea. Mr. Levine is a big fan of the X-Men (who have a handful of gay characters) and the Transformers (all of whom seem straight) and has been reading comics since he was 8. “As I got older,” he said, “I realized, ‘Oh, this is why I admire the Grecian ideal of manhood and musculature.’ ”
“Growing up in the ’80s, I guess I didn’t even think gay super-heroes or supporting characters were a possibility,” Dan Avery, 37, an editor of Next, a guide to gay night life in New York City, wrote in an e-mail message. “I do remember feeling like I had two secrets I had to keep: being gay and being a comic-book fan. I’m not sure which I was more afraid of people discovering.” These days, Mr. Avery is a member of a group of gay men who meet regularly to discuss the latest comics.
