Sarah's Family Values

It just keeps getting better and better. The best VP pick ever, Sarah Palin's 17 year-old daughter, Bristol, is not only pregnant but not married. (NOW BRING ON THE BABY'S MAMA JOKES)

McCain knew about it, but didn't care or think.

"Senator McCain knew this and felt in no way did it disqualify her from being vice president," said the aide. "Families have difficulties sometimes, and lucky for her she has a supportive family."

Bristol, is about five months along, in her second trimester.

And here's the kicker

The aide said it was decided the campaign would reveal this information now because of rampant Internet rumors that Sarah Palin's 4-month-old baby, who has Down syndrome, was actually Bristol's.

Got to love that Republican stance on morals and family values. Now, I not knocking on single mothers, I was raised in a single parent home. However, it does dent their values and message.

'Daddies' actually means something else is our community

As times change and society's slowly opening up, more gay men are coming out and finally settling down. The clubs and nightlife are giving in to commitment ceremonies and house hunting. But what's changing the tide?

The ability to marry, maybe?

More gay men are seeing the possibilities more than before. We can marry in Cali-Cal and Mass, out-of-state folks are being recognized, and same sex benefits are increasing. It's like there's hope and future for our well being. Gail Taylor, who's president and founder of Growing Generations said,

"For future generations, knowing they can fall in love, get married, have a child -- absolutely, that will become a way of life more than it is."

And that leads into our men becoming fathers.

Having a family is no longer a myth, it can be done. Gay men can plan for future that may not been ideal years ago. Sure, we could do this without getting married or civil unions, but I think the changes have revived our spirit and self-esteem. We are seeing that love is possible, a real life is possible. Being a father for some gay men is the ultimate "Ha-Ha" to people who didn't believe that we could do this. It's also reality to us as well.

In my life, I have seen the evolution of our people from Lamar on The Revenge of the Nerds, to Pedro Zamora on the 2nd Real World, to seeing Ellen come out and get married. We have come a long way and hopefully there's more for us as we move gaily forward.

Absent Black Fathers, listen up

Obama's journey has already started, but his agenda for Black men begins here. In the Apostolic Church of God today, Obama called on absent Black fathers to step up. In fact it was more of a challenge.

I think it's good for a man of his stature to address this issue. At times, I often wondered where our big voice would come from. I do understand that in our communities there plenty of voices calling out to our men. I also think it falls on deaf ears. Still single mothers are growing in alarming rates and more of our men are placed in jail or just don't care.

It's hard to think about, and to see on a regular basis. Living in South Central L.A., I'm always reminded of the family crisis in Black and Mexican communities. Then, all of us are reminded of the mess when Maury Povich showcase his favorite subject of, Who is the Father?
I wish there were some answers or ways to end this, but there's no clear path. So many circumstances play such a powerful part in all of this.

But maybe, this is a start. To see one of the most powerful men of color talking about this can possibly get our men to think twice about their actions. And maybe, they can be more than a Baby's Daddy.
