17-year-old Andii Viveros became prom queen at her school, McFatter Technical High School. But why is this special, because Andii is transgender. However, it wasn't an easy road to the crown.
Andrew said some McFatter teens pleaded with school management not to allow her to run for queen. “Many students have started a petition to have me removed from the ballot,” Andrew wrote last week in a Facebook message. “They also are outraged and say I am making a mockery of prom, because I am going in an evening gown.”
Last year, school officials suggested Andrew not dress as a female in class and to “tone it down,” she said.
“This year we got a new principal and she’s very supportive of me,” Andrew said, even encouraging her to run for prom queen. “She said “Stay in the running. Don’t back down for anything.’”
McFatter seniors who voted Friday night also chose a prom king: Juan Macias, a 17-year-old gay male senior. Before the big night, Andrew’s father, Oscar Viveros, bought her a gown, shoes and makeup. “My parents support me. They always have,” said Andrew, the oldest of four siblings.
“I’ve always loved him unconditionally,” said Oscar Viveros, who still uses male pronouns when talking about Andrew. “I’ve told my other kids, they have to support him. He thinks he’s a girl in a man’s body. In school, he hears this and that, but I’ve made sure in our house he’s free to act and do whatever makes him comfortable.”
High School seniors and best friends, Charlie Ferrusi and Timmy Howard made history by winning Prom King and Queen. The Register-Star reports:
“It’s a really big step for Hudson but also for the gay community in general,” Howard said Wednesday. “
To have this happen in our city is pretty exciting.”Ferrusi said he and Howard started thinking about running about a month ago. While there were some students who were in opposition to their idea many more approved and the boys decided to go for it.
By prom night the overwhelming majority of students cast their votes in the open ballot race. They won by such a wide margin the school didn’t crown any runners up.
The students also had the support of the school. The principal made it clear, he would not interfere in the process. The only hard part for the boys was deciding who would be King or Queen.
“First of all it’s Hudson High School,” said Ferrusi. “For me to win king was crazy. For Timmy to win queen was insane. We both researched it online and never found any story of two gay guys winning both king and queen.”
Great news for Derrick Martin! After being kicked out of his home and heckled from his school, he actually had a great time at the prom.
When Martin, 18, and his boyfriend Richard Goodman, also 18, stepped onto a makeshift “red carpet” and their names were announced, a few parents whispered but many in the crowd gave him a loud cheer. No one yelled out in protest.
“I wonder if they realize what they’ve done,” said Arturro Beeche, a San Francisco professor who flew into Georgia on Friday and drove Martin and Goodman to the prom. “Once it happens in small-town America, it will inspire so many,” he said.
I'm glad this was a night to remember for Derrick Martin.
Constance McMillen can't catch a break up in here. Her special prom turned out to be a ruse. The real/other prom was happening elsewhere.
McMillen tells The Advocate that a parent-organized prom happened behind her back — she and her date were sent to a Friday night event at a country club in Fulton, Miss., that attracted only five other students. Her school principal and teachers served as chaperones, but clearly there wasn't much to keep an eye on.
"They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them," McMillen says. "The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to."
Last week McMillen asked one of the students organizing the prom for details about the event, and was directed to the country club. "It hurts my feelings," McMillen says.
Two students with learning difficulties were among the seven people at the country club event, McMillen recalls. "They had the time of their lives," McMillen says. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."
How dare they do this to her? They ruined her prom experience! Joe My God has pics from the other prom. I still can't believe this really happened! However, if this my world, I would go all "Carrie" on them... Minus the killing of course.
With all of this gay prom talk, I can't help but to think about the past.
I wished, I could've went with my true heart's desire.
The guy I was crushing hard for, went with another friend of mine. I secretly hated it, but I wanted him to have a fun prom.
Although we had a great time dancing and taking pictures, I couldn't help but to think about him. I wanted to have the last dance with him, holding him in front of everyone in the room. But I believed it could never happen. At the time, I thought 2 guys going to prom would NEVER be an option. It just seemed impossible or something in classroom daydreams.
Funny, I believed in superheroes and magical powers, but could not see the possibility of 2 guys going to prom together.
But if I had the chance, I would've risked everything to go to prom with my crush. Who wouldn't? I mean, it would've been so cool if my crush came to pick me up from my home, gave me flowers, took prom pictures and later tried to get some in the back seat.
Derrick Martin and his boyfriend are going to their prom in Georgia. The school and the Derrick were celebrated in the media like crazy for this event.
Then the drama set in... Derrick's parents kicked him out because of the hype!
He's staying with a friend for now. However the upside to this news is how the LGBT community is support to him. Folks are offering to pay for everything, making sure Derrick and his boyfriend have a good time.
I hope he stays strong and his parents wake the frak up. This is their child and they should ashamed of their petty actions.
A setback for Constance McMillen. The judge won't force Itawamba Agricultural High School to have their prom.
U.S. District Court Judge Glen Davidson wrote that Constance McMillen, 18, had not met the legal burden for a preliminary injunction, but he said the case remains on his docket for trial.
Both sides pled their case in court Monday, with McMillen’s legal team accusing the district of violating her constitutional right to free expression. School district attorneys countered that the board was attempting to restore order to the school by withdrawing sponsorship of the event.
McMillen has asked the judge to declare the board’s actions unconstitutional and award her $1 in damages plus court costs. No trial date has been set.
Prom was such a big deal back in the day. I went to 3, one of them as a Sophomore thanks to a friend of mine who was a Senior.
But in my Junior year, I had an odd night. After prom was done, a friend of mine who lived in the middle of the woods couldn't go. He was lonely and I was madly in love with him, so I decided to go over his house.
Well, I got lost in the woods on this dirt road and ended up in a ditch. I had to walk two miles to the nearest house just to call a tow truck. Now this was in '92, so cell phones was not as big as they are today. However, walking in the dark in the middle of nowhere was crazy/exciting. Luckily, I wasn't chopped up into pieces or eaten by hillbillies.
But these folks here wasn't so lucky.
