At Chapel Hill: Three Muslim Students were Gunned Down
This story is so heartbreaking.
Last night, three Muslim-American students were gunned down by a disgruntled man. The students were Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. Deah was a dental student at UNC-Chapel Hill, and Yusor and Razan attended NC State.
The man who gunned them down is 46-year-old Craig Stephen Hicks.
He turned himself into police not too long after the murders. At this time, we don't know why he did this. Some articles are saying the murders were triggered over a parking issue, but nothing's been confirmed. However, we do know that he lived in the same neighborhood as the victims.
On a side note, Deah was a star student in the dental program. According to Colorlines, Deah was planning to travel to Turkey to be a part of Project Refugee Smiles to provide free dental care to Syrians fleeing civil war.
This is so sad and unfortunate that they lost their lives over nothing.

The New Ms. Marvel is Muslim and from Jersey
New Stuff, comic fans!
The new Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan, 16, Muslim and from Jersey City. Kamala take on the name of Ms. Marvel once she discovers her shape-shifting powers.
NYT has more on the new character:
No exploding planet, death of a relative or irradiated spider led to Kamala’s creation. Her genesis began more mundanely, in a conversation between Sana Amanat and Steve Wacker, two editors at Marvel. “I was telling him some crazy anecdote about my childhood, growing up as a Muslim-American,” Ms. Amanat said. “He found it hilarious.” Ms. Amanat and Mr. Wacker noted the dearth of female superhero series and, even more so, of comics with cultural specificity. This is cool
When they told G. Willow Wilson, an author, comic book writer and convert to Islam, about their idea, she was eager to come on board as the series’ writer. “Any time you do something like this, it is a bit of a risk,” Ms. Wilson said. “You’re trying to bring the audience on board and they are used to seeing something else in the pages of a comic book.”
Kamala, whose family is from Pakistan, has devotedly followed the career of the blond, blue-eyed Carol Danvers, who now goes by Captain Marvel, a name she inherited from a male hero. When Kamala discovers her powers, including the ability to change shape, she takes on the code name Ms. Marvel — what Carol called herself when she began her superhero career.
