World Bank halts Loan to Uganda over Anti-Gay Law

Oh snap! The World Bank put a stop on a $90m loan to Uganda's health system. Not because they're mean, it's all over Uganda's broke ass Anti-gay law.

World Bank spokesman David Theis said:
"We have postponed the project for further review to ensure that the development objectives would not be adversely affected by the enactment of this new law."
The World Bank president Jim Yong Kim chimed in and wrote in an email:
"In the coming months, we will have a broad discussion about discrimination with staff, management, and our board on these issues. Now is the right moment for this conversation."
The US is concerning a similar thing. I am glad the world is watching and start to act on it.

Gay Former NFL Player Roy Simmons has Died

Sad news...

Former offensive lineman for the Giants and the Washington Redskins, Roy Simmons died today. He was one of few and first line of football players to come out after their careers were done.

The cause of his death was related to pneumonia. According to his brother Gary, Roy learned he had HIV in 1997 as well as other health problems.

Roy struggled with an abusive past and a drug addiction, but fought hard to stay sober. In 2006, Roy released a memoir, “Out of Bounds: Coming Out of Sexual Abuse, Addiction and My Life of Lies in the N.F.L. Closet.” If you get the chance, check it out.

I hope Roy finally finds peace. He was 57.

Sir Ian McKellen on the X-Men's appeal to Gays and Ellen Page's Coming Out

Sir Ian McKellen had a lot to say about the X-Men and how it appeals to certain groups. In an interview with Buzzfeed, he said:
“Marvel told me that the demographic for the readership of the comics is young blacks, young jews, and young gays. These are all young people who feel a little bit like mutants, so they sympathise with [the X-Men] and want them to thrive and do well. And all this has come to a happy conclusion hasn’t it, with Ellen Page coming out. That gladdened my heart so much.”

Hate Group President whines about the SB 1062 Veto

President Cathi Herrod of the Hate Group, The Center for Arizona Policy, is so religious hurt by the veto of SB 1062. Cathi and her goons were largely responsible for this bill.

She said:
Today’s veto of SB 1062 marks a sad day for Arizonans who cherish and understand religious liberty.

SB 1062 passed the legislature for one reason only: to guarantee that all Arizonans would be free to live and work according to their faith.

Opponents were desperate to distort this bill rather than debate the merits. Essentially, they succeeded in getting a veto of a bill that does not even exist.

When the force of government compels one to speak or act contrary to their conscience, the government injures not only the dignity of the afflicted, but the dignity of our society as a whole.

SB 1062 made certain that governmental laws cannot force people to violate their faith unless it has a compelling governmental interest–a balancing of interests that has been in federal law since 1993.

The religious beliefs of all Arizonans must be respected and this bill did nothing more than affirm that. It is truly a disappointing day in our state and nation when lies and personal attacks can over shadow the truth.

Rick Perry is Hurt about the Texas Marriage Ban Ruling

Ricky was so hurt about this that he put out an official statement
"Texans spoke loud and clear by overwhelmingly voting to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman in our Constitution, and it is not the role of the federal government to overturn the will of our citizens. The 10th Amendment guarantees Texas voters the freedom to make these decisions, and this is yet another attempt to achieve via the courts what couldn't be achieved at the ballot box. We will continue to fight for the rights of Texans to self-determine the laws of our state."
Hush up, Rick!

Update: Looking gets a Second Season

Some hope for HBO's Looking.

The series hit an all time high last Sunday. Deadline reports that 519,000 viewers tuned in, which is up 54% from the series premiere. The numbers are growing, but not fast enough.

Hopefully, the show can pick up soon. If not, it could be canceled, especially with True Detective blowing up.

BTW, are you watching that show? It's intense!

Poof, the series got a second season. Hopefully, it will get better.

Delta Airlines to Arizona: Don't You Bring SB 1062 up in Here

Delta released a statement about the Hate Bill
"As a global values-based company, Delta Air Lines is proud of the diversity of its customers and employees, and is deeply concerned about proposed measures in several states, including Georgia and Arizona, that would allow businesses to refuse service to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. If passed into law, these proposals would cause significant harm to many people and will result in job losses. They would also violate Delta's core values of mutual respect and dignity shared by our 80,000 employees worldwide and the 165 million customers we serve every year. Delta strongly opposes these measures and we join the business community in urging state officials to reject these proposals."

US Attorney General Eric Holder said the AGs Don't have to Defend Gay Marriage Bans

Eric Holder has dropped another bomb today. In a speech to the National Association of Attorneys General, he said that they don't have defend marriage bans.

Here is some of his speech:

The essential duty to which all of us – as attorneys general – have been sworn: not just to win cases, but to see that justice is done. This is the cause that brings us together in Washington this week – working to confront the threats and seize the opportunities before us. And this is the extraordinary task with which the American people have entrusted the leaders in this room – and the challenge that all justice professionals are called to address: not merely to use our legal system to settle disputes and punish those who have done wrong, but to answer the kinds of fundamental questions – about fairness and equality – that have always determined who we are and who we aspire to be, both as a nation and as a people.

These are the questions that drove President Obama and me to decide, in early 2011, that Justice Department attorneys would no longer defend the constitutionality of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. As I’ve said before, this decision was not taken lightly. Our actions were motivated by the strong belief that all measures that distinguish among people based on their sexual orientation must be subjected to a heightened standard of scrutiny – and, therefore, that this measure was unconstitutional discrimination. Last summer, the Supreme Court issued a historic decision – United States v. Windsor – striking down the federal government’s ban on recognizing gay and lesbian couples who are legally married. This marked a critical step forward, and a resounding victory for equal treatment and equal protection under the law.

More recently – and partly in response to the Windsor decision – a number of state attorneys general, including those in Pennsylvania, Nevada, Virginia – and, just last week, Oregon – have reached similar determinations after applying heightened scrutiny to laws in their states concerning same-sex marriage. Any decisions – at any level – not to defend individual laws must be exceedingly rare. They must be reserved only for exceptional circumstances. And they must never stem merely from policy or political disagreements – hinging instead on firm constitutional grounds. But in general, I believe we must be suspicious of legal classifications based solely on sexual orientation. And we must endeavor – in all of our efforts – to uphold and advance the values that once led our forebears to declare unequivocally that all are created equal and entitled to equal opportunity.
Is America changing? Yes, boo, it is.

These Two are changing things

Georgia wants a 'Right to Discriminate' Bill, too

Georgia is trying to follow in Arizona's footsteps.

Under the radar, the GOP and few Dems introduced House Bill 1023, or "The Preservation of Religious Freedom Act."

HB 1023 would exempts folks and businesses from any government action or legal proceeding that "directly or indirectly constrains, inhibits, curtails, or denies the exercise of religion by any person or that directly or indirectly pressures any person to engage in any action contrary to that person's exercise of religion."

This bill will be highly problematic and a bit confusing:
"(I)ndirectly inhibits ... indirectly pressures" -- that's incredibly broad language, and it opens the door to all kinds of unintended consequences. And it applies "whether or not the exercise is ... a central part or requirement of the person's religious tenets or beliefs." In short, it offers a means to evade almost any law that can plausibly be claimed to offend even a vague religious sensibility.
This is clearly a carton of spoiled milk that will stink up the state!

Ugandan President signs Anti-Gay Bill, White House Responds

Mess!

President Museveni signed the Anti-gay bill into law today, making it legal to imprison the LGBT community for being themselves. This act has already caused a firestorm in other nations who have warned them not to sign in this bill.

As soon as this happened, the White House responded:
Instead of standing on the side of freedom, justice, and equal rights for its people, today, regrettably, Ugandan President Museveni took Uganda a step backward by signing into law legislation criminalizing homosexuality. As President Obama has said, this law is more than an affront and a danger to the gay community in Uganda, it reflects poorly on the country's commitment to protecting the human rights of its people and will undermine public health, including efforts to fight HIV/AIDS. We will continue to urge the Ugandan government to repeal this abhorrent law and to advocate for the protection of the universal human rights of LGBT persons in Uganda and around the world.
This is a horrifying law and very dangerous for our fam in Uganda.

Jason said this about the game:
"I know that I can play in the NBA and it felt good to be out there tonight. Conditioning-wise, I felt good. I don't think I got tired. It was a lot of fun to get back out on the court and set screens, hard fouls. Didn't take any charges tonight — that'll change. I'll get in position next time. As far as basketball timing, it's going to take at least a couple of practices."

Heroes Return to NBC

NBC's Heroes is returning for a limited run in 2015, called Heroes Reborn.

The series will run for 13 episodes, with a few webisodes to introduce the characters

Here's the press release:
An iconic series that still commands a rabid fan base, "Heroes" will return to the network in 2015 as an event miniseries with original creator and executive producer Tim Kring at the helm, it was announced today by NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke.

NBC has ordered 13 episodes for a new stand-alone story arc entitled "Heroes Reborn," with all details of storylines and characters being kept under wraps.

"The enormous impact 'Heroes' had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening," said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke. "Shows with that kind of resonance don't come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We're thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept. Until we get closer to air in 2015, the show will be appropriately shrouded in secrecy, but we won't rule out the possibility of some of the show's original cast members popping back in."

The original series chronicled the life-changing stories of a series of unrelated ordinary people who discovered they had superhuman abilities. As the saga unfolded, they learned they were part of a grand plan that brought them together to change the world.

With the return of "Heroes Reborn," NBC will launch a digital series prior to the 2015 premiere that will introduce the characters and new storylines. This leveraging of social media is a way for fans to re-engage with what was one for the true pioneers in multiplatform storytelling.

Bob Costas on 'Vladimir Putin’s Games’

The Sochi games have gone much better than many feared and predicted. So far security has held fast, venues have been praised, athletes and spectators have almost unanimously cited the warmth and hospitality of their hosts. All of which is truly wonderful but should not serve to obscure a larger and more lasting truth.

While in many significant ways, Russian citizens have better lives than Soviet citizens of a generation ago, there’s is still a government which imprisons dissidents, is hostile to gay rights, sponsors and supports a vicious regime in Syria - and that’s just a partial list.

The Sochi games are Vladimir Putin's games, from their inception to their conclusion, and all points in between. And if they are successful on their own terms, as appears to be the case, then at least in some corners it will help to burnish the image of a regime with which much of the world takes significant issue. No amount of Olympic glory can mask those realities any more than a biathlon gold medal, though hard-earned and deeply satisfying as it is, can put out the fires in Kiev.

“Well, it’s a very controversial piece of legislation. We know that. We know that it’s failed in a lot of states across the country. ... Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni pauses on Signing the Anti-Gay Bill Again

President Yoweri Museveni has paused on signing the Anti-gay bill in Uganda. Mostly because of President Obama's concerns and others speaking out about the bill.

Museveni wrote in the Ugandan Observer:
After my statement to that effect which was quoted widely around the World, I got reactions from some friends from outside Africa. Statements like: “it is a matter of choice” or “whom they love” which President Obama repeated in his statement would be most furiously rejected by almost the entirety of our people.

It cannot be a matter of choice for a man to behave like a woman or vice-versa. The argument I had pushed was that there could be people who are born like that or “who they are”, according to President Obama’s statement.

I, therefore, encourage the US government to help us by working with our Scientists to study whether, indeed, there are people who are born homosexual. When that is proved, we can review this legislation.

I would be among those who will spearhead that effort. That is why I had refused to sign the Bill until my premise was knocked down by the position of our Scientists.

I would like to discourage the USA government from taking the line that passing this law will “complicate our valued relationship” with the USA as President Obama said. Countries and Societies should relate with each other on the basis of mutual respect and independence in decision making.
Could more outreach eventually change his mind?

Why are Guys scared of the Good Ones?

Not too long ago, a friend met a guy that was relationship material. He was smart, cute, love to read and did I say cute?

Anywho, they went on a few dates and then, he stopped. My friend said he no longer received any 'Good Morning' texts or daily calls. Later, my friend received a text that basically said they couldn't date because my friend has their life together and he can't 'Keep Up' with him.

Hmm, maybe it's just me, but I would want to date someone who was well put together. Why would I want someone who's a mess? After hearing this story, I was reminded of the guys who are intimidated by the good ones... And then I shook my head madly.

Why are guys scared of good ones? I mean, you meet a good guy and then you reject him because he is... good for you? Guys, if you're the ones who are pushing the good ones away, stop it now! Check yourself and ask why are you doing this? I could guess and say it's self-esteem. For many of us, self confidence/esteem is the war we fight for a lifetime.

But take a moment and see what's going on. A good, decent guy wants you and accepts you for who you are. Take a chance, don't run from it.

Don't deny yourself from possible happiness.

I wish I could find a good one, because when I do, I'm going for it.

I can't, I won't let a good one walk away, and you shouldn't either. Get over yourself and get that good stuff!

Remember, you deserve it... You deserve someone good in your life.

Interesting Quote: Mozambique’s former President Joaquim Chissano

“We can no longer afford to discriminate against people on the basis of age, sex, ethnicity, migrant status, sexual orientation and gender identity, or any other basis – we need to unleash the full potential of everyone. As an African who has been around a long time, I understand the resistance to these ideas. But I can also step back and see that the larger course of human history, especially of the past century or so, is one of expanding human rights and freedoms. African leaders should be at the helm of this, and not hold back. Not at this critical moment.”

Arizona House passes Anti-Gay Discrimination Bill

Staying messy, the House voted 33-27 to pass the Right to Discriminate bill.

As I mentioned yesterday, this bill allows folks and businesses to refuse services to LGBT folks or organizations that challenges their religious freedoms. This bill was fostered and pushed by the Christian Center for Arizona Policy and GOP state senator, Steve Yarborough.

Now this bill heads to crazy ass Jan Brewer.

Get it together, Arizona.

Christopher Barron resigns from GOProud

After GOProud accepted the invitation to CPAC, Christopher Barron resigned from the group.

He told Buzzfeed:
“Last night I resigned from the Board of GOProud, the organization that I co-founded back in April of 2009. I cannot in good conscience sit by and watch as the current leadership of the organization disingenuously pawns off an unconditional surrender to the forces of bigotry as some sort of ‘compromise. Nothing has changed in regards to GOProud and CPAC, GOProud does not have a booth, they are not a sponsor, they are not participating in any formal sense – individual members can attend and that’s exactly the terms ACU dictated the previous few years.”
Funny how things have changed.

Secretary Kerry statement on the Anti-LBGT Rhetoric in The Gambia

White House Press Release
STATEMENT BY SECRETARY KERRY

Anti-LBGT Rhetoric in The Gambia

The United States is deeply troubled by the hateful rhetoric used by President Jammeh in his National Day speech on February 18. All people are created equal and should be able to live free from discrimination, and that includes discrimination based on sexual identity and sexual orientation. We call on the Government of The Gambia to protect the human rights of all Gambians, and we encourage the international community to send a clear signal that statements of this nature have no place in the public dialogue and are unacceptable.

Human rights and fundamental freedoms belong to all individuals. The United States stands by you no matter where you are and no matter who you love.
Take that, Jack!

Arizona Senate approves the 'Be a Bigot for Religious Freedoms' bill

Oh, Arizona...

Yesterday, their Senate voted 17-13 to pass SB 1062, a silly bill that gives religious groups the right to be bigots in the name of the Lord. Basically, they will be able to discriminate against LGBT people.

This bill also allows folks and businesses to refuse services to other folks or organizations that challenges their religious freedoms. This bill was fostered and pushed by the Christian Center for Arizona Policy and GOP state senator, Steve Yarborough.

Interesting when you think about it. This man is thinking this bill will protect God, by allowing folks to be assholes to others. So Christian like. Hopefully, this will completely fail, but the nerve of folks like Steve is very interesting.

Meet the New Fantastic Four Cast

These are very interesting choices for the Fantastic Four cast, but it is what it is.

Variety reports that Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan are set in the roles.

Kate Mara is set to play Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman
Jamie Bell Bell as (possibly) Ben Grimm/The Thing
Miles Teller has been offered to play Reid Richards/Mr. Fantastic
Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch

Jada Pinkett Smith cast as a villain in the Batman prequel, 'Gotham'

This is kinda cool.

Jada Pinkett Smith will be a villain in the Batman prequel, 'Gotham'. Her character is a new one, so you can't find her in the comics. Jada will play Fish Mooney.

Here is the character description:
an imposing, hotheaded and notoriously sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner with street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book who is not one to be crossed.
I wish she had a better name, but it's fine. I'm just happy to see her on TV again.

Ted Cruz says the White House is Hostile to Traditional Marriage

Ted Cruz is really trying to find a reason to exist. Since he failed in killing Obamacare, he's going for marriage.

Another fail in waiting.

He's pushing the revamped DOMA bill, which will never get anywhere, but he's still determined. Then, to continue this fool's quest, Ted said that President Barack Obama’s administration was “hostile” to traditional marriage. Hostile? Wow, since when making marriage for all, hostile?

He said:
“But it’s also manifested from the federal government, with the Obama administration. This administration is the most hostile-to-traditional-marriage administration this country has ever seen.”
Lord, stop trying to be seen, Cruz. Folks saw what you had to offer and not many are buying it.

Interesting Quote: Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh

"We will fight these vermins called homosexuals or gays the same way we are fighting malaria-causing mosquitoes, if not more aggressively. We will therefore not accept any friendship, aid or any other gesture that is conditional on accepting homosexuals or LGBT as they are now baptised by the powers that promote them. As far as I am concerned, LGBT can only stand for Leprosy, Gonorrhoea, Bacteria and Tuberculosis; all of which are detrimental to human existence."

Survey shows Hope for a Gay Football Player

ESPN.com's NFL Nation and ESPN The Magazine created an anonymous survey to see how a gay football player would fair on a team. The results were interesting and a bit hopeful.

  • 51 players responded to four true-false questions on the survey.
  • The survey revealed that most players wouldn't be torn up about it, but would need training on how to deal with an openly gay teammate.
  • 44 players said a teammate's sexual orientation wouldn't matter to them.
  • 39 players said they would be fine showering around a gay teammate.
  • Not so good part:  32 players said they had teammates or coaches who used homophobic slurs last season.
  • 25 players said that a gay teammate would be comfortable in the locker room, but 21 said no, and 5 of didn't answer.

The team or teams will need some type of training or seminar to get them ready. The league will have to get behind this initiative in order for it to be successful. No half-stepping.
