Wow!
I saw the news on my way to work. Two buildings on 1644 and 1646 Park Avenue, between 116th and 117th streets collapsed, leaving 17 injured and 2 dead.
The explosion is believed to be caused by a gas leak. There will be more news later, but this what I got for now.
My heart goes out to the families and friends of wounded and dead.
More to come.
What most people don't realize is that gas infrastructure beneath the streets in most cities dates back to the turn of the 20th century or a bit earlier.
ReplyDeleteNow in some places - the utilities have been required to replace those ancient cast iron lines because they leak like sieves.
I know a few years back National Grid bitched and moaned because the Public Utilities Commission told them they had to replace the lines. But they did it anyway because the liability of not doing so was counter-profitable for them.
