Evolve Already... This is a hashtag used to tell President Obama to evolve on Gay Marriage.
I would like to know your views on this. Should Obama Evolve Already, Evolve When Ready? What's your take?
Me, I think this is a political process. I feel in my heart he's fine with Gay Marriage, but he's playing the field until the numbers for support increase. But that's me, how about you?
"I feel in my heart he's fine with Gay Marriage, but he's playing the field until the numbers for support to increase"
ReplyDeleteIf this is true, then what you're saying is President Obama is basically lying when he says he doesn't support marriage equality. This would also means that he's willing to play politics with an issue that is of vital importance to us.
If this is true, then SHAME on him. We deserve better than that.
If Dick Cheney can come around on this issue, then President Obama certainly can.
I can see that, David. I'm hoping with his evolution, he is aware of the consequences. I feel like it's more political if anything. But if I'm wrong, I will totally own it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. He has already done more then we could have hoped for and I think he just has a time line in his head and it includes ending DOMA.
ReplyDeleteShame on him? For what? For playing politics with something he knows full well will happen eventually with or without his approval? What he needs to focus on is getting reelected, and he will LOSE more votes than he will GAIN if he becomes a vocal supporter of gay marriage.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if Liberals and Democrats weren't so apathetic, and actually voted like they said they would, he could publicly embrace all the ideals he would like to.
People are dying on the street because they can't see a doctor and 19 year old boys are being blown up in war. I can forgive this president for not risking his political career on a gay community who can't realize he's done the most specifically for us any other ever has.
@emikegarcia: I disagree. The people who so adamantly disapprove of marriage equality (conservative, white, southern cousin-fuckers) will NEVER vote for President Obama anyway. The people willing to change their vote over this one issue have already made up their minds. These are the same asstards who think the man is a Kenyan!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I'm sorry but I don't buy "we are at war/healthcare is sucky/things are shitty all over" as an excuse for discrimination. And that's what this is - plain and simple. Make no mistake - not supporting marriage equality = supporting INequality.
Yes, President Obama has done more than any other President blah blah blah. But he should be leading on this issue - not playing politics and hiding behind some states rights/I'm evolving bullshit.
I agree with most of what you are saying David, but I wasn't talking about conservative asshats who aren't going to vote for him anyhow.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about the black grandmothers who love him to death but will stay the hell at home during the election because he supports gay marriage. I'm talking about the Mexican families who think he's wonderful for immigrants but will never vote for someone who disagrees with their priests.
I'm not talking about he people who would never vote for him, I'm talking about the people who will stay home because they feel, as you do, that he needs to fully come out and put his political aspirations, as well as those of the rest of us because let's face it, we can be all he hasn't done enough blah blah blah, but what do you want? Michelle fucking Bachman? Because that's who we'll get if we try and force President Obama to alienate half his base, the communities of color who absolutely DO NOT support gay marriage, at least not yet.
I agree that it's political. Why should he make the 2012 campaign season any more difficult for himself than necessary? Making pro-marriage statements would make the right-wingers go berzerk, and that's probably all we'd hear about from then on out.
ReplyDeleteIf the gay community keeps this up we'll have MissHell Bachmann for President. Of course the President is playing politics. LET HIM DO IT. So he can get reelected.
ReplyDeleteI think there's a timeline and it's likely after the 2012 elections. When he's in a second term, it's safe for him to pass laws that.
ReplyDeleteThere was nothing at stake when Dick Cheney came out for marriage equality this year. It never would have happened while he was running the country.
Evolve Already...
ReplyDeleteHe is the President of ALL Americans not just the ones that scream the loudest and harshest.
So the entire LGBT community is supposed to STFU and accept second class status so one man can get re-elected? Really??? And what happens after 2012 when there is some other excuse not to support marriage euality("We must elect Democrats in 2016 - now isn't a good time")??
ReplyDeleteAs Damien said - Barack Obama is the President of ALL Americans. We should be treated no differently that those black grandmothers and/or those Mexican families Mike mentioned. President Obama should be LEADING on the issue and changing the minds of those hesitant grandmothers and families, if that's what needs to happen. This is what a leader does (Gov. Cuomo, anyone?).
And if you're going to use "Whatdya gonna do - vote for Michelle Bachmann?" as an argument, why can't those grandmothers and families Mike spoke of be asked the same question?? Are African Americans really going to vote for a crazy Republican Bitch-From-Hell?? Are Mexican Americans (or any Latino voters) going to embrace the GOP after all the hostility it has shown to them?? NO. Not in large numbers anyway.
So why is it that the LGBT members of the Democratic coalition are the only ones told to sit down, shut up, and be happy with what you've got??
EVOLVE ALREADY.
Most of your statements come off as naive and childish so I'm not even going to address them, David.
ReplyDeleteWhat I will address, however, is how you keep missing my point. The reason democrat special interest groups have to accept certain levels of support is because democrat and liberal voters are apathetic. Unless he swims in the shallow end and does what he can to cater to ALL (conservative fucks not included), he won't be reelected.
The families I mentioned will not vote for a Republican instead, they just won't come out. That is the biggest problem the Democratic party has in this country. The fact that they can't put the fear of God into their voters.
You can grandstand all you want about how he isn't fully inclusive, but that doesn't change how he won't be reelected if he was. Unfortunately, the number of democrats who won't even bother voting far outnumber the hardcore liberals he doesn't already have if he comes out supporting same-sex marriage.
@emaikegarcia: I've never considered standing up for my rights as being "naive and childish". If you are ok with Second Class status and believe we shouldn't offend those fragile "black grandmothers" and "Mexican families" by insisting that OUR President represent OUR interests (as well as theirs) - then that's on you.
ReplyDeleteBut I was raised to believe that everyone should be treated equally and fairly all the time - not just when it's politically expedient (yep - it's just me being naive and childish again).
You go ahead and keep patiently asking those nice politicians to give you some equality (as long as it doesn't offend anyone) - and we'll see how far that gets you. I'm sure it will happen ... right after the next election.
Talk about being naive and childish...
Still missing my point, buddy. But I haven't the energy to try and break it down even more basic. You keep screaming, though. It works with senators and governors whose only responsibility is to their smaller constituencies.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you include a patronizing "buddy" in there #keepitclassy
ReplyDeleteDid you even read the comments you posted, Mr I'm-a-Better-Gay-Than-You?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, nice tweets calling everyone who disagrees with you "self-hating."
