Civil Unions proposal clears first hurdle in Colorado

Colorado's Senate Judiciary Committee advanced the Colorado Civil Union Act yesterday. The hearing was about 4 hours, but after everyone spoke the message was clear.
The first vote came late Wednesday afternoon — and it came as no surprise to anyone — when the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 3-to-2 on party lines to send Senate Bill 11 on to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Bringing down the gavel on the vote was Sen. Jessie Ulibarri, D-Adams County, elected in November, who had sat on the other side of the room the past two years and testified twice about how the bill’s legal protections would help support his partner and their son.

“It’s a very different year, a very exciting year,” Ulibarri told FOX31 Denver prior to the hearing. “We have folks here who are willing to stand up for committed couples and there will be a very different result this year.”

Ever so slowly, the times are changing.

The pace seems to be quickening though. I think it has to do with the fact that none other than President Obama and Vice President Biden decided to finally come out and support full equality in concerns of marriage.

And the civil unions thing, that's just a short hop and a jump to full marriage.

Here in RI they changed the H-5015 to H-5015-A to include verbiage that converts all our civil unions to full marriage should the bill pass.

I'm pretty sure it will pass the House, the Senate is the the black box but even there there are only 38 members and it's easy to lean on them.
