What Roger said,although he left out location. Almost every gay-themed show I've seen has taken placed in L.A, New York or some other major metropolitan area. Setting a show about gay folks in the south or Midwest or just some middle of nowhere town would give a fresh take on things.
But also I think just having more gay-themed shows period would help. As four decade of black-themed TV has taught us, no matter how critically acclaimed or funny a show is (Good Times, Sanford and Son, The Cosby Show, Martin, the list goes on) there's always going to be a segment of black folks who cry foul. I think the same applies to shows with gay characters.
If we have enough shows where gay characters are treated like any other one (i.e. their lives/humanity are explored beyond their sexuality) then there would be something for everyone so to speak.

The networks won't do it. It'll have to be on HBO or Showtime and not just for X-rated content/language. For it's reality.
