Obama will Holla at the HRC before the National Equality March

President Obama is doing the damn thing.

He will be addressing the HRC during their annual dinner on the night before the Equality March.

While it remains to be seen what Mr. Obama’s appearance at the dinner will do to his standing in the eyes of gay rights activists, his speech may mollify some of their concerns.

His appearance will mark only the second time a sitting president has spoken to the Human Rights Campaign. The first time was in 1997 when Bill Clinton spoke to the group. That was the first time a sitting president had ever addressed a gay rights organization.

A person with knowledge of Mr. Obama’s plans confirmed his appearance at the dinner. But this person spoke on the condition of anonymity because a formal announcement is expected later today.

The White House had no comment. A spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Mr. Obama’s speech will coincide with the National Equality March, which is taking place on Sunday and is expected to draw thousands of gay rights supporters to the National Mall.

I think it is good he's speaking that night. I know there will be haters and whiners, however, this is the 2nd president to ever address this group. He is making an effort and I am happy for that.

  1. I am on board with you on that. It is fantastic he is speaking, and the timing should not be mistaken. Some of the whiners and moaners should take note, and while not changing their minds, at least remain quiet for a bit.

  2. Consider the march passed right by the White House. Hopefully he'll deign to make an appearance.

  3. I'm happy he will be able to speak at the dinner. I think it is a good gesture toward our community. He's a bit busy now, in case some people haven't noticed, so anyone who is unhappy with his slow pace on GLBT issues needs to cut him a little slack.

  4. Yes, Kyle...very busy. He'll be golfing this weekend. Apparently he can't multi-task? Is that what you are saying. I mean. He could fly overseas to pitch the Olympics, but he doesn't have times for GLBT issues. GLBT issues that have a greater financial impact on the nation and long term outcomes that will last far longer than any sporting event that could have taken place in Chicago. The Dems will lose the Senate next year, possibly the House as well. Any slack we cut Obama right now is just going to be used to hang us later.

  5. Mike, he was not solely there to push for the Olympics.

He has time for LGBT issues, I think it is unfair to say that he doesn't. he been working on LGBT issues for a while and honestly, I don't want him multi-tasking my rights. That's a bit off to believe.
