Protesters interrupt Marco Rubio's Speech at the Hispanic Leadership Network Conference

DREAMers (folks who support the Dream Act) interrupted Rubio's speech at the Hispanic Leadership Network yesterday.

In the lead-up to Rubio's speech, critics from a group called Presente Action had a propeller plane circling the Doral Golf Resort & Spa with a banner reading, Hey Marco: No Somos Rubios, which translates to "We aren't Rubios." It's a play on words on the word rubio, which in Spanish means blond or fair. The group is attacking Rubio largely over immigration, protesting that the senator doesn't support the pro-immigrant DREAM Act.

After saying a few words in Spanish, Rubio, who was greeted by a standing ovation, said he got a text message froma friend telling him about the airplane banner. "Marco, we're not blond," he said, translating the banner. "Which, by coincidence, neither am I -- although if I'm in the Senate for another year, I may start being a little bit more gray."

The crowd laughed. Then Rubio immediately went into the issue of immigration -- and a couple of suit-clad protesters stood up, raised signs that said "Marco Rubio -- Latino or Tea-Partino" and asked Rubio why he isn't helping them. "You're an immigrant yourself!" they yelled.

Rubio appeared unfazed. Security approached the protesters while Rubio said, "I ask that you guys let them stay, because I think that they're going to be interested in what I'm going to say." Rubio got a standing ovation. "I don't want them to leave," he repeated. "I want them to stay."

"Let them stay!" chanted the crowd.

But the protesters were escorted out.

Rubio's is rumored to be on the VP short list. However, he is not completely loved by the Latino community.

The multi-talented Darryl Stephens (from "Noah's Arc") and producer Larry Kennar are bring us a new series. It's called, "DTLA," known as DownTown Los Angeles. It's covers lives of seven friends living basically two miles from me. Here's is some more info.

DTLA is a self-financed, gay scripted drama series, best described as a cross between "Queer As Folk" and "Swingers." Six 30 minute episodes have been produced, and we are seeking funds to complete post-production and a few pick-ups on the series in order to deliver it to OutTV for an April 2012 premiere.

DTLA depicts the relationships of seven friends with varied ethnic, cultural, and sexual orientations who work and live in the vibrant community of Downtown Los Angeles. It's a story of love, friendship, loyalty, and being true to oneself - no matter what the cost. It is the first dramatic series with gay leads since "Queer as Folk," "Noah's Arc," and "The L Word."

Our eyes into this world are Lenny (Darryl Stephens of "Noah's Arc") and Bryan (newcomer Matthew Stephen Herrick), a long term couple who can no longer escape some fundamental truths about their relationship. As they begin to deal with end of their relationship - their lives, and the lives of their friends will be forever altered.

This is the one year anniversary of the human rights activist David Kato's death. David was a fierce fighter for gay rights in Uganda and worked tirelessly to bring about change to the people.

Since then, Katherine Fairfaz and Malika Zouhali-Worrall created a documentary focusing on David's life and work. It is called, "Call Me Kuchu".

Arizona Governor and mess queen Jan Brewer wasn't that excited about President Obama's arrival in Arizona. In fact, she has some words for him.

Brewer and Obama "spoke intensely for a few minutes" after he landed at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, according to a White House pool report. At one point, the GOP governor shook her finger at the president.

"He was a little disturbed about my book," Brewer told a reporter after the incident, referring to her political memoir, "Scorpions for Breakfast." In the book, Brewer depicted Obama as "patronizing" during an earlier meeting.

"I said to him that I have all the respect in the world for the office of the president," Brewer said. "The book is what the book is. I asked him if he read the book. He said he read the excerpt. So."

Brewer said Obama told her "that he didn't feel I had treated him cordially."

"I said I was sorry he felt that way but I didn't get my sentence finished," Brewer said. "Anyway, we're glad he's here. I'll regroup."

She knows she is wrong for her actions and Obama called her ass on it. I think Miss Jan better get ready for a battle.

In Minnesota: Parents Demand School to provide Ex-Gay Therapy

A slew of conservative Christian parents — and even an orthodox rabbi — implored the Anoka-Hennepin School District to purge schools of any mention of homosexuality and demanded that teachers teach about the “ex-homosexual” movement and “gay-related immune deficiency.” One district member even assailed Dan Savage’s It Gets Better campaign as vulgar and accused the popular columnist of teaching children about “three-ways.” Several people testified using little more than versus from the Bible that are often used to demean and degrade the LGBT community.

The controversy in the district is over the sexual orientation curriculum policy also called the “neutrality policy” which says that LGBT issues are not to be discussed in the district’s schools. Six students are suing to eliminate the policy on the grounds that it makes for a hostile school environment and the district announced last month that they are considering scrapping the policy and replacing it with one that deals with “controversial topics” but doesn’t single out LGBT students and issues.

My Rant: LGBT issues in the State of the Union Address

As I look out in LGBT blog world, I noticed some sour faces over the President's State of the Union address. Some are very upset that he said "gay" once and spoke nothing about LGBT issues.

But I beg to differ, I believe he did speak about our issues. The economy is our issue, being in the 99% is our issue, having a home is our issue and finding/keeping a job is our issue. We should not forget those issues hurt us too. I know folks were hoping to hear about marriage, but let's be real; marriage is not the overall deal. In fact, the majority of our (LGBT) community don't see marriage as a top priority. Job security has become the major issue. Now, more than ever people are trying to stay afloat in this country. Sure marriage equality would be great, but the need for financial and economical stability trumps all. Also, a recent study backs this notion, providing reasons why many in the LGBT community don't place marriage so high.

And just because the President didn't mention marriage equality, doesn't mean he's against it. I think it's ridiculous to read that he doesn't care or he flip-flopped. His actions has been in step with his promises, he's on our side.

Please remember, he spoke to the nation. Not just Blacks, Asians and Gays... The nation. The issues he spoke about are our issues. We need to stop looking drama and start envisioning hope.

The female-skewing network is moving forward with its reimagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world where a beautiful and tough princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast.

Human Target scribe Jonathan E. Steinberg (Jericho) will pen the project with Gary Fleder (Life Unexpected) and Mary Beth Basile (October Road) attached to executive produce the ABC Studios project through their Mojo Films shingle.

Gov Chris Christie called today for a voter referendum on the fall ballot over the issue of legalizing gay marriage.

If successful, the referendum would change the state Constitution. He urged Republicans in the Legislature to put the matter to voters. But if a bill made it to his desk, Christie said he would veto it.

Christie doesn't want officials to decided on marriage equality, he wants the people to decide. However, he will veto the bill if it comes to him. If the people want this, why would he deny the community? I don't get this, Chris Christie!

Lord, the tea party is a hot ass mess. The other day, these fools presented their demands to Tennessee lawmakers. Among those demands was the ability to change history and remove slavery from the textbooks.

The material calls for lawmakers to amend state laws governing school curriculums, and for textbook selection criteria to say that “No portrayal of minority experience in the history which actually occurred shall obscure the experience or contributions of the Founding Fathers, or the majority of citizens, including those who reached positions of leadership.”

Fayette County attorney Hal Rounds, the group’s lead spokesman during the news conference, said the group wants to address “an awful lot of made-up criticism about, for instance, the founders intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another.

Made-up criticism? Are these people crazy or what? Slavery was real, especially in the Tennessee area. They have to high or daft to think they can erase slavery from the history books.

In Maryland: Gov. O'Malley introduces Gay Marriage Bill

Gov. O'Malley promised to support gay marriage and he's keeping that promise. He introduced the gay marriage bill last night.

The governor, his staff and advocates worked throughout the day to hammer out language detailing religious protections. They distributed the new legislative language moments before the 8 p.m. session began.

In an informal briefing with reporters earlier Monday, O'Malley said his bill would make religious protections "a little clearer" than they had been in last year's version of the measure. He said he hoped the changes would lead to "additional support."

The language provided Monday night made a few key changes, according to Raquel Guillory, a spokeswoman for O'Malley. She said the bill extended legal protections to leaders of religious groups, while last year's bill shielded only institutions.

The bill also makes clear that religious leaders, not the state, control theological doctrine, Guillory said. And it further limits any punitive actions — like denying government funds — that the state could take against religious organizations for failing to perform same-sex marriages.

O'Malley has invited LGBT supporters and religious leaders to finalize plans and to work out the details in the morning. This is getting good for us!

Washington has the 25 votes for marriage equality, thanks to Senator Mary Margaret Haugen!

Haugen's announcement came has hundreds of people filled the capitol to advocate for and against gay marriage. State senators began considering the bill during a morning committee hearing.

In a statement, Haugen said, "I know this announcement makes me the so-called 25th vote, the vote that ensures passage. That's neither here nor there. If I were the first or the seventh or the 28th vote, my position would not be any different. I happen to be the 25th because I insisted on taking this much time to hear from my constituents and to sort it out for myself, to reconcile my religious beliefs with my beliefs as an American, as a legislator, and as a wife and mother who cannot deny to others the joys and benefits I enjoy."

They only needed 25 to pass the bill forward from the Senate! We are getting there!

Black and Gay Mayor Nominated for New Jersey State Supreme Court

Gov. Chris Christie has nominated Bruce A. Harris to serve on the State Supreme Court. But why is this news? Well, Bruce is openly gay, Black and possibly, the third Black person to serve on the State Supreme Court. Plus to add sprinkles to this deal, Bruce will be the first openly LGBT person on board.

I have to say this is a huge deal, in the midst of the gay marriage debate coming in New Jersey. I guess Chris is trying to secure his governorship for the next term. Anywho, I wish Bruce luck on this historic nomination and I hope his Repub background don't cloud his judgment. (Thanks, David for the update)

Opponents came out swinging this week, too. The Stand for Marriage Coalition on Friday announced longtime gay marriage opponent Ken Hutcherson as its spokesman. He had harsh words for Gov. Christine Gregoire, who is leading the charge this year for the legislation.

“She might as well change her name to John Wilkes Booth,” said Hutcherson, “because what she’s doing now is trying to put a bullet in the head of one of the greatest traditions that has ever existed and has built our society -- and that is marriage between one man and one woman.”

My Review: We Need To Talk About Kevin

I just saw 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' the other night. This movie is amazing! It pushed so many buttons and I welcomed every one of these sensations.

Here is some insight about this movie: It follows Eva, a mother who's dealing with her son's (Kevin) murder spree in their little town. Eva always saw the signs of Kevin's darkness, but never knew it will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Here's my vague review:

The films takes through the different times of Eva's life. She was a free spirit before she settled down and got married.
Tilda Swinton was superb. As Eva, you could feel her pain and see her struggle with being a mother. She is a true actress.
The themes in the films are perfect. Guilt, Love, Sadness, Regret.
Watching Kevin's darkness as a kid was captivating. Especially, in the 'ball rolling' scene.
The movie trimmed a lot from the book, but it was still a solid story.
They kept flashing scenes from Kevin's court case. I wish they had more scenes with that .
Watching Eva restart her life after Kevin's murder spree was gut wrenching.
Ezra Miller is so gooood as Kevin. His look and voice was perfectly dark. This was a great casting.
When he revealed why he murdered his classmates, I though it was a great way to sum up his character.
The music choices were odd, but it fit the film.

In Tennessee: A Gay teen took his life because of Bullying

Another teen took his life because of bullying. Phillip Parker killed himself because no one tried to stop students from picking on him. He was only 14-years old.

WBIR reports:

More than 100 people gathered in Gordonsville on Saturday night, grieving the loss of Phillip.
"He was fun, he was energetic, he was happy," said Gena Parker, Phillip's mother.

To his many friends, Phillip was known as the boy who told everyone they're beautiful.

"He kept telling me he had a rock on his chest," said Ruby Harris, Phillip's grandmother. "He just wanted to take the rock off where he could breathe."

Phillip's family said they reported their concerns over their son's bullying to Gordonsville High School on multiple occasions, but the bullying by a group of students just got worse.

"I believe my whole family up in heaven's taking good care of him," said friend Megan Redinger.

This happened in Tennessee, the state that believes students should not say Gay. It is also the place that may allow students to bully others in the name of the Lord. The officials in Tennessee need to see how this foolish and hateful measure hurts the kids.

Hopefully, Phillip's death will make them think about the truly protecting the youth.

Here are the Exit Polls in South Carolina:

Sixty-four percent said the debates were an important factor for them; just 34 percent said they were not. Gingrich won standing ovations in both debates while Romney often struggled - and at one point received a smattering of boos for equivocating over how many years of his tax returns he would release.

Gingrich, who polls suggest overtook Romney in the final days before today's primary, is hoping for a victory that would keep Romney from locking up the nomination before the end of the month. A majority of voters - 53 percent - said they made up their mind about who to back within the last few days.

The exit poll data showed that South Carolina voters overwhelmingly cited the economy as the most important issue, with 61 percent citing it. (The economy was the top issue in Iowa and New Hampshire as well.)

It was followed by the federal budget deficit (23 percent), abortion (8 percent) and health care (4 percent).

Seventy-eight percent of voters in South Carolina, where the unemployment rate is 9.9 percent, said they are "very" worried about the nation's economy.

Honestly, judging by the exit polls Newt will fail in achieving these things.

"We have had three different victors in state contests thus far — Rick Santorum in Iowa, Mitt Romney in New Hampshire and now Newt Gingrich in South Carolina. What all these states have in common is that they have picked candidates who have signed NOM's Marriage Pledge. They are all winners and NOM supports each of them."

Gingrich, Santorum and Romney have each signed NOM's Marriage Pledge, which commits signatories, if elected, to taking specific steps toward preserving the institution of marriage as the union between one man and one woman. Rep. Ron Paul is the only remaining Republican presidential candidate not to have signed the pledge, and he is not considered to have any realistic chance of becoming the Republican nominee.

"It is now clear that the Republican Party will nominate a candidate who is strongly committed to preserving marriage as the union of one man and one woman," Brown said. "We have succeeded in making the preservation of marriage a key issue in this race, and we will continue to do so throughout the primary season, and into the general election against President Obama."

This is hypocritical and against everything NOM stands for. We should note this moment as the day NOM forgot who they are.

However, due to cost and special effects reasons, the furthest they ever got was a brief photo shoot which you can see below.

To my Family,

This is the first Christmas letter that I have ever written. I feel like since I am getting older, I should start writing a letter to the family or just talk about how I thought the family's year has gone until Christmas.

Ever since I ended up in this family people have told me that I was lucky. I have always known that I am lucky, especially when I have two dads that love me so much as Dad and Dadio. My family is very special to me. Even when we fight and even when we argue, I know they will always love me. Yes I am a lucky boy to have ended up here after spending so many years in foster care and not knowing if I would ever have a family.

I didn't grow with a dad. My birthmom had many boyfriends and she did a lot of drugs and partying. My sisters and me were taken from her on my eighth birthday. It was not fun to have police in my room on that day. It made me sad and this sadness I carried for many years and it got me in a lot of trouble. Then I landed in a great foster home after having lived in 12 different homes in three years. It was when I lived there that both my foster mom and social worker told me there was a family that wanted me. There was a catch: it was two dads!

Honestly, it didn't matter to me. I told them, "well, I never had a dad, now I get to have two!"

The start was tough and rough, and I put them through hell and back. I did awful and nasty things to them both. I stole their credit card and spent thousands of dollars online. When we went on my first vacation out of the country, I stole stuff from a souvenir stand - they found out and made me go back to the shop to return the souvenirs and made me pay the lady who owned the shop for the stolen property which then I had to give to a local kid. I didn't get it and thought they were being mean.

When I stole their American Express and maxed it buying stuff online I was only 12 years old. They were very upset, but Dad made sure I got the message of how serious this was. He took me to our local police station and reported me to the police captain for having stolen again. I was taken to an interrogation room and talked to by three police officers. All the time there I only wanted my Dad to come in and bring me home. I wanted to turn time back to before my stealing so I would not be there and I would not have hurt my parents so much. I learned my lesson and NEVER stole again!

But Dad and Dadio brought not just me into this family. They also added my brother Derrick. What I can say about Derrick is that he is really cool, he is funny, he is an awesome gay guy, he is a one of a kind guy, he is my bro. Next they added Nick. Nick can get on my nerves sometimes, but in the end he is pretty cool. He is a fast leaner when it comes to math and multiplying numbers. And with that said, I will go to the roots of the family.

Dad and Dadio. They are my parents and they are always here when I need them.

When it is dark they are the light,
When I feel frightened and chill's,
They are the warmth I feel.
When I am hungry they cook my meals.

I did not put a lot of time into the poem, but in the poem you see my parents. The people that show me the light. The people that warm my heart when it gets dark. The people that cook my meals. If I could only ask for anything for Christmas I would only ask for my family.

Arrow tells the story of a wealthy playboy who acts as a hooded superhero at night, fighting crime with his enhanced arrows. According to THR, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) are producing alongside Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe). The official pilot order comes just one week after news broke that Arrow landed at The CW.

Carrie Diaries is based on the book of the same name by Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell; the first book in the series was published last year. Told from Carrie’s point of view, the narrative follows “the aspiring writer through her relationship with Sebastian Kydd and rivalry with popular girl Donna LaDonna.” Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Len Goldstein (Hart of Dixie) are producing. Former Sex and the City writer/producer Amy B. Harris will be the showrunner.

The CW’s new take on Beauty in the Beast is described as “a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist.” Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper (Brothers and Sisters) are attached as the head writers, to produce alongside Paul Witt, C. Anthony Thomas, Ron Koslow, and Bill Haber.

The Carrie Diaries will be a tough one. Do we want to see Carrie, before she was NYC Carrie? The Beauty and the Beast reboot? It could work, if it was on cable. And Arrow? Nope, it want work, I know it.

Black Pastors support Hate Groups' Protest of the Southern Poverty Law Center

Several Black pastors joined Hate Kings, Peter LaBarbera and Matt Barber to protest SPLC for labeling faux Christians organizations hate groups.

About a dozen African-American pastors joined anti-gay extremists on Tuesday in condemning the SPLC for using its “hate group” label to describe faith-based organizations that are against the LGBT lifestyle. At a press conference staged outside of the SPLC offices in Montgomery, Alabama, the pastors spoke and stood in solidarity with organizations, including Americans for the Truth about Homosexuality (AFTAH), an organization the SPLC lists as an anti-gay hate group.

“The SPLC has moved from monitoring actual hate groups like the KKK and neo-Nazis to slandering mainstream Christian organizations with that very same hate group label,” said Matt Barber of the Liberty Counsel. “By extension, the SPLC is smearing billions of Christians and Jews worldwide as haters simply because they embrace the traditional Judeo-Christian ethics.”

In response to the accusations that the SPLC is wrongly labeling organizations as “anti-gay hate groups,” Mark Potok, editor of the SPLC ’s Intelligence Report, says they’re labeled as such because that’s what they are.

“Our listing of anti-gay hate groups is completely unrelated to religion, Christianity or the Bible,” Potok said. “These groups are listed because they repeatedly lie in an effort to defame LGBT people, an exercise they’ve been extraordinarily successful at. The idea that we are criticizing these groups because they represent Judeo-Christian morality is simply ludicrous.”

Please, these groups are ludicrous! They spend countless hours spreading lies and mess about the LGBT community. Instead of strengthen economy or education, they rather cruise Folsom or M.A.L. with donors' money. They wish they were doing God's work. And these Black pastors are so messed up for supporting them.

Key Findings from GLSEN's Study of Bias, Bullying and Homophobia in Grades K-6

GLSEN has a new study called "Playground and Prejudice: Elementary School Climate in the United States" which looked at bullying and homophobia in elementary schools. The study used 1,065 elementary school students in the third to sixth grades and 1,099 elementary school teachers of kindergarten through the sixth grade.

Here are some sad and interesting key findings:

About 75 percent of all elementary school students report that students at their school are called names, made fun of or bullied with at least some regularity.
Fifty-one percent of students say that fellow students at their school make comments such as "retard" or "spaz" sometimes, often or all the time, while about half of students (45 percent) report that they hear comments like "that's so gay" or "you're so gay" from other kids sometimes, often or all the time.
One quarter of students (26 percent) and teachers (26 percent) report hearing other students make comments like "fag" or "lesbo" at least sometimes. Meanwhile, one in four students (26 percent) and 1 in 5 teachers (21 percent) hear students say bad or mean things about people because of their race or ethnic background at least sometimes.
Slightly more than half (59 percent) of elementary school students say they feel very safe at school.
Four in ten students (39 percent) say they hear other kids at their school say there are things that boys should not do or should not wear because they are boys at least sometimes. One third of students (33 percent) say they hear other kids at their school say there are things that girls should not do or should not wear because they are girls at least sometimes.
Students who are bullied at least sometimes are three times as likely as others to say they often feel stressed (15 percent vs. 4 percent).
Interestingly, 37 percent attributed the bullying to the fact that they weren't good at sports, compared with 26 percent who said their aptitude with schoolwork was the reason.

The Drudge Report leaked this info early and everyone picked up on it.

Here's is the scoop from HuffPo:

ABC staffers were caught by surprise at the news, telling The Huffington Post that if there was a "civil war," they hadn't heard about it. That doesn't mean there wasn't any debate among ABC executives over when to air the interview, but simply that the war certainly wasn't raging through the newsroom.
It also looks like the interview will air before Saturday's South Carolina primary after all. One ABC insider said that the Gingrich interview, conducted with Brian Ross, will likely air on Thursday's "Nightline."

Marianne Gingrich, the former Speaker's second wife, of 18 years, hasn't been shy about her feelings toward her ex-husband's presidential ambitions, telling Esquire in 2010 that there's "no way."

"He could have been president," she said. "But when you try and change your history too much, and try and recolor it because you don't like the way it was or you want it to be different to prove something new ... you lose touch with who you really are. You lose your way."
"He believes that what he says in public and how he lives don't have to be connected," Gingrich added, in the Esquire interview. "If you believe that, then yeah, you can run for president."

In the Esquire interview, Marianne also dismisses the conversion to Catholicism during his current, and third, marriage. She said it "has no meaning."

Instead, look for Bill and Eric to team up while the vampire world begins to both expand and collapse in the coming season. "The guys have usually tried to kill each other and now suddenly have to learn to become friends and protect each other and work together."

Debate on H.R. 3261, as it's formally known, has consisted of one hearing on November 16th and a "mark-up period" on December 15th, which was designed to make the bill more agreeable to both parties. Its counterpart in the Senate is the Protect IP Act (S. 968). Also known by its cuter-but-still-deadly name: PIPA. There will likely be a vote on PIPA next Wednesday; SOPA discussions had been placed on hold but will resume in February of this year.

The beating heart of SOPA is the ability of intellectual property owners (read: movie studios and record labels) to effectively pull the plug on foreign sites against whom they have a copyright claim. If Warner Bros., for example, says that a site in Italy is torrenting a copy of The Dark Knight, the studio could demand that Google remove that site from its search results, that PayPal no longer accept payments to or from that site, that ad services pull all ads and finances from it, and—most dangerously—that the site's ISP prevent people from even going there.

Perhaps the most galling thing about SOPA in its original construction is that it let IP owners take these actions without a single court appearance or judicial sign-off. All it required was a single letter claiming a "good faith belief" that the target site has infringed on its content. Once Google or PayPal or whoever received the quarantine notice, they would have five days to either abide or to challenge the claim in court. Rights holders still have the power to request that kind of blockade, but in the most recent version of the bill the five day window has softened, and companies now would need the court's permission.

The language in SOPA implies that it's aimed squarely at foreign offenders; that's why it focuses on cutting off sources of funding and traffic (generally US-based) rather than directly attacking a targeted site (which is outside of US legal jurisdiction) directly. But that's just part of it.

In Tennessee: The 'Don't Say Gay' Bill Returns

Continuing the foolishness against the LGBT community, Tennessee's GOP will present the 'Don't Say Gay' bill to the General Assembly's Education Subcommittee tomorrow.

This will be very interesting to see where this will go. The bill also could include the loophole to allow religious folks the right to hate. This bill has drew a huge amount of attention from LGBT activists and civil rights group. So, it's going to be something to talk about for the rest of the week.

Out of all MLK's kids, Bernice is well known for being the anti-gay one. She has never been a staunch supporter like her mother. However, Bernice shocked the crowd by giving a LGBT affirming speech yesterday.

In a passionate, sermon-like speech about building unity, King said she didn't care if people were Hindu, Buddhist, Islamist, were from the North side or the South side, were black or white, were “heterosexual or homosexual, or gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender” — that all people were needed to create unity.

LGBT people who attended the rally said they were shocked that King – who has a long anti-gay past — actually acknowledged the community in a public speech, but said they were also glad because it shows people can evolve.

Rev. Maressa Pendermon, a minister with LGBT-inclusive Unity Fellowship Church, said she at first intended to tune out King because of her anti-gay past, but decided to pay attention one more time.

For her father's vision to be realized we've got to come together across boundaries and then she got in preacher mode. Then she said ‘heterosexual or homosexual,’ and then backed up and said ‘lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.’ We need all of us,” Pendermon said. There's always room for growth,” Pendermon said, describing her reaction to King's words. “People grow and people change. Sometimes we don't let them. I wasn't expecting that. And I was already ready to shut down but I challenged myself to listen and I'm glad I listened.”

I wonder what changed for her? Did Bernice finally understand the true message of her parent's work?

It is with this same sense of urgency that King would summon the LGBT community to act if he were alive today. He would question whether HBCUs are equipped to serve LGBT students who are victims of anti-gay harassment or domestic violence. He would rally young people and administrators to take action before we lose another black life.

Noting that we are inextricably linked through our common humanity and our fight for equality, King stated, "Eventually the civil rights movement will have contributed infinitely more to the nation than the eradication of racial injustice. It will have enlarged the concept of brotherhood to a vision of total interrelatedness."

NBJC is calling on both the civil rights and LGBT communities because King's words continue to ring true as we propel this movement forward. We must remind ourselves, like King did, why we cannot wait, why the time to have these conversations and the time to act is now.

Sad news in Florida. According to Public Policy Polling, endorsements from Rubio, Tebow and Scoot are important for any of the GOP candidates:

When it comes to endorsements in Florida Rubio>Bush>Tebow>Scott. 40% would be more likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by Rubio compared to 30% for Bush, 16% for Tebow, and 12% for Scott. It says a lot about Rubio's rising stardom that his nod already carries more weight with Florida Republicans than Bush's. Meanwhile it's just another sign of Scott's unpopularity that only 12% of GOP voters would consider his endorsement a positive, while 41% would be less inclined to support a candidate 'graced' with it.

And speaking of Tebow...

if Tim Tebow's flamed out of the NFL by 2014 he may have good job prospects in Florida. His favorability with Republicans there is 73/6 and he trails Rick Scott only 47-26 in a hypothetical primary contest...not a bad place to start for a 24 year old football player.

In Utah, you can get a comic book degree.

Students at Broadview Entertainment Arts University will soon be able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in comic and sequential art.

“This program is built for people who are passionate about telling stories that often begin as paper-napkin doodles, move to freehand sketches and finish with creative products that connect emotionally with audiences,” said BEAU’s dean of programs Mitch Hare.

The new degree in comic and sequential art prepares the artistic person to create such products as comic books, graphic novels, cartoons, storyboards and animated feature films.

Where was this degree in 1992?
